West Weekly Update

Proviso West Newsletter
Dear parents,
We are well underway in our current school year and have begun to identify areas in need of additional attention to ensure students are successful in meeting their goals. Students attending classes on time and on a regular basis are two of our top priorities. We will begin to implement additional strategies to remedy these areas to maximize student engagement within the classroom. We have introduced a hall sweep policy and are developing a class truancy policy to assist students within this area. These initiatives will help improve the culture and climate of our school community. Additionally, it will assist students in maintaining their progress toward graduation requirements.
To assist in these initiatives, Dr. Akiva Carson has joined Proviso West as Assistant Principal for Student Success. Dr. Carson has lived in Bellwood for thirty-eight years, is a Proviso West Alum and has over twenty-five years of experience in education. Dr. Carson completed an educational doctorate in Disability and Equity in Education with a focus on relationships between African American male educators and other school stakeholders. Dr. Carson hopes to assist students and staff in developing a positive school culture and improving student outcomes for all students.
As an administration, we welcome parent and community input/support. If you should have questions, comments, or concerns, please email Ms. Jones or Dr. Carson, Assistant Principals for Student Success @ sjones@pths209.org or acarson@pths209.org

Bus Transportation
The district's transportation department has been working with First Student to establish bus routes for the 2023-2024 school year for all students at all three campuses.

The posted route listing is organized by student ID numbers to make it easy to identify your student's route information.
The routes for our families are also posted on the district website. (Please check the site for updates)
Families are encouraged to download the FirstView app to track their student's bus for its exact location. The Proviso West code is QZ7Y. See instructions below.
Athletics & Activities
As our fall sports season comes to an end, Proviso West football and volleyball teams celebrated Senior Night. Family friends and teammates came out to support their favorite Panther. The senior athletes received a memento to recognize their hard work and dedication. Our student athletes have learned many valuable skills that will help them as they enter their next chapter. We wish our Seniors well in their future endeavors.

School Spotlight
Proviso West Students Enjoy the Harmonies of Fisk University's Chorus
The Fisk University Chorus treated Proviso West students to an incredible performance of several gospel songs on Friday, October 20, in the Cavanaugh Little Theater. It has been a long standing tradition each year at West to have the Nashville based choir travel up to perform for students.
Among the Fisk University Chorus members is one of Proviso West's very own alumnus, Amaree Edwards. She was once a student in the audience who dreamed of performing with such a prestigious group of singers.
"It was very nostalgic performing here today," said Amaree. "I remember I used to watch [Fisk University] perform here as a high school student."
Amaree also had some words of advice for current Proviso prospective music students.
"Keep pushing to reach your dreams. You may be just watching in the audience now, but if you keep pushing you'll be on the stage performing one day."
The musical performance ended with the Panther's own choir members joining them on stage to perform. Proviso West junior, Praxton Robinson brought the house down with a stellar encore solo performance.
"That felt amazing!" said Praxton. "This is why I joined choir because I just love the music."
Thank you to the Fisk University Chorus and their Choral Director, Dr. Christopher Duke for their incredible performances.
News in the Classroom and Beyond
The medical club led by Ms. English partnered with Hillside Police and Fire Department captains to talk to students about emergency health career options and give them a tour of their ambulance and fire trucks. In medical club, Proviso West students are able to explore various health care fields both in and outside of the hospital and traditional settings.
