PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Families,
We start this letter with a celebration of a group of people with whom you are very familiar: our amazing and dynamic teachers! Our teachers have gone above and beyond creating learning experiences during this pandemic and have succeeded in ways we couldn’t even imagine when we started this last spring. As we finish out our “Teacher Appreciation Week”, we’d like to say a public thank you to them for everything. They have been loving the cards, drawings, and little gifts students have given them, so thanks to you for your thoughtfulness and support.
Does the warm weather inspire you to do anything special? Maybe an extra lap with your beloved pooch? Maybe a socially distant picnic with your neighbors? Maybe an opportunity to catch up with long neglected yard work? My granddaughter has a special name for this time of year “Buddy Pink Tree Time”, in reference to the blossoming (budding) trees all around.
The promise of warm weather also inspired many of us to pull our jogging shoes out of the closet, dust them off, and the hit trails this week! We wouldn’t be alone. We are in the middle of our modified Bonny Slope Jog-a-Thon this week! Students are hitting the designated trails to help fundraise for our school. A well-loved event while held at school, participation rates have been soaring since it started, and it’s not too late to begin! Even some teachers have been getting out to the trails to cheer on our runners. Fundraising benefits our school by providing funding to support our hard-working teachers and enrichment activities. Thanks to all who have pounded the pavement in support of all of us!
With the warm weather comes planning for next year. Below this letter is a link to ask you to fill out your plans for next year. This helps us maintain accurate enrollment information, and assists with our planning. Thank you so much for taking the time to fill it out for us! Below that is another form if you’d like to give input on your student(s) placement for next year’s class. Please keep in mind we do not take requests for specific teachers.
As always, we close with a bounteous basket of thanks. For everything that you have done, and will do for your students, thank you.
Jim Hiller and Janet Maza

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Identification Update
Identification of TAG students typically includes a test score from a normed national or state standardized test. In response to the challenges and impacts of COVID-19, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) adopted a temporary rule allowing districts to pause TAG identification for the 2020-21 school year.
The rationale provided to ODE for this pause included the following:
“Historically underrepresented populations (students of color, economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities and linguistically diverse) are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. . . The 2020-21 school year has been anything but typical. Adhering to traditional processes and administering assessments that were developed and normed in a time and space that does not reflect our current reality is concerning to many district and state leaders.”
We agree. It is not in the best interest of students in this atypical year, particularly our youngest learners, to take assessments in the last eight weeks of school solely for the purpose of TAG identification. We believe that testing students for TAG identification in the fall after school routines are established is a better plan.
This pause will not affect nominated students in grades 5-8, whose testing has already been scheduled.

Parent Input for 2021-2022 School Year
Our priority is to create harmonious and productive classrooms for next year. To create class groups, grade level teams use a number of data points about each student including: gender; reading, writing and math levels; learning characteristics; behavior/social characteristics; and more. Achieving balanced classes is a complex process. We are not able to honor individual teacher requests. Please submit responses by May 14, 2021

Beaverton Safe Routes to School Parent Survey
Hybrid Families:
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of the program is to make walking and rolling to school safe, convenient, and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into howstudents travel to and from school and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be combined with classroom tallies to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses for three weeks starting May 1st.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
Thank you,
Leah Biado-Luis

Jog-a-Thon in Progress- Let's Do This BSE!
Our one and only fundraising event of the year, the Jog-a-Thon, is in progress! We are making good headway towards fully funding all the teacher support and enrichment activities BSCO is bringing to the community this year. The teachers and community are rallying behind our students, participation keeps increasing each day and the runners are having a blast! If you haven’t yet contributed, the link is below. Let’s do this BSE!
The JAT runs from MONDAY, MAY 3rd to SUNDAY, MAY 9th. Below are the routes and distances to help you keep track of your miles. Total miles run during the week of the JAT need to be logged in Pledgestar by FRIDAY, MAY 14th!
We encourage families to get out and run/walk together. If you coordinate with other families we ask that you wear a mask and socially distance. The weather for the most part looks like it will cooperate, get out and enjoy it! Look for balloons and course markings on each route and don’t forget to take pictures and tag #BSEJAT2021.
If you haven’t signed up it’s not too late to get in on the fun. Register here! https://pledgestar.com/bonnyslope/
We hope to see you out there this week!
Please visit the BSCO website for all the information on this year's Jog-A-Thon
