Downingtown Cyber Academy Update
November 10, 2023
Dear DCA Families,
Report Cards for Marking Period 1 are now posted in Infinite Campus. Please take time to review grades and discuss progress as a family. Check out this linked document for some helpful ways to engage in discussion. Be sure to highlight achievements and plan a path forward for how to maintain and/or improve. Parent/Caretaker support as a Learning Coach is essential in ensuring student success.
To celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13th, we are encouraging our DCA students to participate in one of two ways:
- Students can choose someone in their life and make them a card, baked good, email, text, or craft to let them know how much they appreciate them.
- We are doing a Thanksgiving collection at the DASD Central Administration Building for the homeless families we have in the DASD. Students can drop off items in the green box in the lobby of Central Administration on Monday, November 13th. (They’re welcome to come before or after if the 13th doesn’t work for them!!). More information is below!
The week of November 13-20 is American Education Week. Check below for ways to celebrate!
If you have not done so already, please sign up for a Parent/Caretaker-Teacher Conference.
Conferences will be held from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm and then 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on November 21st. Additional conference times for ninth grade families are also available on November 20th. Conferences are on a first-come, first served basis. Please sign up today!
We encourage you to sign up and take advantage of this valuable connection with your child's teachers. Together, we can ensure your child's continued success and well-being. We look forward to meeting with you virtually and working collaboratively to support your child's educational journey.
Fondly,
Dr. Kecia Nesmith, Principal and Curriculum Supervisor

Students who attend DCA full-time will take/be provided the link in Advisory during the week of Nov.13-17.

Teachers/Staff will also complete the survey.
Thank you for your attention and participation in this survey. Your feedback helps us to continue what we do well and improve as needed.
Asynchronous Day
There will be no required middle school Zooms on Monday, November 20th due to the early dismissal. Students will still have asynchronous work to complete and teachers will still provide office hours.
Student-led conferences
This year, 6th-8th grade students will be conducting student-led parent/teacher conferences. They will work with their teachers all month on the process. This approach fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership of their learning journey, as students actively showcase their achievements, set goals, and discuss areas for improvement. These conferences empower students to become more self-aware, confident, and accountable for their education, making them active participants in their own learning process.
When you sign up for conferences for your middle school student, you will select ONE conference time. All of your students' core teachers will be in the Zoom.
Health 7 Substitute Teacher
Ms. Goeske will be out for several weeks, so Health 7 will be covered by Mr. Frinzi. Mr. Frinzi currently teaches Health 6, PE 6, PE 7, Health 8 and PE 8 in the DCA. He also teaches full-time at Downingtown West.

The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week.
Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education.
The conventions of both organizations subsequently adopted resolutions of support for a national effort to raise public awareness of the importance of education. In 1921, the NEA Representative Assembly in Des Moines, Iowa, called for designation of one week each year to spotlight education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: “An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs.”
The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938.

Overcoming Adversity with Philadelphia Eagles Sydney Brown
The Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is honored to host Philadelphia Eagles Safety Sydney Brown for an enlightening session on homelessness awareness as part of Homelessness Awareness Week.
The event will take place on November 14th at 6:00 PM in the Downingtown High School West Auditorium. Sydney Brown's life story is a testament to the incredible resilience and determination that can emerge from challenging circumstances. Hailing from London, Ontario, Sydney, alongside his twin brother Chase and younger sister, grappled with financial hardships that seemed to preclude the possibility of ever taking vacations. However, their family's fortunes took a distressing turn when their mother, Rachel Brown, fell ill, lost her job, and subsequently lost their family home. Faced with adversity, the Brown family found themselves in a homeless shelter. Despite their limited means, Sydney and Chase discovered their love for football, a sport that would become the driving force in their lives. While the allure of ice hockey, Canada's beloved national sport, remained financially elusive, the brothers wholeheartedly embraced football as their newfound passion. Their unwavering commitment to football eventually led them to Florida, where they enrolled at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School in Bradenton. With the invaluable support of a host family, they had the opportunity to continue their education and pursue their athletic dreams. Sydney's journey, from homelessness to becoming the Philadelphia Eagles' third-round draft pick, serves as a remarkable testament to his resilience and unwavering determination.
During the event, Sydney will share his story of overcoming adversity and achieving success against all odds. He will engage with the audience, answering questions and providing valuable insights into his journey. At the conclusion of the session, attendees had the unique opportunity to meet Sydney, take photographs, and have memorabilia signed.
$20 per person to have an item signed and photograph.
A Night with the Lenape Community

DePaul is a co-curator of the Lenape Cultural Center in Easton, PA, and the exhibit "Existing Artistry, Enduring Presence: The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania" at Temple University.
