Covid Testing Continues each Tuesday
Dear CCUSD staff and families:
We are ready to go with the new COVID testing provider - Living Fit Nation (LFN). Testing will begin next week for all staff and students, with the first week (similar to the last rollout) acting as our pilot to make sure everything runs smoothly. We will monitor the registration status to ensure everyone is registering and contacting those who do not.
To be tested this Tuesday (11/9), you must be registered by Saturday 11/6 at 8:00pm.
Registration for this system is similar to the last one with several improvements:
- One parent email is able to register multiple students
- Once registered, you are set - no need to “order tests”
- Assistance is available directly from LFN
- Step by step instructions are attached here to assist you
You will have to provide insurance information if available, as billing is done the same way. LFN will bill insurance if available and if not will bill the Federal grant program, which is why they need further information if you select “no insurance”. You will never be charged anything for these tests.
With this new provider, we will be able to do all the testing in one day. The schedule for now will be Tuesdays:
- All elementary schools and OCD first thing in the morning until 10:00am
For more information, please go to the district website: 2020-2021 Updates & Communications - ES: COVID-19 / Distance Learning - Culver City Unified School District (ccusd.org)

Updates around Campus
Incident Reporting
As you can imagine, your children are quite active throughout each school day. Children move within and between classrooms, participate in PE and recess, stand in lines, gather supplies, play games with (or without) recess equipment, and so on. Teachers are supervising this activity while also providing instruction, helping children cope with big feelings, managing behavior, and providing conflict resolution. During any of these activities, students may physically bump into others or into objects, get knocked down, trip over something, or in some other way end up with a bump or scrape.
The protocol for staff at La Ballona is for teachers and/or the Health Office to notify families of incidents that involve intent to harm, head injury, or a significant visible injury. In many cases this will be a judgement call, as to what "intent" or "significant" means in context. Please remember your child's teacher is a trained, concerned professional doing their best. They are not infallible (since they are human), but they are caring advocates for your children. Their judgement is informed by years of experience with hundreds of children, and I have confidence they are making good choices about what to report the overwhelming majority of the time.
This year is uniquely difficult regarding student bumps and scrapes, because our Health Office's capacity has been greatly impacted by our Covid protocols. Nurse Maria is required to investigate each staff/student illness absence. We average over 30 student or staff illnesses per day. This by necessity limits our ability to give above-and-beyond attention to small incidents that do not rise to the level of our reporting protocol (above). Please know that we are all trying our best in one of the hardest years of our careers. Most of the time, we get it right. There will be times when we miss something. This is never intentional, but a result of the overwhelming amount of tasks each staff member is handling any given moment. I ask that you please assume goodwill and professionalism on the part of your student's teacher. And I ask for your patience as we handle the very much ongoing fallout of a global pandemic.
From the Attendance Clerk
Dear La Ballona Parents,
My name is Rosy Reyes and I’m the Senior Office Assistant here at La Ballona. One of my main responsibilities is attendance. If your student is ever absent please email rosyreyes@ccusd.org with the reasoning for the absence and the number of days that your student will miss. If you have a Doctor/Dental/Court or any other legal form of an excused absence, please include attachment in the email.
If your student is late, please come in to the front office to sign them in. If the student is late due to a Doctor, Dental, Court etc. appointment, please bring the note from the corresponding office verifying the appointment. Please feel free to email any digital note to rosyreyes@ccusd.org .
If you are picking up your student early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. This will allow us to save time with having your student ready for you. Be sure to arrive to school with spare time, sometime students are out on Lunch/Recess and it is hard to locate their exact location. If your student is leaving early due to an appointment, please make sure to ask for a letter confirming of such appointment and bring excused note the following school day. You can also email the note to rosyreyes@ccusd.org
If you have any attendance question please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
With love,
Rosy Reyes

Annual Fundraising Drive
Hi Parents, With a goal of raising $150K (approx $300/child) for this year's programs and supplies, we're in need of community support. Every donation pushes us closer to our goal; allowing us to create a platform for our students to access educational opportunities, tools and experiences the school might not otherwise be able to afford.
Ways to donate and help out:
- Go to bit.ly/laballona and donate what you can!
- By check, make payable to "La Ballona PTA" and return in an envelope to your classroom teacher.
- Share this flyer with your friends, family, and local businesses!
