Weekly Update from Superintendent Dr. Marlon King
Open the Door. Let’em In
If you looked closely at the calendar on Monday, you may have noticed September 21 was the last day of summer. However, for many of our students, it was a day of new beginnings as hundreds of JMCSS students returned to our campuses to resume in-person learning. This three-week hybrid schedule will allow for the gradual phase in of traditional instruction for more than 4,000 students. Our buses are running and our food services team is continuing to provide meals and pickup options for traditional, virtual, and CyberSchool students. It takes a team. As we all continue to pull in the same direction, our school district will continue to provide safe and nurturing environments for the young people in our community. Please take a look at the hybrid schedule for those students who chose our traditional - in-person - learning option.

Increased revenue in 90 Days
I continue to be amazed by the increasing support residents in Jackson and Madison County continue to show this school system. Our corporate neighbors are among our most passionate supporters. Thanks to their help, our grant totals have eclipsed the $900,000 mark. When I consider the number of grants our team has secured in just 90 days on the job, I am both humbled and inspired. Add this to the support we’ve received from our non-profit allies like the United Way and the Jackson Housing Authority and it’s clear, we’re #WINNING for our students and for the community.

TDOE LEAPS $168,000 x 3 years

Welcome Aboard and Welcome Back
I would like to take this opportunity to again welcome our four new board members. O'Neal Henley, Sherry Franks, Debbie Gaugh, and Andre Darnell. The four new members joined newly re-elected board member Janice Hampton in the swearing-in ceremony; which was conducted by Judge Kyle Atkins. The new board selected Pete Johnson to continue to serve as chairman and AJ Massey to serve as vice chairman and parliamentarian. I am excited about the unique perspective each new board member will provide in moving our district forward.
Three cheers for Barry Cooper!
The Tennessee School Board Association has recognized one of our county's greatest ambassadors. Barry Cooper has been awarded the 2020 School Volunteer Recognition Award for the Southwest CORE region. In addition to saving lives through JACOA - the Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, Barry has volunteered and led mentoring efforts on several JMCSS campuses for a number of years. He is undoubtedly an incredible person with a passion for helping kids and a new friend of mine. Congratulations, Barry!
Jackson Arts Council Engagement
Most people of a certain age have heard about the 3R's reading, [w]riting and 'rithmetic. It’s no secret, however, that I’m also a big proponent of the 3A’s - Academics, Arts, Athletics! They make for a healthy school system. That's one of the reasons why I looking forward to engaging the Jackson Arts Council throughout my tenure in Jackson-Madison County. From the performing arts, to the literary and visual arts, the Jackson Arts Council is a major influence on the quality of life for our residents; young and old alike. This is one of the many ways our district and our community continues to #Win
