Kasper's Notes
A busy week (aren't they all!?!) and a little rain.
This week students made 3D Playdoh neurons as part of a discussion about growth mindset, wrote about the advantages and disadvantages of cash in our society, went on nature walks and created leaf pictures with their findings, and taught me how to spell KIND in sign language!
I was able to pass out some more Respect stickers to students throughout the week, which of course, makes me very happy!! Keep it up Mayo!
The idea of respect was on full display as our students listened intently to Firefighter Joe from the Holden Fire Department. They learned about ways to protect homes and families as he raised awareness of fire safety.
Three things I learned this week: It is possible for a kindergarten student to come to school without any shoes on, The PTA members have way too much energy as witnessed during the Craft Fair set-up, and there is a beach in Wellfleet, MA named Mayo Beach that I've been to without knowing the name!
Reminder: K-2 does NOT receive first quarter Report Cards (except for Art, Music, and PE). In place of core subject Report Cards, your teacher will be scheduling a conference for the beginning of November to discuss student progress to date.

Literacy Parade This Friday @ 2:00
Please Note: THIS IS NOT A HALLOWEEN PARADE! WE ARE PROMOTING LITERACY AND BOOK CHARACTERS!
Also, MASKS (and weapon-like accessories) ARE NOT ALLOWED FOR THE PARADE AND PLEASE - NO SCARY CHARACTERS THAT MAY UPSET THE YOUNGER STUDENTS! WE WANT EVERYONE TO ENJOY THE AFTERNOON!
The Literacy Parade ends a month of activities around Literary Characters. Students will complete a project in class based on their chosen character.
Each student is welcome to dress up as their book character for the parade. This is voluntary! The students will be displaying their class project at the parade, so a costume is not necessary but an option you can choose in addition to their class project. If you choose to have your child dress up as a literary character, please work with your child to plan a simple homemade costume. It is not necessary to buy a book character costume! If you plan to dismiss your child/ren at the end of the parade, please send a note in that morning or email the teacher and Mrs.Trefry at kelly_trefry@wrsd.net. This will help us ensure that all students are accounted for at dismissal! You can also send in a note or email prior to the 27th and Kelly will add it to a spreadsheet for dismissals. You will still need to come into the school to dismiss your child.
STAR Testing
State regulation 603 CMR 28.03(1)(f) states that all elementary schools must assess each student's reading ability and progress in literacy skills, from kindergarten through third grade at least twice a year. Mayo completed the Beginning of Year (BOY) assessment on September 29th.
If the STAR testing indicates that a student is significantly below relevant benchmarks for age-typical development in specific literacy skills, a letter will be generated to families. We will work to determine which actions within the general education program will meet the student's needs, including differentiated or supplementary evidence-based reading instruction and ongoing monitoring of progress. All parents/guardians will be offered the opportunity for further discussion. These letters will be sent home for grade 3 students. Grades K-2 Teachers will discuss the test results and present letters to families during the upcoming conferences.
TITLE 1 (ESSA)
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the main education law for public schools in the United States. The law holds schools accountable for how students learn and achieve. ESSA aims to provide an equal opportunity for disadvantaged students, including those who get special education. Title 1 provides federal dollars for supplemental educational opportunities, such as evidence-based interventions. We are lucky to have Christi Powers as the Mayo Title 1 tutor. As a Title 1 school, we must ensure that parents are aware that they may request information about the qualifications of their child's teacher. Please see attached letter for additional information.
