BCHS Jag PRIDE Newsletter
November/December 2023

Congratulations, Jags, on an Amazing Fall Semester!
Happy Holidays and congratulations on completing the fall 2023 semester! I am so proud of the learning and the dedication our students put into their growth in all areas of the high school experience-- from academics, to athletics, to community service, performances, art, and working together. The effort, dedication, and persistence has paid off. From our National Merit Semi-finalist, Aiden, to our State Champion Girl's Swimmers, to our Region Team and Coach of the Year in Football, and to our state-awarded "A" Rating, I am so incredibly proud of BCHS! I am also grateful to our staff that works so hard to support our learners each and every day!
Now, it is time for a well-deserved break and to gear up for the second semester where there are more opportunities to learn and grow! I am also so excited to showcase the incredible work of our school during our A+ visit in January. The team will have a deep look into our classes, programs, and community experience based on our 70 page application we submitted in August. This opportunity will provide BCHS feedback to help us continue to grow and the opportunity to earn the AEF A+ School of Excellence award.
I want to wish each of our students, our staff, our families and our community a beautiful holiday and an amazing New Year! Thank you for all for nurturing the essential partnership in supporting our Jaguars! See you in 2024!

Spring Semester Flex Time Adjustment
We are excited to announce a change to our Flex Time schedule for the second semester. After careful consideration and feedback from both students and teachers, we have decided to move our Flex Intervention Time from Tuesday and Thursday to Wednesday and Thursday each week.
The purpose of this adjustment is to allow students to choose sessions for the week that support their immediate academic needs. The move to a Wednesday and Thursday schedule will allow students to participate in timelier sessions, which will increase the overall effectiveness of Flex Time. The Flex Time bell schedule will remain the same, with 42 minutes of intervention time built in between periods two and three.
At Boulder Creek High School, we are dedicated to continuously refining our practices to meet the academic needs of all of our students, and Flex Time is an opportunity that provides them with a supportive learning environment that promotes academic growth and success!
STEM for Middle School Girls!
For her Certificate of Academic Distinction Project, Senior Faith Pursley is coordinating a STEM Night at BCHS for middle school girls to help grow their access and peak their interest for high school level science, technology, engineering, and math courses and learning. Faith has coordinated BCHS teachers and students to help engage middle school students in activities in our classrooms! Come on out and learn about STEM on January 11th from 5-7pm!

Winter Sports Update
Girls Basketball
This season has presented unique challenges for our young team. While we anticipated some growing pains and adversity, I am proud to say that we have not only faced them head-on but have emerged stronger as a result.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a first-year head coach is gaining the trust and understanding my players. Learning about there individual strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations on the court has been an enriching experience that I cherish. Together, we have built a solid foundation of teamwork, communication, and support.
Throughout our journey, I have emphasized the importance of having fun and enjoying the game. Basketball is not just about winning, but also the memories we create, the friendships we forge, and the personal development we experience. I have witnessed firsthand the genuine smiles and laughter shared during practices, games, and even the tough moments.
As we continue with the season, we’ll continue to stay focus, trust the process, and have confidence in our abilities as a team. Overcoming challenges is what makes us better, both individually and collectively.
I am incredibly proud and honored to be the girls basketball coach. We’ll continue to give our all, have fun, and make this season one to remember.
Boys Basketball
Boys Basketball team is off to a good start with a 5-1 record so far! Despite facing a very challenging schedule and battling injuries, they're showcasing true grit and teamwork on the court.
Wrestling
This weekend Wrestling is heading into the DVUSD Duels at O'Connor. We are expecting the women's team Maya M, Emma C and Sophie D to lead this weekend over all the DVUSD High schools.
The Men's team is projecting Alex O, Hayden G, Kaiden D, Thomas L and Dax M to lead the men this weekend over all the DVUSD High Schools.
We have a home match on January 10th and Senior Night on January 24th.
Girls Soccer
We are very happy about how our program has started the season. Overall, the teams have been working very hard, which work paid off in the success we had in the preseason tournament, making it to the championship and only narrowly losing out in a shootout. Most importantly, the players are having fun and are working together well, which makes me excited about what we can accomplish together this season. I am also very encouraged by all the support that we have received from the families and friends of our players, which really makes a difference in creating a great playing experience for everyone.
Boys Soccer
The BCHS Boys Soccer Program is off to a great start this year. The athletes are doing a great job of executing the daily tasks given to them by the coaches, both on and off the field. We have been competitive in every game and seeing growth everyday. We are continuing the process of focusing on one day at a time, one game at a time, one training at a time and one task at a time. I am especially proud of our captains embodying the responsibilities given by the coaching staff, being accountable and driving the belief behind the principles of the culture.

