TYWLS Summer News
A Message From Principal Persad, Week of July 10th 2020
Summer's Here!
Today begins the THIRD official week of summer, oh how the time can fly! We hope you and your families are enjoying the much needed down time. I've been making use of the local beaches (safely distanced) and some camping trips!
As August and September inch closer, there seems to be one topic on everyone's mind: how will schools operate in the fall?
We are taking a 3C approach: Care, Communication and Clarity. We hope this newsletter is a part of that solution! We will take guidance from the NYCDOE and make sure the safety of our staff and students are the pinnacle of all of decisions.

School Re-Opening Updates!
*Our School Building Re-Opening Committee will be meeting at the end of this week. We will review the survey data families submitted to the NYCDOE (although, less than 25% of you replied, and we do wish we had a more accurate sense of your thoughts as we make a choice on a re-opening model).
*Linked below is a previously sent survey LINK from TYWLS Astoria (separate to the NYC DOE survey) to get a sense of our plans for the fall- PLEASE complete it if you haven't already!
*We will meet with our School Leadership Team thereafter and also review the model choice.
*A model will be selected for our school based on OPTIONS provided from the NYCDOE (it will be made based on the following criteria: space, your survey data on plans to send your child to school, and teachers who are able to work in person)
*We will host a FAMILY TOWN HALL virtually and share this model and allow for questions in advance (DATE TO COME!)
*Families will have a VERY important upcoming survey ---to determine if they PLAN to keep their child in virtual learning in September OR if they would rather send her to school (based on the model we suggest). Much more to come on this information. Do note, families will have a few weeks to make this decision, and structured dates during the school year to OPT back in or OUT of virtual learning/in school learning.
*All guidance on re-opening will come directly from our Chancellor and Mayor. All information is always "tentative" and will depend on the guidance from CDC, health officials, etc. With all changes, we will update you as we learn more!
Staying Engaged This Summer!
The DOE is hosting several weekly citywide activity challenges and virtual field trips this summer for students in grades K–12 from July 13–August 17. All you need to join the fun is your DOE student account and your parent’s permission. (See LINK below)
