BCHS Jag PRIDE Newsletter
January 2024

Happy 2024!
We are off and rolling for the Spring 2024 Semester! Jaguars haven't missed a beat in getting involved, learning, and demonstrating incredible Jaguar PRIDE! We were so excited to welcome judges from the Arizona Education Foundation on January 17th and 18th to see the work we are doing at BCHS to support a positive campus culture, strong teaching and learning, and our connections to our community. For nearly two full days, eight judges visited classrooms, talked to students, staff, parents, community members, and also administration to learn about BCHS. We now are waiting to see if we earn the distinction of A+ School of Excellence which will be announced in late February. As we wait, I am so proud of our students, our community, and our staff on the work they do each and every day to support growth and learning at BCHS!
Because we are in our 20th year at BCHS, we have worked to capture the history in a brand new wrap that is featured in our front office. This image is a composite of many, many pictures from 20 years of yearbooks that showcase arts, athletics, academics, and activities our BCHS students compete in and thrive on! We are so thrilled with how this new feature turned out and how it truly represents the heart of BCHS-- our students!
Have an incredible day, and make a positive difference, Jags!

BCHS PRIDE "Be Classy" Students of the Month
At BCHS we use "Be Classy" cards to recognize students for demonstrating positive BC PRIDE behaviors on campus: being prepared, being respectful, having integrity, being disciplined, and ensuring everyone is united!
When a staff member sees a student following the monthly goal OR a student who is going above and beyond, the staff member can give the student a "Be Classy" card to recognize their positive behavior. Students then fill it out and put it in the box in the student lobby by Ms. Susie's desk.
Each month, we draw 10 winners.February GOAL: BCHS Students will show an increase of peer to peer respect and sense of belonging by giving out Jag Hearts through the month of February.
What is a Jag Heart?
The entire month of February, teachers will have various "Jag Hearts" in their classrooms with positive affirmations on them for students to color and give to other classmates who think are deserving, need a pick me up, or just demonstrate the particular character referenced on the Jag Heart. If you are someone who receives a Jag Heart, there is a QR code on the back of it to fill out the survey with what class you are (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th). The class with the most received “jag hearts” has the biggest LOVE.

BCHS Collaborative Team Spotlight: AP History
Mr. Donovan and Mr. Burnton collaborate each week in a vertical team to support our learners in AP World History and AP US History. Through collaboration, Mr. Burnton and Mr. Donovan have identified essential skills that they work to grow from the sophomore to junior level so that a student's experience in these two classes allows them to truly grow in their skills and learning. This team is data focused and goal oriented which leads to their success with students in class and on AP assessments!

Graphic Design is Looking for Inspiration in Nature
Graphic Design students have been out and about on campus taking pictures of both natural and man-made objects that show patterns. It is always fun to see our students learning outdoors and around campus!
BC Staff Begin Training in Gifted Education
Twenty-five BCHS teachers and administrators are working to increase their learning to better support our gifted students! Dr. Amy Sulit started instruction in gifted practices on January 29th at BCHS . The staff is encouraged, excited, and sees the value in our continued learning!
How Long is NEW Learning Retained in the Short Term Memory?
On February 1st, BCHS teachers spent time learning about the brain and how to help students focus on new learning to improve retention and also access to essential information. Department teams discussed strategies, shared ideas, and also worked to learn from resources in The New Classroom Instruction That Works. The stronger the strategies; the stronger the chance a student will be able to access material in class, on assessments, and in the future! Powerful learning!
And the answer to the question is that new learning is retained in the short term memory just 5 to 20 minutes without creating stronger access points such as use of vocabulary or developing strong mental scripts.

Show that Jaguar P.R.I.D.E!
BC Jaguar PRIDE means that our Jaguars are Prepared, Respectful, have Integrity, are Disciplined, and show that Everyone is united! To ensure a safe, focused, and positive learning environment, we PRIDE expectations with students on Thursday in second period.
- This includes our expectation that students keep their cellphones on silent mode in their backpack so students can properly engage in learning.
- Students should be prepared with a fully charged iPad each day and any other items required for class to help with their success.
- It is also critical that students are in class and on time to be present for learning which is critical for their success.
- We also expect our students to be respectful of classrooms, school and personal property each and every day.
Please review our BCHS PRIDE expectations in our Student/Parent Handbook . Taking time to show Jaguar PRIDE is important as we work toward our mission of providing “a safe learning environment with rigorous academic opportunities for all students to graduate as productive, responsible, and contributing citizens!”

The Class of 2024 Countdown to Graduation Begins!
On January 31st and February 1st, seniors met with Mrs. Meyer, DVUSD Graduation Coordinator, and Mrs. Sutton regarding their upcoming graduation ceremony. Mrs. Meyer provided each student a copy of the graduation countdown that provides dates and other information to be aware of as we get closer to May 17th. Mrs. Sutton reminded seniors to focus on their grades to ensure they earn their credits so they can walk at graduation. She also reminded them that following Jaguar PRIDE behavior expectations and making responsible choices are critical. For our seniors, disciplinary infractions could affect their ability to walk in the ceremony, so we have set high expectations for demonstrating exceptional Jaguar PRIDE. Seniors were also given information on how to audition for the senior speech and songs for the ceremony. Time is certainly flying, and the Class of 2024 will be ready to cross that stage before we know it! You've got this, Jags!
Click on the photo below to access the graduation countdown and conduct letter. Also, if you haven't ordered your graduate's cap and gown, please see the picture below for information for Jostens. All graduations must have a BC red cap and gown.
