Trident Leads
Term 2 Week 3 - May 20th 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te whanau,
This week we have seen winter sports really take off with so many teams across the codes taking part in training, tournaments and matches. It was good to see the enthusiasm and passion our sports students express but also to witness the respectful culture that they generate on the field and court. The work that our coaches do in instilling this value of respect for themselves, the team, the game and their opponents is perhaps the most significant learning they receive through their co-curricular endeavours. Thank you to the coaches, the managers, the drivers and the whanau who come to support our students in this vital aspect of personal growth and excellence.
BOT Elections
Soon we will be sending out information about the BOT elections for parents / whanau who might like to stand for a position on the school board. The work of the board is governance; setting in place the strategic direction of the school and maintaining the policies, finances and procedures to ensure its realisation. We have wonderful parent representatives on the board who give their time, energy and passion - but some are now at the stage where their students are moving on and it is time for them to pass the baton. If you think that you would like an opportunity to support the development and governance of your child’s education and think the Board would be a good fit for you, you are welcome to come along to our next BOT meeting on Thursday 16th June, or contact me and I can put you in touch with a parent rep.
Pink Shirt Day
Many thanks to the staff and students who took part in Pink Shirt Day today, to raise awareness of bullying and support an anti-bullying stance. It is a great opportunity to talk to young adults about how their behaviour has an impact on other people and also how to help and support the more vulnerable in our community. Bullying negatively impacts everyone involved and can have serious immediate, short and long-term physical, social, emotional and psychological impacts. For instance, a student being bullied at school may withdraw from socialising with other students, reducing their sense of belonging and connectedness. Serious experiences of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem can result from bullying, all of which can contribute to a person’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships. Bullying can also impact on students’ academic achievement and learning. The Education Hub has a great resource on bullying and how to identify if it is happening, and support those who have experienced it; it also deals with myths and common misconceptions about the topic.
Our students' creative and enthusiastic response to the day was a great indicator of their adherence to the core values of the school and Trident is committed to a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all of our students.
Te Ake Motuhake Camp
This afternoon some of our Year Nine young leaders returned from a noho at the Christian Camp in Ohope where they worked with our Year Twelve students to develop leadership skills and enjoy the challenges of working as a group to build self-efficacy. The event is the first of a series of initiatives to develop our junior leaders and was organised and led by Jeff Greenwood and Amy Wildash from our SMLT. Huge thanks also to the Year Twelves who gave up their time to mentor and support the junior students.
Covid-19
With Omicron still circling in our community, please note the following -
We are maintaining good health practices to continue to limit the spread of the pandemic in the school. These practices include -
All teachers and visitors to the school wear masks
Students are encouraged to wear a mask and masks are provided for them
Students are required to wear masks on school transport
Hand sanitiser is provided for use on entry and exit to all classrooms
Classrooms are ventilated
We encourage students to practice good hygiene when coughing / sneezing and using the bathroom
What can whanau do to help Trident to maintain a healthy school environment and keep students learning?
Encourage students to bring and wear a mask at school
Keep students with any symptoms at home
Inform the school office ( or whanau ako teacher) if your young adult is self-isolating as a household contact or if they get Covid
If self-isolating make sure your young adult has access to their google classrooms and maintains their study
Contact the whanau ako teacher for problems with access to learning resources on Google classroom
Many thanks for all that you do to support our kura.
We wish you a rejuvenating weekend with whanau.
Nga mihi nui,
Adrienne Scott-Jones

ALUMNI SUCCESS STORIES
TAHLIAH TEMPLE - TOP SCHOLAR
At Trident we like to follow and celebrate the success of our alumni as they journey through study and careers after they leave school. It is always an honour to hear about, and from former students so we were very pleased to hear about Tahliah Temple's academic success at University.
Tahliah has recently been recognised as one of the top 15% scholars in all academic disciplines. She is also honoured to be a part of the 1% of scholars at the University of Waikato. As a result of this effort she has been invited to join the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Golden Key International Honour Society is the world's largest collegiate honour society for graduate and undergraduate students, and has strong relationships with over 400 universities around the world. Golden Key is built on the pillars of academics, leadership, and service, and our chapters are committed to implementing service projects and leadership development for all students on their campus. Members qualify when they are at the top 15% of their class, and are given access to a wide range of rewards, scholarships, travel and study abroad opportunities, and more.
"I would just like to acknowledge Trident as I gained many opportunities from there. I was nurtured and influenced by some of the best teachers who have believed in me since day one Mrs Robb, Matua Mike, Mrs Thompson, Ms Coffey etc. I will continue to strive towards success so thank you very much!"
We wish Tahliah all the very best and congratulate her on her ongoing academic success. The future is a bright one for Tahliah!

On Tuesday we were lucky to enjoy an incredible poetry slam workshop with acclaimed South-Auckland based poet and performer Eric Soakai. Soakai is a former National Slam Poetry Champion who believes that, “You read to understand the world; you write to change it.” Eric encouraged students to use their own stories, experiences, and passions to craft powerful work for the page and the stage.
Thank you Eric!
MOTO X ELECTIVE
A great break in the weather saw the Moto X elective group have a great ride on Thursday. How neat are their new team shirts! Neko, Levi and Jerry designed and printed them, well done team!!
GIRLS FOOTBALL
On Wednesday Trident 2nd XI played WHS 2nd XI.
Another great local derby game. Both teams came out firing, within the first few minutes left winger Vita Pilcher put a goal away in the back of the net. A slight sigh of relief as Trident led 1-0 after 3 minutes. Shortly after WHS got a run away ball, heading straight for goalkeeper Loren Heaslip, who made an exceptional 1 v 1 save. The game went back and forth with Trident dominating predominantly in the first half, corner after corner and unlucky not to get a successful shot at goal. The WHS defence was working hard and finally Trident's striker Ava Milne got a through ball from sweeper Ashlee Jennings and saw a powerful shot on goal successful. Trident was up 2-0 at half time. The second half grew dark and gloomy as the clouds came in. Numerous shots upon goal from both teams. Many goals were saved by Leona Harley as goalkeeper in the second half. Runaway opportunities from Hazel Denby, Claudia Evans and Taylor Growden were unfortunately saved and deflected by the WHS defensive players. Late in the half WHS managed a lucky shot at goal that was first saved by the keeper but through the hustle and bustle, the ball ended up in the net. Pushing hard through the minutes with only less than 5 minutes to go WHS again scored the ball and fortunately for them executed their second goal for the season. With the final whistle blown, the girls left the field with smiles on their faces and were already looking forward to next week's match.
Score: 2-2
Player of the day: Ashlee Jennings and Vita Pilcher
BOP IRB LONGHAUL
Last weekend Ōpōtiki SLSC entered two teams into this competition and Georgia Hurunui was part of the Mixed Team that won their section.
Kicking off from Ohope Beach, there were 18 teams from Eastern, Northern and Waikato Regions. The course saw teams racing to Pikowai, Pukehina, Papamoa, Omanu and finishing at Mt Maunganui main beach. Each stage saw the teams stop and complete various physical and mental tasks to gain points on the way.
We dare say there were some very sore, stiff bodies recuperating after this, but a huge congratulations to Georgia!

At Orange Framework it is not mandatory for students to wear masks in class, however it is a good method to stay healthy.

SCHOOLDOCS
Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
We invite you to visit the site at https://trident.schooldocs.co.nz (note that there's no "www."). Our username is "trident" and password "courage".
