Our Walnut High School Theater Department is ready to showcase its Spring Musical, "Newsies," starting tonight at 7:00 pm!

Based on a true story, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of a ragged band of teenage newspaper sellers who dream of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. After newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer hikes up the prices for his papers charged to the newsies, Jack Kelly rallies his fellow newsboys to protest the change, falling in love with young reporter Katherine along the way. These young newsies from across the city come together and rise up against the exploitation of wealthy publishing tycoons and fight for justice using the only power they have – solidarity.

This entertaining, high-energy musical is not to be missed. Join Jack, Crutchie, Race, Albert, and the dozens of Newsies cast members from the WHS School of the Arts as they seize the day to take on the powerful giants of New York.

State Testing for Week 1 is over! Our Juniors were terrific! Shoutout to all of our parents for raising such amazing kids. Thank you to our testing coordinator and Dean Marta Dibell and ELA Coordinator Rebecca Chai for a great start and smooth transition to the testing season. Thank you guys for all that you do!!

We start our Math portion of state testing TUESDAY, MARCH 21st!

On March 10 & 11, our Walnut High School Dance Team competed in the WCE Nationals in Long Beach. The girls returned to Walnut High School with 4 National Titles (Large Jazz, Large Lyrical, Small Contemporary, and Kick). Our dance team earned their 30th overall national title in program history. Congrats and way to represent!

Congrats to Publications and the 2022 Cayuse staff for earning the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s highest award for high school publications, the Gold Crown!

The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. Student publishing in news, magazine, yearbook or digital (online) formats is all-eligible.

This is a non-profit organization we are working with to gather a database of alumni information that will help improve alumni connection, correspondence, and ways to support Walnut High School. Help Support Walnut Girls Volleyball! Save the date for June 9th!

This golf fundraiser is a great way to help make a difference in our girl's volleyball program.

Proceeds will be used to:

• Purchase new volleyball uniforms
• Upgrade existing equipment
• Cover tournament expenses
• Help with assistant coaches' stipends
• Pay for team meals and much more!

ASB is offering the opportunity to purchase 4 more graduation tickets in the month of March. No form is necessary however we only take cash or check payable to Walnut High School.

Each ticket is $15 and if you purchase the maximum of 4, it would cost $60.

If we have additional tickets we will be offering more in the month of April. Tickets are available to purchase in ASB!

Walnut Mustangs Boys Soccer is searching for a head coach to continue to build the program. Applicants must have the ability to oversee multiple levels and lead a competitive team.

The Academic Design Program (ADP) is a standards-based, integrated approach to learning. Using the Design-Based Learning methodology, Social Science and English are brought together as the students work through real-world problems in search of real-world solutions. Students will engage with the content through creativity and collaboration in order to build a mind-body connection with the material they learn. The theme for this year’s event is STEAM TO THE FUTURE. The 7th Annual Career STEAMposium will take place on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM. This FREE event will take place at Pasadena City College located at 1570 E. Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA.

STEAM pervades every part of our lives and career opportunities in these areas are growing by about 14% per year. In order to be gainfully employed, it is important to have skills that people are willing to pay to gain access to. STEAM professions are the jobs of today and the future. Many high paying jobs in these areas continue to go unfilled because there is a gap between workforce skillsets and job requirements. If we want to close this gap, we need to encourage our future workforce to pursue careers of the future which are in STEAM.

In the Spring of 2024, Walnut High School will be evaluated for accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accreditation shows our school meets high standards for operating a quality program. WASC accreditation is an ongoing cycle, including an initial self-study process, creating a schoolwide plan, and hosting evaluation visits. An accredited school is a statement to the broader community and the stakeholders that it is a trustworthy institution for student learning and committed to ongoing improvement.

It is imperative that we hear from all stakeholders, teachers, students, parents, community members, support, and district staff, as we set improvement goals through this reflective process. To reach that goal, we have created an electronic parent survey. Please take the time to complete the survey below and assist us in setting plans to make WHS the best school possible.

Students will be subject to disciplinary action when a student has been absent from class without a valid excuse. All absences must be cleared within one (1) school day after the last date of absence. The preferred method for clearing absences is via parent/guardian phone calls to the attendance office.

Parents must call the attendance office the day their student is absent as early as possible or within two school days of an absence, at the latest. Messages may also be left. Please clearly state the student's first and last name, guardian name, dates or class periods absent, and reason for the absence.

A reminder email and robocall are sent to the parent on the day of the absence. If uncleared, the office will make a courtesy call the following day.

When parents do not call within the two school days, the absences are counted as truant and referred to the GLC. We will not accept late phone calls.

Class of 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 students should have received an email from their GLC via Sign Up Genius with a link to select their summer registration appointment.

Parents, please coordinate with your student your preferred date and time! Preferably, sibling appointments should be selected on the same day. Sibling appointments will not be made for you.

Registration appointments will be held from July 5 - July 28.

IMPORTANT: Student schedules will be created in June based on their course request selections. There is no benefit or drawback to selecting the first summer or last appointments; please set the appointment time that best fits your schedule. Summer appointments are to review schedules, check for scheduling mistakes, and to ensure that your student is taking the most appropriate courses for their grade level and post-secondary plans. Teacher change requests will not be honored.

Due to many problems and safety issues we DO NOT allow student lunches to be delivered anywhere on campus.

Food, drinks or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is strictly prohibited.

Outside Food Delivery Services such as UBER Eats/Door Dash is strictly prohibited. Food will be confiscated if deliveries are dropped off.

We understand the importance of student nutrition but we encourage students to either use the free lunch at school or bring their lunch from home.

During summer registration, students and their guardians watched the rules and expectations video for the upcoming school year. If you did not have a chance to watch it, please take a minute to view the video to help you be successful this year!

Parents: One thing you will notice this year are tardy or cell phone detention automated emails. If your child was issued a detention for excessive tardies or a cell phone violation, you will get an email with information on the detention they need to serve.

Students must attend every class, every day, and be on time. In order to receive daily credit, students are to bring all necessary materials to class. Students will not be excused from class to get materials. Homework and class assignments are to be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability. Only behaviors befitting the learning environment are acceptable. Students are to comply with all reasonable requests of any staff member. Dress code will be enforced.
