Pause & Think Online
Did you know ... ?
- Not everything that is posted online is true?
- Anyone can post anything on the internet ... even if it's a lie!
- Photos and videos can be changed digitally to make it look real ... even if it's not.
- Some pages on the internet are a place to post opinions ( an opinion is not always true)
You need to learn how to tell the fake information from the real information online ...
PAUSE & THINK!
Examples
Here are some pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. Do you believe that all of these pictures are real? If not, which do you think have been digitally altered (changed using computer programs)?
(You can click on them to zoom in!)
When you are reading stories on the internet, ask yourself ...
- Does it make sense? Is it believable?
- Who wrote it? Is that person an educated expert?
- Do other believable online stories agree with this one?
Which of the following "news" stories look fake? Use the questions above to decide.
(You can click on them to zoom in!)
The first and the third articles above are fake ... the third was actually posted on several different news sites before it was discovered as fake news AND you can still find that story on the internet! Do you see how real these webpages appear to be? Do you understand how it would be easy to be tricked into believing them?
