Big Spring High School News
October
Homecoming
Big Spring’s homecoming dance was held on the 13th of October at the high school. Throughout the week student council sold tickets during lunches and the art club painted the “Hollywood” sign on the windows overlooking the commons to match the theme of “California Dreaming.” Congratulations to Zach Hasco and Katelyn Cornman for being named King and Queen of the dance!
Seniors and Sports
Girl's Soccer
This year's seniors for girls soccer are Taylor Zimmerman, Erin Brandeburg, Abi Sweger, Taylor Gibboney, Lyra Clark, Brittany Mullen, Katie Meves, Erinne Frampton, Taryn Novak, Makenzie Drake, and Kaylie Bistline. Captain Abi Sweger has said this team's improvement from the beginning of the season to the end was absolutely incredible.
Football
This year's football seniors are Timmy Siwy, Braden Petty, Abi Sweger, Jamie Tressler, Mike Kutzmonich, Zach Hasco, Nick Thomas, and Seth Franklin. A big moment in their season was scoring a last-second touchdown to beat Greencastle.
Boy's Soccer
Travis Williams, Jake Lustig, Levi Fertig, Tristan Failor, Michael Witter, Andrew Runyon, Harrison Reisinger, Tucker Williams, and Connor Oburn make up the seniors for the boy's soccer team. This year Connor Oburn, Cace Oburn, and Tucker Williams were selected to the 1st Team All-Stars. Tucker Williams is the first Big Spring goalie to be selected to the first team! Also, congratulations to Levi Fertig as he was given 2nd Team All-Stars honors.
Cross Country
Cross Country had another successful season this year. Seniors Ishmael Kirkwood, Dain Vallie, Ian Lay, Jessie Laird V, Melanie Macioce, Fawn Bennet, Chris Britain, Dylan Baker, and Trevor Moyer are a big reason for that. A highlight of their year was the Mid Penn meet held at our very own Big Spring High School. Our two top runners Ishmael Kirkwood and Gabi Reifsnyder finished 14th and 27th respectively. Also, congratulations to the boy's team as they have qualified for states! Females, Gabi Reifsnyder and Fawn Bennett qualified individually and will be joining the boys in Hershey!
Field Hockey
The field hockey team was lead by their senior class of Jaime Yaukey, Shelby Miller, Taylor Hutchinson, Hannah Martin, Hanna Durff, and manager Katelyn Cornman. The highlight of their season was winning their division in a nailbiter of a game versus West Perry. Congratulations to Taylor Hutchinson, Alex Kutulakis, Laney Norieka, Sydney Witter, and Jaime Yaukey for being selected for First Team All-Stars. Jaime Yaukey was also named the player of the year!
Volleyball
Volleyball seniors include Cambree Darr, Carlee Beth Schaffer, Bentli Burke, Kirsten Sebers, and Caroline Horst. These seniors experienced 4 straight years of making it to districts, none more special than this year. Going into their last couple games they knew they needed to win in order to make it in. Through hard work and always believing in themselves, the team won out and qualified as the 15th seed in the district playoff tournament.
Golf
The golf team this year consisted of four seniors; Colin Boyd, Ridgley Snyder, Dylan Sinick, and Allison Spencer. After losing the top two golfers on the team last year, this senior class knew they needed to step up. Dylan Sinick and Caleb Motter both made the Mid-Penn golf match, where Caleb Motter finished 15th and moved onto the district match!
Cheerleading
The five cheerleading seniors were Logan Logan, Ryleigh Goodyear, Amelia Ingraham, Ashley Shoemaker, and Chloe Hayslett. According to captain Logan Logan, cheering their team on to victory at the Greencastle game was a highlight of their season thus far! The fall cheerleading season continues on until December 9th when they host the major competition of the year. We wish the girls the best of luck from here on out.
Band
This year's band seniors consisted of Alli Beecher, Erin Hurley, Sam Sheaffer, Jay Ni, Grace Patterson, Robert McClure, Dalton Kiner, Sam Keen, and Camryn Mounts. This group knows how to have fun. When asked about high points in the season, Mr. Nobile being hit with pies at the end of band camp was always high on the list. It is a fun tradition that everyone always has a great time with. The section that gets to hit him in the face with pies is determined by who wins "penny wars" by raising the most money in change!
New Plantings
Outside of the commons, new plantings and giant rocks have been installed for security purposes. Big Spring always has the safety of their students at the forefront and this is just another example of how they are always trying to make the schools a safer place.
PSAT Exam
Big Spring once again hosted a PSAT exam for students at the high school. The exam is free for all juniors and $15 for all other grades. This was a great opportunity for underclassmen to gauge how they will do on the SAT exam.
Big Spring Host's Special Olympics
On Tuesday, October 16th, Special Olympics took place at Dickinson college. Many volunteers from the high school and middle school were buddies for the kids from all of the Big Spring Schools. It is always a great experience for not only the kids participating but for the buddies to give back to their community and school.
Big Spring FFA Takes On National Convention
This past week three members along with Mrs. Nailer and Mrs. Fulton traveled to Indianapolis Indiana to participate in this year's FFA National Convention. There, students met up with FFA members from all across the United States. This was a great opportunity for our students to see what other schools are participating in and how their FFA program might run differently thank ours.
