Reading, Reading, Reading!
As you know, the teaching of reading is at the very top of our school's agenda. Ensuring children have the tools to unlock the world around them is a vital skill. Please ensure your child/ren read for at least 20 minutes everyday. We ensure all children go home with books appropriate for the stage of their reading ability (decoding and comprehension) in order to maximise their ability to access reading independently, with some challenge.
Thank you to everyone who attended the English Homework and Reading workshop earlier this week, and thank you to Ms Neate for hosting.

It has come to my attention that some children are not coming into school in the correct uniform. Whilst we are not precious about the branding, the correct school colours must be worn. Blue, white, grey and black are the school unform colours. This includes shoes or smart trainers. Football boots are not appropriate for all day wearing, and is not school uniform.
Please remember to email the school with your password if you need to make a last minute change to the collection arrangements for your child/ren. This includes for carry on cafe!
This week I was invited to 10 Downing Street in celebration of worked achieved for black carribean pupil achievement. I am very much looking forward to sharing my experinece with the children at my whole school assesmbly next week, linking this with our new value 'Self-belief'.
Today we say 'bon voyage' to Ms Wilden, our year 6 Class Teacher and Maths Subject Leader, as she sets off for a period of maternity leave. We all thank her for all her hard work and support for yr6 children past and present, and wish her well on this new chapter.
At Bonneville black history doesn't end when October does, it's woven throughout our curriculum!

Christmas Box Appeal
Everyone loves to receive a present at Christmas but for many vulnerable children and families in Southeast Europe Christmas serves as a reminder of their isolation and poverty. This year Bonneville Primary school has decided to support a Christmas box appeal run by House of Opportunity (houseofopportunity.org), to try and help some of the poorest people in Europe to have a more joyful Christmas.
Nearly 8,000 Christmas boxes for men, women and children, filled with small toys, sweets, hats and scarves, toiletries and other goodies were donated through this organisation last year. These were distributed to abandoned children living in state care, poor rural schools and kindergartens, women’s refuges, isolated elderly people, Ukrainian refugees and Roma children in Bulgaria, spreading a little joy to those living in very difficult circumstances.
Will you help us to show those living with so little that we are thinking of them? Participating with the project is easy - leaflets containing guidance and instructions will be coming home with your child early next week but in the mean time if you would like to find more information and start preparing your shoe box please look at christmasbox.org.
The deadline for bringing completed boxes into school is the end of day on Monday 13th November ready for collection Tuesday morning by the company.

Reading at Bonneville
Early Reading Development
At Bonneville we use the essential letters and sounds program for reading. In EYFS and KS1, children do 20 minutes of phonics everyday. Ask your child what sound they are currently learning?
We enourage children to continue applying their phonics learning to support their spelling in KS2, particularly for those tricky words. You are never too old to use phonics!
At Bonneville we teach reading discreetly, this means it is taught as a single subject. Each day we have a different focus.
On Mondays it is ‘Text and Talk,’ the children are introduced to their new text for the week. Children are exposed to a variety of different text types and genres. The children hear the text being read to them and identify new vocabulary and meaning of words.
On Tuesday, the children become ‘Word Detectives’. The children answer retrieval questions. This is where they can find the answer in the text. Children use their skimming and scanning skills to find their answers.
On Wednesday, children use their ‘Thinking Caps’. They answer a variety of inference questions. They are taught the skills that help them use your prior knowledge and textual information to draw conclusions, make critical judgments, and form interpretations of a text.
Thursday are our ‘Building Blocks’ lesson. This is where children look at the grammar and structures of the text they have been reading.
On Fridays, children answer opinion questions. We call this our ‘Points of View’ lessons. Children are encouraged to express their opinions and make links to the text and their own experiences in the world.
The children revisit the text daily reading it aloud, independently and with their peers.

Homework
Please help support your child with their spellings by looking at the spelling rules, sounds and patterns in each word. Practicing spellings daily (or as much as possible) will help your children to learn and remember each word.
In KS1, children will need to choose five spelling words to put into sentences.
In KS2, children will need to write a sentence for each word, using neat, joined handwriting.
This will give the children the opportunity to understand the meaning of each word, put the word into context and allow them to practice their handwriting.
All spelling books must be given the Class Teacher every Wednesday. This will ensure that your teacher has enough time to get the new spellings stuck in. Children will be doing a weekly spelling test in the back of their homework books so you will be able to see how well they are doing.

What geography word of the week has your child been learning?
Year 1- present Year 4- lifetime/ timescales
Year 2- National Year 5- tribe
Year 3- cultivate Year 6- origin/ district
Please rienforce the learning by asking them what it means.

Attendance
Central to raising standards in all schools and ensuring all pupils can fulfil their potential, is the need for children to attend school regularly to benefit from their education.
There is a strong link between good learning, high achievement, rapid progress and developing good social skills with excellent attendance.
We want to take this opportunity to outline our expectations for school attendance this academic year.
If your child arrives at school from 9.01am they will be marked as LATE, if they arrive after 9.30am they will be classed as “late after the register is closed” and their attendance is classed as absent for the morning session. As the registers would have already been returned to the Department for Education.
Regular poor punctuality can also have a negative effect on your child’s attendance as well as their academic learning. Being 6 minutes late each day equals 30 minutes of missed learning every week.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, we will need to share our concerns with the Local Authority Education Welfare Officer at Lambeth Council.

FAB- Please get involved, more hands make light work!
FAB stands for Friends Association Bonneville.
Many, many parents are involved in enabling fundraising for our school. Thanks again to the FAB Office Team, for galvanising the community and keeping everyone updated through their wonderful Newsletters.
It is great to see new faces getting involved. A donation of 1 hour per term (that’s only 3 hours per year), of your time, is all that we ask. Whether it be class rep, planning/hosting an event or standing on a stall. Some parents very generously agree to host an event like our amazing wreath making workshop, or the gathering of donations for our incredible raffles. We always need more help and support. Every parent is a member of FAB. I ask that everyone gets involved.

Raising a Concern
It is important to us that any concerns or questions you may have are dealt with as efficiently as possible. The structure we have in place is designed to do just that.
The structure
1) Your first port of call is -Your child’s class teacher
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
2) You may contact the leader of your child’s phase (see below)
This includes issues regarding communication and organisation
(email via the admin team to request a meeting)
Should you be dissatisfied with the handling or outcome...
3) You may raise your concerns with Ms Parker
(email via the admin team to request a meeting outlining the nature for the purpose of the meeting)
Leaders are required to share items (as appropriate) with Ms Parker on a weekly basis, even if the matter is being handled by them.
We request that you do not field your concerns to FAB but instead work directly with the school staff as outlined above.
