Hump Day Happenings
Issue 4 ~ 9/13 thru 9/19
Clubs, Enrichment, Activities... Whatever you call them we've got'em at Kilgour!
In addition to the drama... I mean Drama club we also have musical opportunities in the form of band, choir, and some students partnering with Suzuki to perfect their solos! We have some 5th graders working on their "abra cadabras" with Magic Club starting next week. As well as a group of 6th grade Recycle clubbers/helpers that make sure we're taking care of the environment.
I can't forget about our future strategists that will be learning to think before they act in Chess club also starting soon. We have several Girl Scout Troops that will be hosting their meetings within the halls of Kilgour. I really hope they stop by the Resource Coordinator office when it's cookie ordering time. Troop leaders if you're reading this, please remember who booked those rooms for you. (Whispering... she likes cookies).
Closing out the club roundup, I want to share news of a few new clubs we're looking to get started. One of our Kilgour parents has volunteered to get a Cubing club started. Our Lead agency Activities Beyond the Classroom (ABC) will be starting a Ukulele and a Visual Arts club. Both clubs will be offered to K-6th grade students at no cost to our families! Continue reading this newsletter for specific details.

These clubs are being offered free to students. Due to the limited number of slots available we will do our best to make sure as many students as possible can be accommodated. Please know, we will be tracking and ensuring that the opportunities are spread across our community. These clubs will run through December with new clubs starting in January.

Sponsorship... Another Way We Get Things Done
Dear parents,
We hope that you are enjoying a great start to the school year! To our incoming Kindergarten parents in particular, welcome to the Kilgour community! We are excited to get to know your children this school year.
We are so fortunate to have a terrific staff that enjoys strong support from our PTA. Funds raised by the PTA offset our teachers' out-of-pocket expenses for classroom supplies; subsidize field trips and student clubs; keep our building and grounds painted and landscaped; and much more. Over the years, the PTA has helped to meet these needs and grow further opportunities by partnering with various businesses associated with Kilgour parents and friends. These businesses become "sponsors" for a given school year and enjoy promotion through school communications and community events. The associated sponsorship fees to the PTA (a registered 501c3) go directly to the many needs noted above.
We depend on your help identifying potential sponsors, so please contact Gwenn O’Shea at sponsorship@kilgourpta.org with ideas or for more information. Information on sponsorship levels and pricing is also available here.
In addition to sponsorship, you can always support the PTA through donated auction items or gift certificates, promotional discounts, and cash donations. And most importantly, we hope that you'll consider joining the PTA now that the school year is underway.

A Message from Jamie Christian and the Project Connect Team
Hello Kilgour Community,
My name is Jamie Christian and I am excited to be a part of the Project Connect team and your school community as the liaison providing services to students and families experiencing homelessness. This position is mandated through the federal McKinney-Vento Act. This federal act provides advocacy and services to remove educational barriers for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Under this federal definition students qualify for services if they lack a fixed, regular or permanent nighttime residency. This includes those who are: sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; staying in motels, trailer parks, or camp grounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative; staying in shelters or transitional housing; or sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or similar settings. Project Connect also supports students who are unaccompanied or are not in the care of a custodial parent or guardian.
The purpose of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Program is to ensure that all children and youth, including preschoolers, have equal access to the same free and appropriate public education as non-homeless children and youth.
With that being said, I will be working alongside families of students who are experiencing homelessness and can provide assistance with the following:
Enrollment assistance
Transportation support
Surrogacy services for unaccompanied youth
Community resource referrals (shelters, food, benefits, housing)
Connection to academic, social, and emotional support
School supplies, backpacks, uniforms, hygiene items and other necessary items
I am looking forward to collaborating with the school’s registrar, enrollment personnel, administration, school counselors, school social workers, and additional school staff to best ensure the needs of Project Connect students are being met.
To refer a student whom you know or suspect is experiencing homelessness, please reach out to me via email or complete this online referral form. You can also contact your school social worker to complete the referral.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to partnering with you all!

Meet Sarah Hellmann, Kilgour's School Social Worker
Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year!
My name is Sarah Hellmann and I am returning for the third year as Kilgour’s School Social Worker. I am so excited to reconnect with our returning students and get to know our new students and families! My two main roles are Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and attendance. This year I am facilitating whole-class SEL lessons in every K-2 classroom weekly in addition to small groups among varying grades each quarter. I am also available for crisis situations and to connect you with community resources (Project Connect, food, utility assistance, winter essentials, school supplies, etc). Last but not least, I will be heading this year’s holiday supports again with the help of PTA Outreach – Harvest Fundraiser (10/16-10-27), Costume Closet (10/30-10/31), Thanksgiving meals (11/17-11/21), and Lights of Hope (November-12/13). Stay tuned for more on those soon!
Outside of work, I enjoy exploring local parks with my dog, weekend trips to nearby cities, checking out local restaurants, and cheering for all Cincinnati teams!
You can find me in room 004, reach me via the contact information below. Email is the preferred way to contact me as I’m in and out of my office all day. Let me know how I can support you and your family!
