Hello Waters Landing family!
Waters Landing Elementary School is part of the No Place for Hate initiative, which teachers students to respect everyone's differences. We are getting ready to identify some students to be No Place for Hate Rangers, but we want to hear from parents as we start the new year. During the month of January, there will be focus groups meeting with Principal Hammond to share your family's experiences here at WLES, as well as any thoughts and ideas you have to ensure every child is successful. Please sign up here. We hope you will consider attending.
Our January PTA meeting, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 7:00pm in the Media Center. Mr. DeFelice, our PTA president, is looking forward to meeting with you. He is looking for parents who are willing to give some time before or after school to share something they love to do with a group of kids in a before or after school club. He can be reached at jamie.g.defelice@gmail.com.
This week is the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service. Teachers will engage students in a discussion about what community service is and provide students an opportunity to draw a picture and/or write a letter to a senior or a veteran. We have two organizations in our community that we share these pictures and letters with, Operation Second Chance, which serves wounded, injured and ill veterans, and Worldshine Adult Medical Daycare, which provides services for seniors. In addition, this year we will be collecting items for the Stepping Stones Homeless Shelter. Please see the flyer below for details.
We are in the process of preparing for Code Purple, which is a virtual learning day for MCPS students. On a Code Purple Day, students will engage in virtual learning from home. School hours will be from 11:10am-3:40pm, with a lunch break for all students from 12:30-1:00pm. Specific grade-level schedules, Zoom links and information for accessing your child's teacher's Canvas pages will be forthcoming. If you would like to request a device for use at home, please complete this form. If your family is in need of a mifi, please email Mr. Kim at David_K_Kim @mcpsmd.org. MCPS plans to exhaust snow days before implementing Code Purple.
Attention families with students in Grade 5. Please click here for the flyer with Zoom information and access to the course bulletin. Please note that this is a different date than was originally shared in The Whistle. The Grade 5 Class photo is scheduled for Monday, May 6, 2024. Grade 5 promotion will be held the evening of Tuesday, June 11, 2024 and the Grade 5 End of the Year Party will be Wednesday, June 12, 2024 during the school day. More information will be forthcoming.
The MCPS Equity Accountability Model data is now available for the Landing. We are making progress and will continue to do so. The MCPS Equity Accountability Model* provides a detailed and focused assessment of school success and publicly monitors and reports all students’ performance. The Equity Accountability Model moves beyond the typical state and federal aggregate reporting to performance reporting for specific focus groups of students who have not experienced the same level of access, opportunity or success as other students. Please see a comparison of the past two years data below. Click here for a video and more information on the MCPS Equity Accountability Model.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Stay warm!
Proud to be a Dolphin,
Mr. Kim, Assistant School Administrator
Mrs. Nelson, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Hammond, Principal
