It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve the Cocoa High families and community as Principal of Cocoa High School. Our teachers, staff, and admin worked very hard this summer to prepare for the return of students with the goal of making SY2024 our best ever! We look forward to working in partnership with our students and families to see each child grow into their fullest and most positive potential.

We talk a lot about Tiger PRIDE at Cocoa High. The characteristics we hope to help our students develop are well explained in our PRIDE acronym: Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Empathy. We plan to find ways to reward and acknowledge students this year for exhibiting these character traits both on campus and off, in the classroom and on the playing field, at home and at work.

Each week I will send out information about upcoming events and celebrations of student success. I hope that you will find this communication helpful and welcome feedback on how I can further improve our contact with families. Please be advised that we are now utilizing Focus as our phone, email, and SMS notification system. Therefore, having accurate contact information is critical so we can communicate with our families. The SY2024 Student Code of Conduct is now available: https://www.brevardschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=4925 Students received the mandatory parent/ student acknowledgement form from their 4th (middle school) or 5th (high school) period teachers. These forms were due back by Friday, August 18th. If you have not returned your form, please do so ASAP. Another copy can be printed from our school website as well.

BPS Consent Forms for Student Nicknames:

Any student who wishes to go by a name other than their legal name (this includes nicknames like Tom for Thomas, or AJ for Anthony James) must submit a parent consent form. No Food Deliveries to Campus: Per district and school policy, students may NOT receive outside food deliveries from companies such as GrubHub, DoorDash, or UberEats. This is a security violation and also puts the student out of are from where they should be on campus. Food that is delivered will be turned away by admin and other staff, and students could face disciplinary action.

Our Athletics and Activities Director Mark Carstens is always available to answer questions about students who are interested in playing a sport or participating in any other type of extra curricular activity. We will begin in the cafeteria promptly at 6 pm, then families will be able to follow their student's schedule to meet the teachers. Ms. Williams, our AP of Curriculum, is planning to have additional informational sessions available for families to attend throughout the evening. Student attendance in class is the best predictor of academic success. At Cocoa High, we have had some issues with students being tardy to class. Students are permitted 5 minutes between each class, which is ample time to get to any classroom from any location on campus. The Tardy Policy (see image below) will go into effect beginning Monday, August 21. Teachers are encouraged to also reward or acknowledge students who are on time as way to celebrate and incentivize good attendance habits. We will also be holding "No Tardy Parties" at the end of each quarter as a way to congratulate those students who are consistently on time to every class.

We have made a few changes to the bell schedule for this school year. In order to accommodate FAST testing, we pushed lunches back by a class period. Please note that 1st period begins at 8:45. We have many students being dropped off by parents after 8:45, which makes your student late to first period class. This can have a profound impact on your student's ability to be successful in that class. Please help your child by getting them to school by 8:30 am at the latest so they can eat breakfast, which is free for all students, and get to class on time.
