Resolutions and Goal Setting
We have had a tremendous start to 2024 at Crescent Lake School! Winter Sports began last week and students were thrilled to participate in varying activities. The entire day was a huge success thanks to our students being ready with supplies and equipment as well as having a resilient attitude. I must thank our Winter Sports Coordinator, Mrs. Chrissy Rapoza, for her organization and preparation as well as all of our teachers, staff, and chaperones for helping our students enjoy the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. It was a great start and we are looking forward to continuing in the next three weeks!
Our school theme for the month of January is resolutions & goal setting. Whether it is being inspired to earn an Otter Pride Award, a desire to learn how to skate or snowboard, a drive to learn how to ride a unicycle and join our One Wheeled Wonders Unicycle Team, a love to learn to play an instrument, or perhaps digging in and reading three books a month, it is very important for everyone to have a goal to work towards. January is a perfect time to do this! We are starting a new calendar year with many great opportunities in front of us. Our school is approaching the halfway point of the school year meaning we have time to reshape our perspective and goals. Help your child set and take steps towards reaching a goal of theirs by first taking time to discuss with them their dreams and aspirations. Then, encourage your child to connect with their teacher or a trusted adult at school so we can help them take steps to reach his or her goals. I have included a few links later in this newsletter with more suggestions and ideas for goal setting with your child.
I'm excited to announce that our PTO reached their fundraising goal to purchase a shade structure for our playground at CLS. The structure was ordered last fall and installation was completed last week. Once spring hits, we will be able to install the fabric for the shade. Having a goal gives us all something to work towards!

The Portrait of a Learner is a collaborative process to define the competencies and attitudes necessary for student success. This process will require genuine input from district and building administrators, teachers and staff, students, families, and community and business leaders. The resulting vision will become the district’s North Star which guides school operations and pedagogy around a collective outcome for all students. The district’s Portrait committee is staff representing a variety of positions and all communities; this team is tasked with leading the work toward our Portrait of a Learner. We have attended Portrait training sessions to gain a deeper understanding of the Portrait process and to develop goals, initial action steps, and a timeline for the work. The form link below is your opportunity to provide input regarding your vision of the portrait of GWRSD. Please click the link in the button below to fill out the form that will take 15 seconds to a few minutes depending on your style of feedback.
All Crescent Lake students will be taking this survey at CLS during the month of January.
Please reach out to Mr. Beaverstock by emailing bbeaverstock@govwentworth.k12.nh.us at school if you have questions or concerns about this survey.
Otter Pride Awards for Trimester I
At the end of every trimester of school, Otter Pride Awards are presented to students who earned a 3.0 or higher on all of their Work Habits as reported in the final section of the trimester report card, Overall Work Habits/Life Skills Mastery. These students were recognized at school last Friday, January 5.
For students who are interested in earning the Otter Pride Award, this is a great time of year for students to set a goal for themselves and work towards achieving this award. I encourage students to reach out and speak with his or her teacher and discus how they can work to increase and improve his or her grades in any Work Habit or any other reported area. You can help your child by checking Jump Rope, our online grading program, for current grades and identifying areas to improve.
Your emphasis with your child on his or her growth and progress is extremely important. Thank you for your help; we work as a team in your child's education.
Calling all families of Drama Club & Set Crew students!

Health Class News
We have been discussing the importance of healthy routines related to nutrition, personal hygiene, and sleep. This winter, students in grades 5 & 6 will be learning about puberty as part of the Human Growth and Development Unit, which is a component of the school district’s health curriculum. Please see the parent letter that will be sent home this week with your child or contact Mrs. Bronson with any questions. Instruction will begin the week of January 29th. Happy Winter!
Setting Goals with your Child
4th Grade Introductions to Band Instruments in January
Starting last week, fourth grade students will expand their Music Education by being able to try all the band instruments throughout the month of January. We call this the "petting zoo". Every Monday, for 5 weeks, each 4th grade class will have an extra music class with Miss Chassie. Each week they will try a new instrument. At the end of the 5 weeks, if your child is interested, they can sign up to take instrumental lessons with Miss Chassie. Lessons are during the school day, at no cost. Information about the instrument rental program will be sent out at the end of January.

