Hello everyone, hope you are all enjoying your summers!

This will be the last newsletter before we start up in the Fall for the next school year. Keep your eyes on your inbox, though: around August 1st, we'll be sending you info about paid opportunities available only to MCH students!

Last October we convened a panel of MCH alumna (watch the video here) and have plans to do so again. We hope to not only record it, but also to stream it for MCH distance learners and others who can’t attend in-person. When is a good time of the semester to have a panel? What are your preferences around timing? Weigh in here and we'll do our best with scheduling.

The survey closes on Friday, August 23.

Now that you’ve had a year (or more!) as an MCH student under your belt, what advice or words of encouragement would you give incoming MCHers to help them get excited, organized or prepared for what’s ahead? What do you wish someone had told you? Do you have any tips about moving to MN from out of state, connecting with other distance learners or other suggestions?

There are many local and national data sources that can be accessed to learn about the status of women’s health in Minnesota. However, there is no source that provides Minnesotans with a comprehensive review of the specific indicators of and barriers to women’s health. In order to paint a broad picture of how Minnesota’s women are faring, we have worked with the Minnesota Department of Health to comb through the data and compile the Minnesota Women’s Health Report Card (MN-WHRC), which provides citizens, public health professionals, policymakers and others with a short, visual synopsis that highlights key areas of women’s health.

Thank you and congrats to recent MCH graduate Delali Degbey (MPH '19) who took the lead in putting the #MHWRC18 together!

She discusses her experiences attending the Global Reproductive & Sexual Health Summer Institute and how critical thinking (MCH competency #4) played a role in her MCH journey! The conferences take place on September 9 (Adolescent Sexual Health Summit) and September 10 (Reproductive and Sexual Health Update) on the St. Paul Campus.

The Public Health Review (PHR) is a graduate student-led, online, peer reviewed, open access public health journal that is published by the University of Minnesota Libraries. MCH student Jessie Austin is the spotlight author for the recent March 2019 issue. Congrats, Jessie!

The Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH) Title V MCH Needs Assessment team is hosting community forums to assure community input in establishing its statewide priorities. The in-person events are being held like an open house. You are free to come at any time but MDH will be providing a brief introduction in the first 15 minutes for those that are interested.

The U of M Farmers Market returns to campus every Wednesday from 11 am-2 pm on the Gateway Plaza, just outside McNamara Alumni Center, through September 25. The market features Twin Cities-area vendors who travel two hours or less to sell a variety of fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

While the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities is a hive of activity and enlightenment from September through May, it takes on a different vibe during the summer. Traffic dwindles, parking spots abound,and the campus becomes a hot spot for fun and relaxation. Explore this sampling of places to go and things to do.

Multiple units and departments at the University are working to use their knowledge and expertise to aid immigrants in our local community and at the border. Learn more about your rights when interacting with law enforcement and available resources.

Every month we’ll send you information on MCH Navigator trainings organized around the 12 MCH Leadership Competencies. Each competency sits within one of three larger foci areas: self, others and the community. This month we will focus on Negotiation which is a cooperative process where participants try to find a solution that meets the legitimate interests of involved parties; it is a discussion intended to produce an agreement.