End of Semester Academic Reminders
As we approach the end of the Fall semester, the conversation naturally turns to grades. However, these grades are far more than mere numbers; they hold a pivotal role in shaping our students' educational paths and future opportunities.
High school grades serve as windows into our students' academic performances. Each grade encapsulates not only a student's understanding of the curriculum but also their ability to apply concepts and unwavering commitment to learning. Grades go beyond simple evaluations; they function as diagnostic tools, aiding students in recognizing their strengths and areas that could use improvement. This heightened self-awareness is invaluable for personal and academic growth, enabling our students to focus on refining their skills and addressing challenges head-on.
Along with grades, understanding high school credits is a crucial aspect of your student's academic journey. Credits represent the successful completion of coursework in various subjects and are essential for graduation. Each credit earned brings your student one step closer to their diploma, opening doors to future educational and career opportunities.
Our school follows DVUSD guidelines, and students need a certain number of credits in core subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as elective courses. Encourage your student to meet with their academic advisor to ensure they are on track to fulfill these requirements.
If your student is facing challenges in meeting credit requirements, our school offers credit recovery programs and support services. Whether through additional tutoring, summer school, or alternative learning opportunities, we are committed to helping every student succeed. Please contact our guidance counselor for more information on available resources.
As parents, your role is integral in supporting your children on their academic journeys. Understanding high school grades allows you to actively engage with your children, providing guidance and encouragement. Regular communication with teachers and counselors offers insights into your child's progress and fosters collaborative efforts to ensure their success.
Remember, high school grades are more than just entries on a report card; they encapsulate a detailed narrative of your child's academic journey, work ethic, and potential for future success. As we navigate the academic year together, let's collectively appreciate the profound role that grades play in shaping our students into well-rounded, capable individuals, poised to embrace the challenges of higher education and beyond.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dean Kirkpatrick
Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction

Future Focused: Jaguars Learn Real-World Skills at BC!
Law In Society Learns from Field Experts
Mr. Rice, our Law In Society teacher, creates a positive, rich learning environment in many ways, but a class highlight to support real-world, relevant learning are the experts he brings in from law enforcement professions. This semester professionals from Phoenix PD, Scottsdale SWAT, the FBI, and other agencies have presented to students sharing information on traffic stops, legal processes, and technology in law enforcement. It is a rich, engaging way to learn! Thank you to all of our guest speakers and also to Mr. Rice for making it happen!

Show that Jaguar P.R.I.D.E!
BC Jaguar PRIDE means that our Jaguars are Prepared, Respectful, have Integrity, are Disciplined, and show that Everyone is united! To ensure a safe, focused, and positive learning environment, we PRIDE expectations with students on Thursday in second period.
- This includes our expectation that students keep their cellphones on silent mode in their backpack so students can properly engage in learning.
- Students should be prepared with a fully charged iPad each day and any other items required for class to help with their success.
- It is also critical that students are in class and on time to be present for learning which is critical for their success.
- We also expect our students to be respectful of classrooms, school and personal property each and every day.
Please review our BCHS PRIDE expectations in our Student/Parent Handbook . Taking time to show Jaguar PRIDE is important as we work toward our mission of providing “a safe learning environment with rigorous academic opportunities for all students to graduate as productive, responsible, and contributing citizens!”
