FEBRUARY
Have no fear, the pack is here!
A Message from our Principal:
Dear Parents,
Welcome to February!
February will be a very busy month, filled with important, purposeful, and fun activities! We will start the month with Coffee and Conversation on Tuesday, February 6th where parents will be allowed to visit classrooms and see the amazing instruction taking place at Weikel. We’ll continue into February with Student Showcases taking place on Tuesday, February 20th, Wednesday, February 21st, and Thursday, February 22nd. Your child’s teacher will contact you to schedule your child’s showcase. We look forward to conversations that will promote future success and support for children at Weikel.
Daily school attendance continues to be a priority at our school. Thank you for your continued support in getting your child/children to school every day and on time. Students who attend regularly learn more and develop habits that will continue throughout their school career. Weikel students who are on time and ready to learn receive carefully planned instruction, active learning experiences, and daily opportunities for participation. We strive to meet or exceed a monthly average of 95% attendance.
Also, just a reminder that breakfast is served daily beginning at 7:05. If your child eats breakfast here at school, please ensure your student/s arrive at 7:05 so that they’ll have plenty of time to eat before the 7:30 tardy bell rings.
Parents, we are looking forward to a great month!
Respectfully,
Dr. Jaramillo- Principal
A Message from our Counselor:
Happy February! This quarter our social-emotional focus area is relationship skills. Students are learning about supportive friendships, resolving conflict, and setting boundaries. The week of February 12-16th, we will also be celebrating World Kindness Week! Students will spend some time thinking about how small acts of kindness can actually make a BIG difference! Did you know that participating in an act of kindness causes the release of serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin? Students will learn about the “science of kindness” and will have many opportunities to practice random acts of kindness throughout the week. If you are interested in participating in World Kindness Week at home, go on over to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website at https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/ . The website has many wonderful ideas for how you can practice random acts of kindness as a family!

- Children who have cold symptoms such as: a constant runny nose, with abnormal color (green, yellow, or white) or thick nasal discharge, constant coughing, or lung congestion should not be in school.
- Children who have been diagnosed with an infection and have been placed on medication should not return to school until they have taken the medication for up to 24 hours after the first dose.

If any of the above signs and symptoms last longer than 48 hours, please contact your child's school nurse before they return to school.
If your child is hospitalized or treated for an infectious disease, please provide your child's school a written statement from the health care provider that your child is no longer contagious and is cleared to return to school.

A Message from our Kindergarten:
Love is in the air for February!
This month in reading and science, we are learning about weather, seasons and stormy weather. Students will continue to write complete sentences using capitals, spaces, and end marks with a detailed picture. In math, students are exploring composition and decomposition in story problems with numbers and shapes. Students will be working hard to get ready for addition and subtraction! Please remember we go outside every day and the weather can change quickly in Colorado. We look forward to seeing our families during Spring Conferences to share all the wonderful things your child is working on in the classroom.
Message From First Grade:
We cannot believe that we are already three weeks into the third quarter of first grade. In reading we will continue with increasing our reading skills by using our decoding skills we are learning in small groups. We will be learning about character, setting, and plot: sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and main ideas and details. We will be focused on writing a 3-5 sentence paragraph throughout the third quarter. In math we will be heading into Module 4. Your child will be learning how to make tens and ones, writing and reading numbers to 120, 10 more and 10 less, and regrouping ones into tens. This month we have some exciting things happening in first grade: the 100th day of school (February 2nd), Groundhogs day, and our Valentine’s day party. We are looking forward to meeting with you all to talk about your child during the student showcases in February. As always, please let your child's teacher know if you have any questions or concerns.

School Closures
Weather and Closing Information
The primary method to notify all district employees, parents, and students of school closing is through our mass notification system in Blackboard. Notifications will be sent via text, email, and phone. The district communications office will also post a pop-up message on the homepage of our website for visitors accessing information here, as well as push a notice through FFC8 Twitter and Facebook.
Inclement Weather Procedures:
The weather in Colorado can vary widely from day to day and through different parts of the Colorado Springs region. FFC8 administration monitors the weather closely in an attempt to ensure safe access to schools for students, parents and staff. Two-Hour Late Starts and/or District Closures will be announced through various methods including: television, radio, the District’s website, and the FFC8 mass notifications via email, text, phone.
If parents believe the conditions are not safe on a day when inclement weather conditions exist and the District is still open, it is always the parents’ option to keep children at home. Parents should follow their school's absence reporting procedures to report weather-related absences.
Weather Decisions for Fort Carson vs. FFC8:
Occasionally, Fort Carson and Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 will make different decisions with regards to weather and operations. If you have questions about whether or not CYS is open, more information can be found on the CYS Family and MWR website.
Moving:
We know PCS season is upon us. If your family is moving, please notify the front office at least 2 weeks in advance and fill out withdrawal papers for your student(s). Please keep in mind that you have 10 days from the time of withdrawal to the time of enrolling into your new school.
