Board Corner
The next regular meeting of the Board is December 11, 2023 at 6:00 PM and will be held at Wilmington High School in the library. With the November and December meetings so close together, we'll provide a combined Board meeting summary in our January 2024 District Newsletter.
In other Board news... We want to take this time to express our gratitude to departing Board members Michael Flanigan and Kevin Snarr. Michael Flanigan served on our Board of Education for 8 years and Kevin Snarr for 15 years. Their leadership and efforts on behalf of our students have been greatly appreciated.
Two newly elected Board members, Bill Davis and Bill Liermann, will be sworn in at the Board's organizational meeting in January. The date for the organizational meeting will be set by the Board at their December meeting. The 2025 Board Meeting schedule will be set at the organizational meeting and posted on our website.
Real Money, Real World!
In November, the junior class at WHS participated in a Real Money Real World Simulation. Students completed financial literacy lessons during Government class throughout the week and took that knowledge to a simulation event from the Ohio State University Extension.
Students were randomly assigned a career and a family size prior to the simulation. They made the calculation to adjust their gross income to their net income and then were assigned to visit 12 real world booths and budget their monthly income.
The booths were Housing, Child Care, Clothing, Food, Entertainment, Insurance, Transportation, Health & Wellness, Chance , Communication, Contribution, and Credit/College Loans.
Students shared the following reactions/realizations after the simulation:
- "How expensive phone and Internet is and how expensive health insurance is."
- "I'm going to start saving more money."
- "Things cost alot more than what I expected"
- "Pay for most important things first"
- "How much a lot of stuff is and how quickly it can be spent"
- "Being careful with prices"
- "How much babysitting costs"
- "How I spend my money on things I want but don't need"
- "It's easy to get into debt"
This simulation is typically done at the Middle School, however our current juniors had missed out due to COVID. It was decided to offer them the opportunity this year at the High School. A special thank you to Mr. Cooper and Mr. Oney for preparing the students for the event!

Did you know...?
Lottery Revenue Isn't Itemized
Did you know that when schools receive funds from the State, there is no line item that specifically designates how much of that money was from lottery sales? That's because the State accounts for the lottery profit as just one part of their entire Education budget. Once all the State's income sources (Ohio income & sales tax, lottery, etc.) are estimated and the Education budget is set, they use the Fair Funding Formula to generate a unique amount of State funding for each public school district in Ohio. This process is done once every 2 years.
There is alot of misconeption out there about lottery money and school funding. If you would like to learn more, check out the WKYC news article from January 2023 linked below.
