WHITELEY WILDCAT UPDATE
August 13, 2022
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
MEET THE TEACHER
Families are welcome to meet their teacher on Tuesday, August 16th (1:30-2:30).
During this time students meet their teacher, their classmates, drop off their supplies, and check-out their new classroom! Although the event is scheduled for an hour, this is a come and go event. There will be no presentations from the teachers during this time. We will have staff available throughout the building to help direct families to their classrooms.
ARRIVAL
We want to share our arrival practices that are the same from prior years. Our kindergarten through second grade students will line up outside door 3. We will have a designated line for our morning kindergarten students. Our 3rd through 6th grade students will line up outside door 8. This allows our little ones to safely move to their classrooms without being caught in the traffic of intermediate students. Students riding buses will enter the building directly through our main entrance. Once our first bell rings at 8:15 students will enter the building.
To ensure safety of everyone we ask that our parents follow these practices
If you are dropping off your student with a vehicle please do not park in our parking lot. Our process is a drop and go. Parents will need to pull all they way up in the parking lot and have your child exit on the sidewalk side of the parking lot once you are pulled up all the way.
Once your child exits the vehicle we ask parents to pull out of the parking lot, and not wait to watch your child walk up to the door.
Please do not attempt to park on the surrounding streets that have traffic/parking signs posted from the village that state there is no standing or parking.
Please remember that when driving into a school zone it is a hands free cell phone zone for drivers
We ask that when you enter your parking lot your child(ren) are ready to exit the vehicle
Please do not block any driveways of community members or streets while waiting in line to pick up on Westbury Drive.
DISMISSAL
As many of you know Whiteley is a landlocked campus which makes dismissal an area where we continue to look at to improve for the safety of our students and efficiency. One key issue is that the grassy area where our car riders line-up is often impacted by weather conditions and the number of bikes, which at times can be dangerous when students are biking home in the midst of our car riders. Our school leadership team, which is comprised of staff members from each grade level and area, have created a slight adaptation that we hope will be an improvement. Below is our dismissal process, which will impact our car riders:
Bus riders will be dismissed and those students will immediately load their buses in the main entrance lot.
Bike riders will walk to the bike racks gather their bikes, and walk them safely off of the property to ensure safety
Walkers will be dismissed at the bell to begin theri trek home and cross safely at the cross walks
Car riders will line-up on our blacktop. This is a change as prior we lined up in the grassy area, which at times was not usable with different weather conditions.
If you are picking up kindergarten students in the afternoon, we will have a designated line for the first few months of school until they become acclimated to school and learn their numbers. If they have an older sibling they can wait with their older sibling by their family number.
This year all families will receive a placard that will go in the front of the car. This year we will use numbers for families. Students will also have a yellow number card that will be zip tied onto their backpack. Once a parent pulls into the parking lot we will call the number on the walkie and staff that are on duty will gather the students with that number and dismiss them to the car.
Please do not block any driveways of community members or streets while waiting in line to pick up on Westbury Drive.
Why numbers? Many of our families are from a variety of cultures and utilizing numbers will prevent language barriers and allow students to correctly hear their identifying number.
Our staff and school leadership team ask for your patience as we transition to utilizing numbers and a safer area for dismissal. The staff has put a lot of thought, time and energy into creating a safer dismissal.
