Middle School Program of Studies
Now that the second semester has begun, it is important to review the promotion policy for middle schoolers. The counseling department will present promotion policy expectation to students in the near future.
Except as provided in Rule 5131.33, in order for a sixth, seventh, or eighth grader to be promoted, the student must:
- Pass Language Arts/Reading; and
- Pass Mathematics; and
- Meet one of the following:
- Pass Science and Social Studies and at least one Related Arts course; or
- Pass Science and at least two Related Arts classes; or
- Pass Social Studies and at least two Related Arts classes.
Students failing a required core subject during the school year may attend summer school to achieve a passing grade.
Students who fail core subjects are encouraged to take classes in the summer school program. A maximum of two make-up credits may be taken in summer school. For a student to be eligible to take a course for make-up in summer school, a student must be enrolled until March 1 for a year-long course and must be enrolled for at least nine weeks for a semester course. Specific information about class offerings and summer school location, along with additional requirements, will be available from the school counseling department in June.

Important i-Ready Parent Update!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) administered i-Ready diagnostic assessments to students this month in both reading and mathematics. Students who took i-Ready assessments include the following.
- Students in Grades 1-8 participated in both a reading and math assessment.
- High school students enrolled in Algebra I or Foundations of Algebra this year completed the math assessment.
- High school students taking English I this year completed the reading assessment.
Family reports are available digitally in the student’s i-Ready portal. To access the report, your child will need to log into their CCPS Office 365 account, go to Clever, and then click on the i-Ready icon. Parents can also assist their child with logging into Office 365. For more details on how to do this, see the attachment labeled “Accessing the i-Ready Student Portal.” The attachment also provides directions on how to get to your child's report within the i-Ready portal.
The code for accessing i-Ready family reports for the 2023-2024 school year is MRBKQ8. This code is for all students in all schools. Please contact your child’s teacher to request a paper version of the family report. Additional parent resources including a video about i-Ready are posted online here. CCPS has also posted i-Ready resources on the i-Ready page of the website.
From the Library's Circulation Desk.................................
From the Library: Winter is a great time to kick back with something fresh to read. Currently we have some football books on display in honor of the upcoming Superbowl. And students can slip in a vote for the team they think will win. Lots of new reads on display as well, including such award winners as The Mona Lisa Vanishes, Mexikid: a graphic memoir, and Simon Sort of Says.
And remember, we are continuing to accept gently used middle school books for our New2U summer reading book exchange.
Tech Reminder: Student laptops will charge better when they are completely powered down.
