Construction trades program helping students build foundation for future
Construction trades is a relatively new addition to Davison High School's line up of Career Technical Education (CTE) programs and it's one that is quickly building.
"We have had 99% engagement and excitement in every class today doing these," Instructional Aide Mr. Derek DeWitt said about the class's most recent assignment of building project walls.
Teacher Mr. Zac Schlaud took over the program this year. Recently students were taught how to read a measuring tape, and the lesson was turned it into a contest where students had to correctly write down the measurements on the board. The first students who were able to complete the task correctly in each class were placed in the 2024 Tape Finals and, ultimately, squared off against each other for the title of champion. That honor, by the way, went to student Reese Maul.
"It's something I came up with to get the students more engaged in the curriculum," he said. "I'm planning on adding more competitions and fun games to keep them engaged moving forward."
And there will be plenty of opportunities as DeWitt plans to teach students about every aspect of construction, including wiring, plumbing, insulating, drywalling, painting, trim, damage and repair work and drywall texture techniques.
"We are going to do every aspect of construction with them," DeWitt said.
Shout out to our School Resource Officers!
Yesterday was School Resource Officer Day and we want to take a few minutes to thank two of the best: Davison Township Police Officer Kevin Roberts and Davison City Police Officer Bryan Illig. Officer Roberts is based on the Davison High School/Alternative Education campus and Officer Illig is assigned to Davison Middle School/Hahn Intermediate. We appreciate everything that these officers do to build relationships with and support our kids and help maintain a safe and secure environment for students and staff.
Talented singers from DMS, DHS perform well at Solo and Ensemble
DHS and DMS choir students represented Davison schools very well at Solo and Ensemble on February 3! All 10 high school events received first division ratings, including four perfect scores. All 15 middle school events received first and second division ratings, including two perfect scores.
Mr. Garth Starr, Davison High School Vocal Music Teacher and Miss Michelle Wilson, Davison Middle School Vocal Music Teacher, said they are so proud of these students who put in extra work to prepare for this competition!
DHS/DAE names February Students of the Month
Congratulations to the following students selected as Students of the Month at Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education for the month of February.
Nominated by: Mrs. Erica Niemi
Aymie personifies what a Davison High School student should strive to be. She is kind to others, participates daily in class discussions, and has a positive attitude. I look forward to seeing Aymie in class each day!
9th: Zaia Carradine
Nominated by: Mr. James Wilcox
Zaia Carradine exemplifies everything that I want in a student. She is respectful, kind and is a thorough, hard worker. Often, freshman that take Algebra 1 have many struggles and Zaia has embraced those struggles and used her resources to continuously earn an A throughout the entire first semester. I wish I had 30 of her in the same class."
10th: Adison Hawley
Nominated by: Mrs. Lauren Crongeyer
Adison is a well-rounded student who works so hard in and outside of school! She is always focused during class and works so well with her classmates. She asks questions and does not give up until she understands the material. More importantly, I constantly hear students in other classes talk about how nice Adison is ALL THE TIME. Adison is a great role model at DHS!
11th: Jace Bishop
Nominated by: Mrs. Megan Gieselman
Jace is always positive and works hard to do well in class. He is kind and welcoming and always has a smile on his face when I see him. He is courteous and always willing to help out teachers or classmates. I am thankful I get to have Jace as a student!
12th: Maddie Haldy
Nominated by: Mrs. Katie Davis
As a student, Maddie has always strived to succeed and do her best work. She works well with other students and is helpful and kind. She is also an active member of the National Honor Society, and I can always count on her to step up and help others in various service projects. Many times, Maddie has been one of the only students to volunteer for different needs. When she sees a need, she does her best to help and support. She is a perfect example of what the student of the month exemplifies!
DAE: Kaelyn Bernard
Nominated by: Mr. Stephen Maule and Mr. Christopher Friske
Mr. Maule said that Kaelyn is what I call a true ROCK STAR, she truly has adapted well to the ABC's (Attendance, Behavior, Credits) culture at DAE since coming over from DHS. She is a student that flies under the radar and comes to school regularly, behaves well and excels in the classroom. Mr. Friske said that Kaelyn is a model student who exemplifies what it means to be a Davison Cardinal. She is attentive and respectful not only in the classroom but also in the entire building. Kaelyn can seldom be seen without a warming smile on her face and her politeness is a shining beacon at DAE that is much appreciated!
