Message From Principal Kinney
Hello-
As you will see from the links below, October was filled with lots of learning and a sprinkle of fun. Each week we try to share some snapshots of what has been happening- it's easy to say that this past week has been jam-packed with events. Friday night (after last week's memo went out) Fowler PTO hosted our grades 6-8 Spooktacular event. We had many students join the fun. A HUGE SHOUTOUT to the PTO and many parent and staff volunteers. You will find a short video of our students in action in the links below.
This past Monday many of our grades 3 and 4 students participated in their Halloween Social. Thanks to Ms. Sullivan for organizing this event with our Student Council members and thanks to many staff members who stayed after school to help with the event. Although not a video, there are several slides with some really cool snapshots of our students having fun after school on Monday!
Last week was also Purple Pinky week. Fowler School collected a decent amount of money which will be used to help eradicate Polio. On Monday, each student had their pinky colored purple which was a symbolic way of showing our students what happens to children in third-world countries when they are vaccinated. This is how children are identified as being vaccinated and to prevent them from receiving a second dose.

Greed Meadow Building Project Information
Green Meadow Building Project
On Wednesday, October 25th, the MSBA Board of Directors voted to increase the construction funding limits on the GMES project and others that achieved Project, Scope and Budget Agreement in the same timeframe we did, on eligible construction costs from $432/SF to $568/SF. This increases the maximum MSBA grant, which needs to be confirmed in our Agreement, on the project by approximately $7M, so the MSBA share vs. Maynard share ratio changes from 35%-65% to 44%-56%.
PROJECT VOTE TIMELINE
For a successful new Green Meadow Elementary School, the next required step is the Debt Exclusion Vote: Tuesday, November 7, 2023 (regularly scheduled statewide) 7 AM - 8 PM at Fowler for all voting precincts.
CKLA - Grade 4 Writing Unit “The Contraption Quest”
The fourth grade students really enjoyed working on their literacy unit called “The Contraption Quest”. This was a fun learning experience that used mystery and narrative to help students develop and practice writing skills. One day “The Contraption,” a mechanical device, showed up in the classroom (projected on a screen) . Students created pieces of writing that they could use to interact with “The Contraption” and help solve its puzzles.
Teachers were amazed by how much their students were writing, and how engaged the students were with their writing tasks. The quest created a sense of excitement and mystery that motivated all students, even reluctant writers, to write. When “The Contraption” was projected on the screen, students knew what the expectations were for them as writers. In addition, they had the opportunity to share their writing each day, which enabled them to put on their author hats and take part in creating an engaging writing community. Teachers noted that their students’ writing stamina increased and also that students were organically implementing many of the writing skills learned in the first unit of CKLA.
As “The Contraption Quest” is winding down, fourth graders are looking forward to “building their writing muscles'' and interacting with “The Contraption” again. The suspense is building as students wonder what “The Contraption” has in store for fourth graders in the future!
