Our District’s Early Learning Preschool prepares students for their first steps in their educational journey. The teachers and staff work with students of all abilities in an inclusive setting, in partnership with families and the community. Click HERE for this week’s ‘60 Seconds’ episode, as we visit with Max, a preschool student, and learn about how many have worked together to provide opportunities for him to learn alongside his classmates with a unique communication device.

Our District has created the SCS Responsible Restart Comprehensive Guide - one document in one location outlining our District’s policies and procedures. This document should be used as a guide, allowing you to quickly find answers to your questions. The guide can also be found at www.strongnet.org/restart.

As we have seen throughout the pandemic, factors can change on a daily basis and this Guide will remain adjustable and flexible to respond to state and local health guidelines.

Our District is excited to announce a partnership agreement with the nationally recognized school enrichment provider, Right At School, to provide before- and after-school care for elementary students this fall. Right at School will be offering before- and after-school care every weekday (Monday-Friday) at each of the elementary school buildings in our District, beginning in August, 2021. Strongsville High School has been named a 2021 U.S. News “Best High School” and earned the #41 spot in rankings of Ohio high schools. Strongsville High School has continually improved its ranking over the past four years, ranking #115 in 2017, #95 in 2018, #73 in 2019, and #49 in 2020 in this annual list. Strongsville High School also ranks #1,255 nationally, up from #1,386 nationally in last year’s listing. Strongsville City Schools offers several opportunities for community members to serve on Board of Education committees, with the goal of continued growth for our District. The Facilities Development Committee is focused on the maintenance of our buildings, as well as the vision for future growth and development of our physical space (land and buildings). Mrs. Bernadette Oppedisano is an Educational Aide at Muraski Elementary School. Mrs. Oppedisano has been working in our District for 12 years, having also worked as a monitor at both Surrarrer Elementary and at Strongsville High School, and in Muraski’s cafeteria. She is a 20-year Strongsville resident and has three children who attended Strongsville City Schools and are SHS grads..

“The best part of my job is working with students who need that extra help. Watching them achieve the things that they struggle with is so rewarding. Seeing the smiles on their faces when they accomplish something brings tears to my eyes. This validates that I have done my job and I can go home that day knowing that I made a difference in at least one student. That is my goal daily! Building relations with the students I work with is key with the intervention process. I make sure every student I work with feels comfortable with whatever we are working on that day. I like to add a little bit of fun into the intervention, including games, little dances, and even funny faces. We also make time for sharing at the end of our session which they look forward to every day. I love working with all the students, it makes my world complete. Working with such wonderful, caring staff at Muraski makes my job a GREAT one. I have made some amazing friends working in the SCS district. I am so grateful to be an Educational Aide at Muraski,” said Mrs. Oppedisano.

Congratulations to the following Mustang student-athletes who have earned Greater Cleveland Conference “Player of the Month” awards for April:

Madison Rishel (Softball) - Madison broke the school record for triples in a season (7), just 13 games into the season. She is also hitting .590 with a .953 slugging percentage. As a freshman, she has been an extremely effective leader on and off the field, and has contributed defensively in multiple positions throughout the season.

Ben Giera (Lacrosse) - Ben scored 10 goals and recorded 4 assists during the last 4 games in April. 14 points. He also recently signed his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Otterbein University.

Anthony Gentile (Baseball) - In the month of April, Anthony hit .500 (18 for 36) with 13 BB and 6 HBP for a .673 OBP, with 3 doubles, 2 homers, 17 RBI, 13 R, and only 3 strikeouts. Anthony was also 5 for 6 stealing bases and had a .750 slugging percentage. Despite only being a junior, Anthony was elected as a team captain by his teammates.

Congratulations to SHS Girls Basketball coach Dawn Thall for being named “Coach of the Year” by the Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association this past week. This year, her Lady Mustangs team reached the ‘Sweet 16’ in the OHSAA State Tournament, compiling a 19-3 record.

