Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools
State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.
Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.
Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.
Review and Update Emergency Information
If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.
All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.
We look forward to partnering with you to make 2021-22 a safe, fun and productive school year for all of our students and families.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD
Boys Hockey Saturday, Jan. 8 @ Rosemount
The Lightning Boys Hockey team battled Rosemount to a tough 2-0 loss on Saturday afternoon in a game marred by 75 minutes in penalties between the two teams.
From the drop of the puck the game was pretty even with little offensive room for either team until Rosemount was assessed a major penalty for checking from behind about five minutes in. Unfortunately the Lightning were unable to capitalize on the five minute power play. The best save may have actually been short-handed by Lightning goalie Jay Svaren when Rosemount was able to get behind the defense. The Lightning were later penalized for a five minute major toward the end of the period, followed by a questionable tripping penalty just as the horn sounded. For the period, the Irish had an eight to five advantage in shots.
Rosemount came out hard during the ensuing five on three advantage putting several shots on net but Lightning goalie Svaren was strong. After failing to covert on another power play, the Lightning were called for a second five minute major for contact to the head but yet again, Svaren was up to the task. In fact, the Lightning seemed to gain a little momentum as Walker Bergland became a one-man wrecking crew during the penalty kill. Bergland set up Gabe Tritschler for a nice opportunity before getting by the Rosemount defense for a second opportunity on his own partial breakaway. In addition to Bergland’s effort, the penalty kill of Cody Domagalski, Jordan Larkee, John Kisch and the defensive corps of Tritschler, Logan Opgrand, Ben Keefer, Nick Karam and Sam Gillis were strong. A Rosemount penalty negated the final few minutes of the major and Svaren closed out a very difficult period with 16 saves, while the Lightning were defending their net they were limited to five shots on goal.
The third started much the same as the Lightning were assessed two penalties in the first five minutes and unable to sustain the strong penalty kill as Rosemount scored twice, the first of which popped over Svaren’s shoulder on a flukey deflection. The Lightning finally generated several nice opportunities during a power play in the last minute and half but were unable to score. A very physical game came to an end with a series of offsetting penalties. The Lightning will have another opportunity against Rosemount on home ice without the rivals band that filled half of the visiting section.
The Lightning next take on White Bear Lake in a non-conference game at the Apple Valley Ice Arena on Tuesday at 7pm, before two conferences clashes against Lakeville North and Apple Valley on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Go Lightning!
1/6: The Eastview Boys Varsity Hockey moved their record to 8-2 on the season by completing a 5-3 road win over the Minnetonka Skippers on Thursday night. After a scoreless 1st period, the Lightning fell behind 2-0 early in the 2nd period on a couple quick powerplay goals by the Skippers. Jordan Brothers got Eastview on the board with just 15 seconds left in the period on a nice shot from the point. The powerplay goal was assisted by Tanner Kronberg and John Kisch. Shots were 19-11 in favor of Tonka after two periods.
In the 3rd period, Eastview got rolling with two powerplay goals just five seconds apart. The first was scored by Jordan Larkee, assisted by Gabe Tritschler and Kisch. The second was score by Zach Wooten assisted by Kisch and Larkee. Then less than four minutes later, Eastview scored two even strength goals just 18 seconds apart. Wooten notched his second of the game from Kisch and Larkee and then Kisch scored from Logan Opgrand and Nick Karam. Eastview had some very nice defensive plays in the game including a nice poke check by Ben Keefer on a Minnetonka forward driving to the net and a fantastic breakaway stop by goalie Jay Svaren in the 3rd period.
1/8/2022: Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Rosemount High School 6-2
The district, conference, and section rivalry between Eastview and Rosemount is always intense. In the first showdown this year, the teams battled to overtime where the Irish escaped AVSA with a 2-1 win. Coming into Saturday’s clash, RHS was 13-1 and ranked #5 in the State. Eastview, however, is not afraid of the spotlight and bested the Irish 6-2 to start the second half of the conference schedule.
The Lightning earned a power play just after the half-way point of the opening period and they made it count. Senior Assistant Captain Dani Farrington moved the puck from the point to the wing where senior Captain Nora Stepan launched a rocket at the Irish net. The goalie saved the shot, but the rebound came right back to Stepan and she buried it to make the score 1-0 at 6:24. With under a minute to go in the first, Stepan hit sophomore Erin Hayward breaking out of the zone and Hayward fed junior Jessica Wilhelm as the two moved into the Irish end. Wilhelm patiently held the puck until the last moment and fed a perfect pass back to Hayward for the tap in goal and a 2-0 lead. At the end of one, the shots on goal were 9-6.
