Veterans Day Drive-Through Parade at Cahaba
Cahaba celebrated Veterans Day with its 3rd Annual Drive-Through Parade. Students lined the street, dressed in patriotic colors, waving flags, and holding signs of appreciation for our Veterans. Our SHINE students performed a patriotic ensemble standing on the historic porch. Parents and community members gathered in the square under the shadow of the large United States flag. Everyone waved in appreciation as the Veterans drove by in cars, jeeps, and motorcycles. At the end of the parade, PTO members presented gifts to our honored guests to personally thank them for their service. It was a great morning to celebrate our country and those who keep it free.
Veterans Day Celebration at Magnolia
Under the direction of Mrs. Amy Cane, senior counselor at HTHS and proud member of the Trussville Veterans' Committee, Magnolia Elementary students joined students across Trussville City Schools in creating Veterans Day cards which Mrs. Cane presented to veterans attending the National Veterans Day Awards Dinner in Birmingham. According to Mrs. Cane, there were 1,262 cards from all TCS schools! As Magnolia students created their cards, Magnolia family members, Mrs. Becky McCollum and Ms. Michelle Dawson, spoke to students about their loved ones who are veterans. Mrs. Becky McCollum's husband is Staff Sergeant Ray McCollum 1st Platoon, Platoon Sergeant, 4th CEB Delta Company of the United States Marine Corps. Ms. Michelle Dawson's son is Sergeant Myles Dawson, HHC 1-167th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army. In addition, special thanks to Magnolia Elementary PTO members, Laurie Lowery, Vickie Aldridge, and Hilary Thompson who created a beautiful Veterans Day backdrop for photographs to be taken throughout the day as well as during the Veterans Day reception following the 4th and 5th grade choir performance led by Mr. Danny Moore, Magnolia music teacher.
Under the direction of Mr. Danny Moore, Magnolia Elementary Music Teacher, the 4th and 5th grade Magnolia choirs presented a tribute to veterans in their Veterans Day Choir Concert. Included in the program was Mr. Ed Moore, skilled musician and uncle of Mr. Moore, who performed a moving guitar rendition of "God Bless America." Mrs. Amy Cane, HTHS Counselor and member of the Trussville Veterans' Committee spoke about her time serving in the military and what it means to be a veteran. According to Mrs. Cane, "Being a veteran makes you think more of others than yourself." Performing a beautiful arrangement of "Taps" was guest trumpet player HTMS student and former Magnolia student, Max Dube. The Magnolia Choir sang the following: "American Every Day", "Americans We", "Armed Forces Salute", "You're a Hero", and "On Veterans Day." During the "Armed Forces Salute," veterans attending the concert stood and were recognized with an applause from the audience. Mr. Moore's wife, Mrs. Shannon Moore, HTHS and HTMS Associate Director of Bands, was present to run the sound system for the entire concert. Special thanks to Dr. Phyllis Faust, for coordinating the logistics of the program and allowing the special event to run smoothly.

The Marine Corps League presented the flag, and the HTMS Choir performed the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "Stand with the Brave". Several sixth grade students spoke during the ceremony and thanked all veterans in attendance for their service to our country. The students, teachers, and parents enjoyed completing the hands-on activities together.
