ATHLETICS SCOREBOARD
BOYS HOCKEY
Lightning Come Back to Tie Cretin-Derham Hall
Senior Forward Caleb Nelson had a hat trick and Senior Forward Jordan Brothers added a goal and an assist as the boys varsity hockey team salvaged a 4-4 tie against Cretin Derham Hall on Tuesday, January 16. After a scoreless first period, Brothers collected a pass from Nelson and scored to put the Lightning up 1-0 at 6:46 of the second. Cretin tied it six minutes later, but with 1:49 to go in the second, Junior Defenseman Max Powers-Brekke rushed the puck from center ice to the Raiders’ goal. His shot rebounded to Nelson, who tapped it in for a 2-1 Eastview lead. But Cretin scored again late in the period to tie the game.
The Raiders scored a power play goal at 4:10 of the third, then scored again at 2:43 to go up 4-2. But Senior Forward Cam Roth threw a stretch pass to Nelson, who caught the puck and fired it into the Raiders’ goal with 1:15 in regulation. With just 31 seconds to go, Senior Forward Billy Downs won an offensive-zone face off, tipping the puck to Nelson, who passed to Brothers at the point. Brothers then rifled a shot toward the goal that Nelson redirected into the net for a 4-4 tie, which held up through overtime. The Lightning resume conference play at Eagan on Saturday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Lightning Beat Eagan to Maintain Second Place in South Suburban Conference
Senior Forward Zach Wooten scored two goals as the Eastview boys varsity hockey team beat Eagan 4-2 on Saturday, January 20 at Eagan. Sophomore Forward Sam Wooten assisted on both of Zach’s goals and added a power-play goal. Senior Forward Billy Downs also had a goal and two assists.
The Lightning went up early in the first period when Zach Wooten scored on an odd-man rush that left him and Eagan’s goalie sprawling on the ice. Eagan answered 1:12 later with an even-strength goal. Downs broke the tie at 6:29 of the second period, assisted by Zach Wooten and Senior Defenseman Abram Johnson. Early in the third period, Eastview went up 3-1 when Sam Wooten picked off an Eagan pass and set up Zach Wooten for his second goal. But Eagan scored two minutes later to cut the lead to 3-2. Eagan had a golden opportunity to tie the game when they took a 5-3 skater advantage with under five minutes to play. But Senior Defensemen Brayden Kaldenbach and Kevin Woehler combined with Downs for an epic kill lasting 1:45. Sam Wooten then scored to clinch the 4-2 final. The Lightning play next on Tuesday, January 23 against Farmington at the Apple Valley Sports Arena at 7:00 p.m.
The JV Boys Hockey Team played against Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday, January 15th. The team had several chances to score but the game remained scoreless after the first 2 periods of play. Ty Young had a great game and the team played hard overall, however, Cretin-Derham Hall got on the board first at the start of the 3rd period while on the power play. The score remained 0 to 1 until 5 minutes left in the 3rd period when Cretin-Derham Hall went ahead 0 to 2. Mason Gillis got Eastview on the board 2 minutes later with an assist from Cole Hille but the JV Boys weren’t able to find the net again. Cretin-Derham Hall got the win 1 to 2. Ty Young faced 38 shots.
On Saturday, the JV Boys played an exciting game against Eagan. In the first period, the shots on goal were close but Eagan got a power play goal with less than 3 minutes left to take the lead. Eagan held the lead in the 2nd period but, with 54 seconds left, Wesley Schoenwetter tied the game with an assist from Liam O’Donnell. The tie didn’t last long as Eagan answered back with 8 seconds of the 2nd period. The 3rd period started with Eagan scoring 2 minutes into the period. Eastview played hard to catch up and fought through a handful of penalties. With 8 minutes left in the 3rd period, Cal Fritche got a short-handed goal to bring Eastview within 1 goal of Eagan. Eastview continued to battle but the game ended with a 2 to 3 win for Eagan. Zach Wakefield was great in the net with 21 blocked shots. Eastview will play Farmington tonight at the Apple Valley Sports Arena. The puck drops at 5pm for JV.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Eastview Girls Varsity Hockey
On Wednesday the Eastview Girls lost another close game to Cretin-Derham Hall 3-2. Jenna Nelvin started the scoring for the Lightning with a power play goal in the first period assisted by Sari Cords and Ella Schaefer. Cretin scored the next two goals putting them up 2-1 in the third period. Erin Hayward was able to tie the game up 2-2 on a goal assisted by Sari Cords with about five minutes left, but Eastview was unable to hold on as Cretin scored the game winning goal with just over two minutes left in the game. Lila Hanson played a strong game in goal with 35 saves on 38 shots.
Thursday the Lightning were able to snap their four game losing streak with a 5-3 win against Shakopee in a game that reminds us all that sports are so much bigger than wins and losses. Shakopee lost their teammate, Senior Mikayla McCarvel, on Tuesday, January 16th to injuries sustained in a car accident on December 26th. The Sabres decided to move ahead and play the game on Thursday in honor of her. Shakopee’s players, coaches, and community showed so much courage all night in many tributes to Mikayla throughout the evening and in the way they played the game. The Eastview players, coaches, and fans carried themselves with class and integrity and represented the Eastview Community well.
Eastview started the scoring in the first period on a goal from Erin Hayward assisted by Sari Cords. The Lightning scored another one in the second period by Sari Cords assisted by Ella Schaefer. In the third period, Sari Cords scored her second goal of the night to put the Lightning up 3-0, but the Sabres scored a couple of goals to make it 3-2. Sari Cords got the hat trick on a goal assisted by Jenna Nelvin followed by a goal from Shakopee. Brielle Clardy was able to finish the scoring with an empty net goal putting Eastview up 5-3. Beth Bigalke was strong in net making 39 or 42 saves.
EASTVIEW VARSITY WRESTLING
Spencer Lee and Pierce Lewis took 2nd, Aiden Enderlein, Landon Odegard and Jack Bauer took 3rd place in a tough Lightning Invite on Saturday, January 20th. Reid George earned 4th, Logan Myers 5th, and Ryan Layeux 6th. The Eastview Wrestling team took 4th out of 14 teams.
