Learning Together
Community
One of the tenets of the GES vision is that we will work to develop a strong commitment to being a contributing member of a community in each child. That sense of community begins with family and expands to individual classrooms, our entire learning community, our Cook County community, and finally global citizenship. Professor Dr. Dan Siegel states, "The more supportive communities children are a part of, the more aware they become of our interconnected world. These integrated relationships lead to more communication between the different areas of the brain which builds a child’s ability to self-regulate their emotions, mood, empathy, behavior, and more."
GES works with a wide variety of organizations within the Cook County Community and beyond. We are grateful for the many people for the many people who support our efforts through volunteering and know our students are benefitting from this important work. This year the Lynx (5/6) began a new collaboration with Mayor Tracy Benson. Students have been learning about city government and were able to submit essays to the Mayor for a Day Essay Competition.
Charlie Hausner has recently been selected as an honorable mention recipient of the 2023 Mayor for a Day essay competition, sponsored by the League of Minnesota Cities. Charlotte Haussner, a 5th grader at GES, was chosen as one of four honorable mention winners from among more than 500 student essay writers (grades 4-6) representing all areas of Minnesota. Congratulations Charlie!
Mayor For A Day
By Charlie Haussner
Have you ever wished that you could recycle more? If I were mayor for a day, I would try to improve one thing about our city: I would improve recycling. You might ask why I want to improve recycling; well, I want to improve it because a lot of people put their recycling in their garbage cans, which is not only bad for humans, but also very bad for the environment. I think that when we recycle, we are preventing harm to nature. People have to drive into town, and some people don't have the ability to get to the recycling center. I would improve the recycling by getting people to pick up the recycling from house to house, maybe not to pick up every week, but once or twice a month just to start. Once we have more people, they could pick it up once a week . Everyone who wants their recycling to be picked up has to pay a small fee. In conclusion, I think that this improvement would help Grand Marais.
Thank you for sharing your kiddos with us!
