What's Happening in the AIG Classroom?

Elementary: Our 3rd grade students were introduced to tangrams, magic squares, and mental math strategies in their mathematics group and read various science articles in their reading group. Our 4th grade students finished the year reading Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, and our 5th grade students worked through the Big6 research process. Both 4th and 5th grade completed a 'Math Around the World' unit in their mathematics groups.


Middle: All AIG students were introduced to the Habits of Mind and explored the first four habits more in-depth during STING enrichment. Math I students participated in mathematical concept seminars. Our 6th graders used big concepts to write personification poems with their reading of World Without Fish. Our 7th graders completed the children's picture book project on Frederick Douglass using the BookCreator site. Our 8th graders explored poetry, theme, and concepts through lyrics and music.

Welcome 3rd Grade!

We welcomed 3rd graders to the AIG classroom for 4th quarter, introducing them to various critical thinking skills and strategies. Students in the reading group explored topics through science articles.

Novel Study: Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

4th grade reading students read the novel, explored the Great Depression and the 1930's, and discussed the characters and themes of the book. Students were also introduced to journaling, free writing, and timed writing.

Math Around the World

4th and 5th grade students studied math and math strategies from many countries, including Egyptian math, Indian/Vedic math, Chinese and Japanese numbers, and Roman Numerals.

'Habits of Mind'

During STING enrichment, all students were introduced to the 16 habits of mind and discussed how these habits help us be successful both personally and academically. Students looked more in-depth at the first four habits: persisting, impulsivity, empathy, and flexible thinking.

Poetry & Personification

6th grade ELA students looked at big concept words from World Without Fish and create personification poems.

Children's Book & Frederick Douglass

7th grade ELA students showed their understanding of Frederick Douglass and story elements by creating children's picture books. They used the resource, BookCreator.com, to create e-books for this project.

End of Year AIG Services Wrap-Up


By the Numbers


At East Garner ES, we started the year serving 23 students in 4th and 5th grades. Through nominations and data review (CogAt & IOWA testing), we ended our school year serving 38 students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.


At Holly Ridge MS, we started the year with 212 AIG identified students. Through student, parent, and teacher nominations, we were able to review data, gather student work samples, and test additional advanced learners. We finished the year with 237 AIG identified students.


Onward and Upward


Congratulations to our 5th graders heading to middle school! Transition letters were sent home to parents with student report cards on May 26.


Congratulations to our 8th graders heading to high school! Parent letters and differentiated education plans for high school were sent home with students the last week of school.
