Now more than ever, the phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" could not be more true. There isn't a member of our community that hasn't been touched by the pandemic and its wide-ranging effects. That is true for the Eastview Community Foundation as well. Our fundraising efforts have been limited, if not wholly eliminated, but the work we do has continued, thanks to the generous individuals and businesses who support EVCF.

Take the Minnesota Safe Learning Survey

The University of Minnesota and Minnesota Department of Education are inviting students in grades 6-12, families and educators to share their experiences with school over the past year. The Minnesota Safe Learning Survey, which was also administered in February and May 2021, is being given this last time to provide a picture of the landscape in education across Minnesota. Districts will receive local information to compare with statewide data. The survey closes November 24. Take the Minnesota Safe Learning Survey.

EVHS Book Drive

It’s not the typical book drive…we are experiencing a shortage in a number of library and textbook titles that were checked out during distance learning. We need your help! Please encourage your students to check their desks, rooms and under the bed! We know that circumstances did not make it easy to return school books last year. Students can check what books they may be missing with these directions or they may stop by the Learning Commons for a printed report. Middle school books can also be returned to EVHS and we will transfer them back to the appropriate schools. Thank you for your assistance in collecting our resources for other learners.

The Winter I session begins on Monday, November 22 and ends on Friday, December 17
Each class is worth the equivalent of .75 credit (equal to one quarter course during the school year)
Students are required to attend class on each of the four Mondays of the session (2:45-4:00pm)
More than one absence will result in removal from the course (can start again the next session)
Teachers will provide supported work sessions on Tuesdays/Thursdays
Attendance on Tuesdays/Thursdays will be determined by the teacher based on your progress/grade
Students may attend supported WIN Time sessions on Wednesdays for additional support if needed
Students must engage in all course work and earn at least 60% in order to earn credit

Eastview School Store Now Open

Need some new Eastview gear? The Eastview Online Apparel Store is now open! You can choose from a wide variety of sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and mittens with additional new items arriving in the upcoming weeks. All items that are purchased through our online store are usually available for pick within 48 hours at the west door security desk between the hours of 7:40-3:30.

Beginning December 1st, the Eastview School store will also be open for in person visits on Wednesdays from 7:00-7:30 and during lunch. Stop down at the east end of the commons during those times to check out everything we have to offer.

WIN Time on Wednesdays

We have a new opportunity for student academic support on Wednesday afternoons from 2:45pm – 4:15pm in the Learning Commons. Students can come and do schoolwork in a supported, supervised setting. We will have faculty/staff support along with upperclass peer tutors (especially skilled in Math) available each Wednesday.

Students will identify their priorities (“What I Need” or “What’s Important Now”), create a plan for the most efficient use of their time, celebrate their accomplishments, and leave with a plan for continued success. Students do not need to sign up in advance for WIN Time. We do ask that students plan to be there for the start at 2:45pm so they can benefit from the full support.

Educational Benefits Program (formerly Free and Reduced-Price Meals) Application

Students in District 196 will be provided breakfast and lunch at no cost during the 2021-22 school year due to a grant provided by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. All families are still encouraged to complete an Educational Benefits Application, formerly the free and reduced-price meals application. Upon approval, these benefits are extended to Activities/Athletics fees and more. A new application must be submitted each year.

Health & Safety

Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools

State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.

Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.

Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.

Review and Update Emergency Information

If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.

All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.

College Financial Aid information

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available. Please go to www.fafsa.gov to complete this application. Information to assist in completing the application are also available on the FAFSA website. All seniors attending ANY type of post-secondary institution should complete the FAFSA.

New: Upcoming College and University Visits

Students should stop by the Counseling Office and get a pass to attend the college/university/military Rep Visit prior to the right visit. These university/college or military visits are small group meetings typically lasting 20-30 minutes. These admission reps are often times the same people that review college applications, so it's a great connection for students.

EVGB Run With The Lightning

Spend the evening with the Eastview Lightning Girls Basketball team!

Who: Girls in Grades K through 6

Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Shakopee High School 2-1 11/13/21

A lively crowd turned out to see the Lightning earn their first win of the year, an entertaining 2-1 victory over Shakopee. The Lightning struck first at 2:46 of the opening period. Junior Lauren Speegle found senior Betsy Bjerke in the neutral zone and Bjerke beat a Sabers defender into the Shakopee end. As she drove the net, Bjerke ripped a shot past another defender and the Sabers goalie to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Shakopee tied the score at 15:23 of the first and the shots were 9-14.

