Special Edition: Swann Lion Times
An important midweek update from your Lion Pride!
Student Handbook
Families and students can access the Swann Student Handbook and the GCS Handbook on our website: https://www.gcsnc.com/domain/16465
Please review the handbooks with your students so that everyone is aware of school and district rules and policies. We have highlighted a few below to help us start the year on the right foot!
Car Rider Lines
The car rider line is behind the school. All cars turn into the circle lot via Yanceyville Street, proceed to the back of the building, let out their students, and complete the circle to exit onto Yanceyville Street.
FOR SAFETY REASONS, CAR RIDERS MAY NOT BE DROPPED OFF AT ANY OTHER LOCATION ON CAMPUS.
Students arriving by car will enter the building using the auditorium entrance. Students must report directly to their entrance. Do not linger outside the school or enter any other buildings before entering through the scanners at the car rider entrance.
Early Pick Up
Only adults authorized in PowerSchool may pick up a student early from school. You can use School Mint to review your student’s authorized pick-up adults. All adults checking a student out of school must show a photo ID and sign the student out in the front office. Early dismissal ends at 3:45. After 3:45, pick-up must occur using the car rider line. Students are dismissed at 4:20.
Dress Code
Please view the complete dress code in the Handbook. We want to highlight the head covering policy:
Hats and hoods may not be worn in the hallways. Hats and hoods are allowed in the cafeteria and outside. In the classroom, whether students may wear hats and hoods is left to teacher discretion
No paisley print bandanas or scarves
No durags or bonnets
Outside Food and Food Deliveries
Students are not permitted to receive outside food deliveries from parents, friends, or professional delivery services. If a student forgets their lunch, they can receive a free meal in the cafeteria. This rule does not apply to home assembled lunch boxes.
If a food delivery is made, the front office will hold it for the student to collect at the end of the day.
Student OneCards
All students are issued a new OneCard at the beginning of the year. This card must be scanned on entry each day and worn at all times. The replacement cost for lost or broken OneCards is $5.00. Please help reinforce this expectation with your students.

Evolv Scanners
This year, all middle schools in Guilford County are using Evolv scanners to increase safety on our campuses. All students and guests will pass through the scanners before entering the building. Please consider the following as you and your student prepare for school.
- Metal items will alert the scanners and trigger a search. Students can pass these items around the scanner to avoid the alert. If the item can be left at home or if there is a non-metal alternative, please consider those options. It will greatly speed up the process.
- binders with metal rings
- metal water bottles
- metal eye glass cases
- instrument cases
- bats
- tablets and computers
- If the scanner alerts, the student's bag and/or pockets will be searched and the student re-scanned before they are allowed to enter the building.
- There will be delays in the beginning as everyone gets used to the system. Thank you for your patience!