The Lightning capitalized on the power play two times in the second. First, at 2:48, junior Meghan Keating and senior Betsy Bjerke moved the puck to sophomore Hailie Holman who found the 5-hole to make the score 3-0. At 14:12, Stepan sent a saucer pass from behind the Irish end line across the front of the Irish goal to senior Captain Avery Chesek who pounded the puck to the net. Hayward picked up the rebound for her second score of the night. At 14:57, Hayward tallied her third point of the game when she found Chesek at center ice and Chesek did the rest, carrying it into the Rosemount zone and beating the Irish goalie after a sweet move past the defense. The score was 5-0 after 2 and the shots were 16-17.
Rosemount scored twice in the third, but Wilhelm found the back of an empty net to make the final 6-2. Senior Assistant Captain Angie Lombardi made several tough saves during the third and notched her 6th win of the season. The final shots on goal were 21-35. The win moved Eastview to 6-6-1 and 6-4 in the conference. Next up: Wednesday, January 12, at Dodge County. Game time is 7:30. If you can’t make it to the game, watch it live on EVGH Facebook. Let’s Go!! Go Lightning!! #OurTime

JV SPORTS
1/4/2022 Eastview Boys JV Hockey Team Kicks Off the New Year With a Victory
The Eastview boys JV hockey team started their new year off with a victory over Shakopee on January 4th. The Lightning got into penalty trouble early in the first but were successful in killing their first two penalties. Unfortunately, they were scored on with 6:19 left in the first on a 5 on 3 when two Eastview players were in the box. The Shakopee Sabers landed a shot to the upper corner during the 5 on 3 power play and ended the first period with a 1 to 0 lead. Shakopee had 5 shots on goal in the first; the Lightning had 7.
After successfully killing another penalty in the second, Eastview forward Billy Downs stuffed it in the net to tie the game 1 -1. Downs was assisted by both of his defenders with Brayden Kaldenbach and Kevin Woehler notching the assists. The Lightning finished the second period in a 1 - 1 tie but continued to out-shoot Shakopee; Eastview ended the period with 16 shots on goal to Shakopee’s 9.
With less than 10 minutes left in the third, Eastview’s Jaymeson Zackery tipped it in on a shot from the point by defender Graham Ellingson. The goal marked a three game scoring streak for Jaymeson and put the Lightning ahead 2 to 1 in a lead that they never relinquished. Eastview outshot Shakopee 27 to 13 and goalie Blake Jensen helped secure the win with a strong glove in net.
1/8/2022 Eastview Boys JV Hockey Team Battles Rosemount
Fueled by an awesome pasta dinner hosted by the Goff family, the Eastview boys JV hockey team traveled to Rosemount on Saturday to face the Irish. It was a fast-paced game, and the Lightning came out strong and hungry for a victory. Eastview was the first on the scoreboard with 5:33 left in the first period when defender Brayden Kaldenbach skated it end to end, deked out the D, and picked the upper corner to put Eastview in the lead. Owen Iikubo was credited with the assist. With three minutes left in the first, Rosemount tied it up with a quick snipe to the upper corner. At the end of the period, the score was tied 1-1 with the Irish outshooting the Lightning 12 to 8.
Eastview got into penalty trouble in the second with 4 penalties called against the Lightning (including one for too many men on the ice) and none against Rosemount. During a rare 5 on 5 during the second, Eastview forward Ethan Hansen broke the tie with a strong shot out front. Hansen was assisted by his line mates Louis Rogers and Michael Cherevatsky. The Lightning ended the period with a 2 to 1 lead, but Eastview finished the period with only 13 shots on goal compared to Rosemount’s 29.
Eastview goalie Blake Jensen kept the Lightning in the game with several outstanding saves throughout the game. With less than 4 minutes left in the third period, Eastview went to the box again. The Lightning were able to kill the penalty and ended regulation time with a 2 – 2 tie. A six minute sudden death overtime did not produce a winner, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Hats off to goalie Blake Jensen who notched a total of 48 saves for the Lightning and congratulations to the Lightning on staying strong against Rosemount and putting 21 shots on goal.
The Lightning have three games this week on home ice beginning with a game against White Bear Lake on Tuesday, January 11 at 5:00 pm at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.