Students and staff enjoyed the rink at Pop Whalen for our first Winter Sports Day. Last year, CLS traveled to Rochester because we were not certain the upgrades to Pop Whalen would be complete. It was great to return to our local rink this year for our program!

Great Start to Winter Sports
Our Winter Sports program began on Thursday, January 4, and will continue the next three Thursdays in January. If we need to cancel for any reason, Thursday, February 1 has been designated as a make-up day for Winter Sports.
Below are two documents that are important to review and read for information about out Winter Sports Program Days. We want all students to be ready, confident, and secure when we begin Winter Sports next month. It is an exiting time and opportunity for everyone! Please reach out to Mrs. Rapoza at crapoza@sau49.org if you have any questions.
PTO Shade Project Installed
Our new shade structure has been installed on our playground area at CLS. Our PTO has been working on this project for several years and it is exciting that together we have reached our goal! The fabric for the top will be added in April as we head into the warmer and sunny season. Thank you to all families for your donations and efforts - our students will greatly appreciate the shade!
Holiday Cheer Shared with Others
Our CLS Student Council led a campaign to create holiday placemats for residents at the Mountain View Community nursing home in Ossipee. Students created many beautiful and cheerful messages for the residents!
Winter Recess Fun
Winter recess can be a lot of fun, especially on the warmer winter days! If students want to play in the snow, they need to be prepared and be wearing the Frosty Five: snow pants, snow boots, winter jacket, a winter hat, and either gloves or mittens.
Each foster, adopted, or child living with relatives presents unique joys and challenges to those who undertake their care. If/when the caregivers of these children need help, the Central NH Foster & Adoptive Parent Support Group utilizes their members' collective experiences so that no one feels alone on this journey.
The group's mission is to support, encourage, and educate foster, adoptive, and relative caregiver families in our local area with monthly meetings where caregivers meet and kids play together. The organization provides resources, training, and most importantly, an opportunity to share experiences that help navigate complex family scenarios. Dinner is provided for $5 per family and childcare is provided by background-checked volunteers.
Contact the coordinator of the program, Beth Maltzie, at bmaltzie@gmail.com for more information.

The first trimester report cards have been sent home to all families - but know that you can always access and view your child's progress throughout the trimester and school year by accessing JumpRope.
JumpRope is the grading program that our teachers use to track and record student progress towards our grade level curriculum standards. Attached to the link below is a brief overview of what JumpRope is and how it works for the parent/guardian viewpoint. All parents/guardians should have received a welcome email to log in the JumpRope system. Our Curriculum Director, Dr. Katey Hills, is in the process of creating a series of short videos on various features of JumpRope and competency-based grading that will be posted and shared in the coming weeks. If you have not received the welcome email and login information, please reach out to our Dr. Hills at khills@sau49.org
At the end of each trimester of school, we will be presenting students who have earned a 3.0 or higher in all Work Habits in the summary section of their report card the Otter Pride Award. Families can track their child's progress towards earning the Otter Pride Award by logging into JumpRope.
Upcoming PTO Meeting

2024-2025 GWRSD District Calendar
Our district has just approved a school year calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. You can click on the button below for a link to an online view of next year's school calendar.
Winter Recess and Lost & Found
Although we currently have no snow, the winter weather is here to stay for the next several months! Weather can change drastically between morning drop-off and recess time. Please help your child be ready for recess by having them prepared and wearing layers of clothing, winter hats, mittens or gloves, and winter boots. When the snow returns, all students must be wearing the Frosty Five (Hat, gloves/mittens, winter coat, snow pants, and snow boots) in order to sled or play in the snow.
Our Lost & Found table and clothes rack has expanded drastically in the last month. Is your child missing a sweatshirt, jacket, or even a lunch box? Your child's missing items can very well be on our Lost & Found table located between the main office, the gym, and the Dining Room. In order to help losing items, please label your child's items - especially jackets - so we can help get them to the rightful owner.
