Good Luck to State Fair Competitors

Good luck to all our youth participating at the MN State Fair. Be sure to reference the MN 4-H at the State Fair exhibitor website and utilize the MN 4-H App. Please take some time to thank all the folks who helped make your State Fair experience a success.

State Fair Livestock Interviews

Please be sure you complete your livestock interview before Tuesday, August 22. Completing interview prior to the fair is required for all participants except dairy. Dairy will complete their interview at the fair. More information can be found on the MN 4-H At the State Fair website.

Code of Conduct Reminder

As we prepare for the State Fair and other fall events, please be sure you are aware of an abiding by the youth, volunteer and parent code of conduct.

Post Fair Survey

Please take some time to share about your county fair experience in the post fair survey. As a reminder, constructive feedback includes identifying a problem and then offering tangible solutions to solve that problem. Excessively harsh feedback with no solutions is not actionable and will not be tolerated. Post-fair survey results will be used by staff, committees, and the fair board for planning future Nobles County Fairs. The post fair survey will close on August 31.

Thank You Notes

If you did not write your thank you note at the fair for ribbon sale, pork auction or banners, please get those notes submitted ASAP. You will not receive your premium check until we have your thank you notes in the office. If you are unsure or need thank you notes, please contact the office.

County Fair Photos

Be sure to check out all the photos from fair week at z.umn.edu/NoblesCountyFairPhotos.

W-9 Forms for youth earning $600 or more this 4-H year

If you received $600 or more in auction or premium earnings, you must complete a IRS W-9 form. This is a request for information from a 4-H member because a 1099-MISC form needs to be completed.

Wendy sent out emails this week to members who need to complete the W-9 form. Please complete this ASAP and return to the office. DO NOT email this form.

Attend 4-H dairy tour

Join us for the 4-H dairy tour– a unique opportunity for youth in grades 7+. This three-day, two-night experience runs from October 19-21, and will give young people the opportunity to explore the dairy landscape in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. Youth will stay overnight in a hotel with adult chaperones and be transported via motorcoach.

During this tour, youth will have the chance to explore different dairy farms, processing facilities and careers within the dairy industry. Potential tour stops include but not limited to Geno-Source, Iowa Dairy Center and Kieffer farms.

For more information and to register, visit z.umn.edu/4HDairyTour.

Growing Local: Boards and Commissions Workshop Series

Have you been looking for ways to boost community engagement and attract new people to serve on local boards and committees? In partnership with the Southwest Initiative Foundation, Extension is offering the Growing Local: Boards and Commissions Workshop Series! This is your opportunity to build more inclusive boards and committees that make a difference in your community.

Workshop Topics

  • Understanding our own expectations around boards and commission and how people show up in that space

  • Practices to support greater equity, inclusivity and belonging

  • Strategies to welcome and value new voices, perspectives and ideas

Offal Wildlife Watching

The Offal Wildlife Watching project is a citizen science and research project with the University of Minnesota Extension. The purpose of our research is to better understand what and when Minnesota wildlife species use hunter-provided deer gut piles (also called offal) and to understand how offal affects wildlife food webs. We ask volunteer deer hunters to set up camera traps on the offal they leave in the field for one month to capture images of wildlife visitors. Anyone can help us classify and identify wildlife in the images captured each hunting season via our project page at Zooniverse.org. We’re actively recruiting hunter volunteers (we have camera equipment to loan and can provide tech support at any time!) and invite anyone interested to follow our results. More information can be found at: offal.umn.edu or feel free to get in touch at offal@umn.edu or 612-626-0109.
