A Note From The Principal
Winter weather arrived for sure! Thank you all for the flexibility and understanding as our school district worked to ensure our community, staff, and students were all safe.
Our Parent Teacher Organization is looking for volunteers for our upcoming Glow Dance on Thursday, January 25th. More info to come but if you are able to volunteer to support community events like please look on MyImpactPage to sign up for a small amount of time. Our PTO is also in need of help gathering donations, collecting, and coordinating for BINGO night (scheduled for mid-April). This event was a huge crowd favorite and had us pulling out more chairs midway through the night! As our second largest fundraiser (after our Jog-a-thon, Miles for Mustangs) it would be very impactful to not have this event this year. Please help us make it happen! Reach out to president@chehalempto.org.
In Community,
Melissa

2024-2025 School Start and End Times
From BSD communication 1/15. As we shared with you in November, the district will be adopting a new schedule for school start and end times — what we refer to as our “bell schedule” — for next school year.
This change is based on research and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics that indicate older students benefit from later start times in terms of academic success and mental well-being. For younger students, research indicates that earlier start times have a near-zero effect on academic outcomes, meaning that there’s no measurable negative academic impact from moving to earlier start times at the elementary level.
As we look at start times in neighboring districts, we see that nearly all the districts have already followed the research and shifted to later start times for high school students.
For Chehalem we will be a late-start elementary school, we will be a 8:15 a.m start time and 2:50 p.m. end time.
We recognize that this change may impact after-school child care needs for some families. It's worth noting that 29 of our 34 elementary schools do have some form of on-site, after-school care provided by third-party vendors. In addition, we’re working to ensure that buses will be able to deliver students to all off-site child care providers within their particular school’s boundary.
Celebrating Literacy & Reading Questions To Ask Your Student
At Chehalem are focusing on literacy! There was a reading challenge over Winter break and many students will be getting a reading buddy as a prize for challenging themselves with reading over the break. We know reading is key to all types of learning and that students need to read outside of school to continue to grow that skill. As you are talking to your kids about what they are reading, below are a few questions that are generic enough to use with any book and will get your child thinking.
Tips from our Literacy partners- Beaverton City Library
Download e-books and audiobooks on your phone, tablet or computer. Choose from popular titles, picture books, books for early readers and much more.