The Lightning took the lead for good at 13:23 of the second. After drawing a penalty, and before the power play started, senior Avery Chesek took the puck deep in the Sabers’ zone and fed senior Dani Farrington at the blue line. Farrington fired a shot at the net and junior Meghan Keating potted the rebound to make it 2-1. The Lightning defense and senior goaltender Angie Lombardi were strong throughout the game and never more so than in killing a 3 on 5 power play during the second frame. After 2, the shots were 23-27.

The Lightning dominated the third, outshooting the Sabers 13 to 2, but they could not add to their lead. The pressure, however, kept the Sabers from threatening and the Lightning secured the victory. The shots ended 35-29.

The win moved the Lightning to 1-0-1. Next up, Thursday November 18 vs. Elk River at AVSA. Game time 7:00.

Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey ties South Saint Paul High School 2-2 - 11/11/21

The first game of the 2021-22 season was an energetic affair as the two ranked foes battled to a 2-2 tie. The first period set the tone for what proved to be a fast-paced match. The score after one was 0-0 and the shots on goal were 13-11 in favor of the Lightning.

South St. Paul scored first, at 12:24 of the second, and threatened to inflict more damage with 3 power plays, but the Lightning defense and senior goaltender Angie Lombardi stood strong and killed all the penalties. After two, the score was 0-1 in favor of the Packers and the shots were 28-25.

The Lightning struck twice in the third. At 5:17, sophomore Erin Hayward poked the puck from a Packers forward near the Lightning blue line. Hayward corralled the loose puck and hit senior Avery Chesek near center ice. Chesek drove to the Packers’ net and found an opening glove side, upper corner to tie the score. At 12:02, the Lightning took the lead. Junior Jessica Wilhelm hit Chesek with a pass near center ice that sent Chesek and Hayward on a two on one. Chesek placed a perfect pass to Hayward who buried her first varsity goal in the far corner for a 2-1 Lightning lead. The Packers used some puck luck, getting an unfortunate carom off a skate, to tie the score at 14:05. After three, the score was 2-2 and the shots were 39-33.

The Lightning had a few great chances in the overtime, but the Packers goalie made some incredible saves to keep the score tied. Lombardi and the defense kept the Packers off the board, too, and the game ended in a draw. The final shots were 45-37.

JV SPORTS

Eastview High School Girls Junior Varsity Hockey falls to Shakopee High School 3-1 - 11/13/21

The lightning JV hockey team played the Shakopee Sabers for their conference opener this past Saturday at AVSA. The Sabers came out on top with a 3-1 victory.

The lightning started the scoring at :43 seconds of the 1st period when #3 Ella Schaefer scored her 1st career JV goal. The assists on the goal went to #5 E. Patterson and #23 Carly Johnson. Shakopee got on the scoreboard with a PP goal at 5:13 of the period to tie the game at 1-1. The 1st period ended in a 1-1 tie. The 1st period SOG totals were Eastview 7, Shakopee 9.

Shakopee took a 2-1 lead at 7:15 of the 2nd period. The lightning had some great scoring chances with Erin Hayward ringing one off the pipe in the 2nd period. The period ended with Shakopee leading 2-1. The 2nd period SOG totals were Eastview 6 Shakopee 10.

Shakopee scored at :14 of the 3rd period to take a 3-1 lead. Lila Hanson had a great save on a breakaway at 5:20 of the 3rd. There was no more scoring in the period. The Sabers came out on top 3-1.

It was a well played game by both teams. The 3rd period SOG totals were Eastview 8 Shakopee 13.

The lightning finished the game with 21 SOG. Shakopee has 32 SOG.

The lightning are back in action again at AVSA this Thursday vs. Elk River/Zimmerman. Game time is 5:00 p.m. GO LIGHTNING!

New: East African Club (EAC) Info Meeting

On Wednesday, Nov 17th, the East African Club is having an informational meeting in C250 at 2:45. All are welcome.

EAC is a group where people can come together to celebrate, embrace and expand their knowledge on East African history and culture. Our goal is to provide social support, and also create a safe place to talk and share personal experiences. We will aim to discuss leadership, social issues, tradition and culture. We welcome all Eastview High School students who are interested in learning more about the history, traditions and customs of East Africa.

Eastview Performing Arts Department is proud to announce the winter musical, Urinetown!

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms.
