The J-List
February 16, 2024
Hello JES Family,
What a fun week! We enjoyed seeing so many of our families on campus for our Valentines Parties. Thank you for taking the time to come share the day with us! This is one of my favorite events we have all year.
We have had a huge increase these last few weeks with sickness across the campus. Strep, Flu, stomach issues - all the usual suspects for this time of year! We absolutely appreciate how hard everyone is working to get our kids to school everyday, but I just wanted to take a moment to express the importance of keeping your child home when they are sick. Our 24 hour rule is put into place to keep our kids and staff safe and the hope is to stop the spreading of illnesses as best as we can. I have included information in this newsletter from Nurse Denise about when to keep your student home as opposed to sending to school. Thank you for your help with this!
Finally, I am so excited to share that our students as a campus mastered over 59,000 math facts during our month long Math Fact Fluency Challenge! I am overwhelmed by the growth we have seen! Thank you for your support and efforts in encouraging our students to spend some extra time working on their math facts.
I hope you have a wonderful 3-day weekend! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or celebrations you would like to share with me and...GO DRAGONS!!!!!

Don't forget that Monday, February 19th is a student holiday! Enjoy the three day weekend.

Health Updates from Nurse Denise
Please see the following information to help us try to slow down the spread of the common sicknesses that we are seeing across campus - strep, flu, stomach issues, etc.
Students should be kept home if any vomiting the night before or morning of, hence the 24 hour rule. If fever within 24 hours is an exclusion, please no Tylenol or Advil in the morning and sending to school. If we all work together on this, it will have a big impact of stopping the spread of illnesses. I have put part of the policy below, and it is listed in the health services section on the district website.
Free of Symptoms (Clinic Policy)
It is the goal of Carroll ISD to provide an environment that is conducive to learning for all students and staff. Some communicable diseases or conditions may warrant exclusion from school to avoid exposing other students. If your student exhibits any of the following symptoms, please keep your student home until the child is free of the symptoms and has been satisfactorily treated.
- Temperature of 100 degrees or above
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Persistent cough
- Rash
- Open, itchy or draining lesions
- Red, itchy, draining eyes
- Presence of live lice or nits in the hair
- Suffering from a reportable disease, as defined by the Texas Board of Health
- Undiagnosed scaly patched on the body or scalp
Your child must be 24 hours free of fever without Tylenol or Advil and not throwing-up for 24 hours before they return to school. Antibiotics must be taken for 24 hours before returning to school.
JES Solar Eclipse Event
On April 8th we will be in the path to experience a once in a lifetime total solar eclipse event! This eclipse is special to us because:
- The last time DFW experienced a total eclipse was 1878.
- On April 8, 2024, DFW will experience 4.5 minutes of totality – the longest amount of totality in the country.
- Dallas is the largest metropolitan area in the line of totality.
- After April 8, DFW will not experience a total eclipse for an estimated 300 years.
- The next opportunities for total eclipses in the United States are 2044 (North Dakota and Montana) and 2045 (California to Florida – totality will be in Oklahoma).
JES will be celebrating this event with a Solar Eclipse Watch Party the afternoon of April 8th. Our generous PTO has secured enough eclipse glasses for all of our students and staff. We are still in the planning stages for this event and will provide more details as we get closer to April 8th.
Kids Heart Challenge Update!
Our Kids Heart Challenge is nearing its end, but there's still time to reach our goals! So far we have 334 students who have joined, 31 who have completed Finn's Mission (entering them into the NFL Sweepstakes for Super Bowl 2025 tickets), and have raised over $29,000 in donations.
We have one last week to sign up, donate, get a donation, and complete Finn's Mission. It's a great time to send one final reminder to friends and family who will want to support you. You can still sign up on the American Heart Association Schools app for iPhone or Android, or registering online using this link. Remember that any student who raises $200 in donations will get to attend a COLOR BLAST PARTY with Coach Wilson, Coach Higginbotham, & Mr. Holladay. So far we have 52 students who have earned their ticket!
Stroke is a major cause of death and disability. Acting quickly is critical. Protect your family by learning to spot a stroke as part of Finn’s Mission. Log into your Kids Heart Challenge page and click on the Stroke Quiz then click “share” to send the video.

PTO Playground Improvements!
Thanks to successful fundraising and the generosity of our families, we are able to install 5,600 square feet of turf on the playground as our next project. This will allow our kids to enjoy many more outdoor recess days as opposed to having to stay inside due to mud from rainy days. If weather permits, the kids will be enjoying the new turf on February 20th! Our two shade structures purchased after the Adult Auction and Social are also in the permitting phase with the city and will be installed this spring!
Check out the JES PTO website for events happening in and around our school! You can also subscribe to the Google Calendar, join the PTO Facebook Group, sign up for texts, shop at the Spirit Shop & more! With so many ways to stay connected, you and your family will never miss a thing!