Make plans to support the Strongsville Middle School Track & Field teams on Monday, May 10 by purchasing food from the Barrio and Kona Ice Food Trucks. The food trucks will be in the SMS parking lot on Monday from 3:30pm - 7:30pm and located near Pearl Road for easy and safe access.

Don’t miss the Strongsville Athletic Boosters annual golf outing, with proceeds benefiting the Mustangs athletic program. This year’s event will be held at Bunker Hill Golf Course on Friday, June 11. The day includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast and lunch on the course, and a dinner and auction. Click HERE to register as an individual golfer or as a golf foursome. Attention current fifth graders - don't miss your chance to zipline, swim, fish, and participate in lots of fun activities with your friends at the annual Sixth Grade Camp in the fall! The Sixth Grade Camp will be held at Skyview Ranch in Millersburg, Ohio from Friday, September 10 - Sunday September 12 (students attending the Sixth Grade Camp will be excused from school on Friday, September 10th). Cost per camper is $180.00 and includes transportation to/from Skyview Ranch, meals throughout the weekend, activities and rental fees, drawstring bag, camp t-shirt and hooded sweatshirt. The Arts and Culture Committee of the Strongsville Women’s League would like to thank all 70 children who entered the art contest that ran March 15 – April 15, 2021. We are very proud to announce the contest was very successful and well received, and we would like to thank all the students who entered. The judging panel of Councilman Jim Kaminski, Dare Officer Aaron Plut, and Strongsville Middle School Teacher, Lisa Bluemel met on April 26,, 2021. After careful deliberation, they have determined the following winners.

Category K-1: First Place – Samantha D. Grade 1, Second Place – Katie B. Kindergarten, Third Place – Maria W. Grade 1.

Category 2-3: First Place – Madelynn R. Grade 3, Second Place – Benjamin L. Grade 3, Third Place – Estella G. Grade 3.

Category 4-5: First Place – Allison M. Grade 4, Second Place – Prathula S. Grade 5, Third Place – Dhanvita I. Grade 5.

We had four winners from Saint Joseph & John, two winners from Kinsner, one winner from Saint Ambrose, Muraski and Whitney Elementary. Congratulations all!

The winner’s art work will be displayed at the Strongsville Recreation Center in the lobby, starting Friday, April 30th through May 20, 2021. Each of the nine students won a gift certificate – First Place won $25 to Maggie & Ellie’s Pottery and Art Studio, Second Place won $20 to Target, and Third Place winners won $10 to the Strongsville Spirit Shop. GOH Run Youth running day camps provide an opportunity for young runners and those interested in running and physical activity to learn about the sport. We build confidence and character through team building, games, and activities that get everyone moving. We learn about nutrition, relaxation, and promote wellness. Computer Classes
Cuyahoga County Public Library offers computer classes for beginners to advanced. Classes are currently being held VIRTUALLY using the program Screenleap which requires a web browser and an internet connection. There is no additional software to download. Google Chrome is the recommended browser. A valid email address is required for registration. Registrants will receive an email with a link to join the class at least an hour before the start time. Have you ever thought about recording your own music, making a video, digitizing memories and more? The Strongsville Library is home to both Audio and Video Recording studios that can help you do just that! You must go through an orientation in order to use the spaces. During the COVID-19 pandemic these orientations will be held VIRTUALLY ONLY. We will offer orientations on both rooms, however, only the Video Studio is open during this time. Southwest General Health Talk: Healthy Summer Eating. Tuesday, May 18th / 10:00 a.m.
Join us for this virtual Zoom presentation! It's summer. . . Time to relax, but don’t take a vacation from healthy eating. Join Amy Dunbar, Lead Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from Southwest General Hospital, as she discusses ways to improve summer eating. She will share tips about nutrition and how to buy fresh ingredients and cook them on the grill to ensure healthy eating this summer.
