High School Counseling Newsletter (quarter 1)
Welcome Back!
The beginning of each school year is full of possibility and helping you get off to a good start is important for success. My role as your School Counselor is to be an advocate for you; assisting you with your academics, career development, and personal/social areas and work I also work collaboratively with your parents, teachers, administrators, and community.
Over the next four years of your high school experience, I will be meeting with you to plan your high school academic program and to assist you in developing post-graduation goals. I am also available to meet with you to discuss individual concerns and to answer questions you may have. Please don’t hesitate to stop by, call or email.
If you haven't already, please pop down to the Counseling Department to say hi and introduce yourself.
AP Exams
Are you taking an AP course? The exams will be administered in the spring of 2024. There are FOUR steps:
1.) REGISTRATION
WHEN: Ongoing
DEADLINE: 11/04/22
You will need to log into your College Board account to register for each exam. You will need a "Join Code" to register for each exam. Please make an appointment with me before the deadline if you need help with this.
2.) You'll need to fill out the Newmarket AP Exam Confirmation form
3.) Payment: The Counseling Dept. will be collecting AP exam fees. The deadline for AP exam fees Nov. 4th. Fees: $98
4.) 2023-24 AP Exam Contract- please fill out, sign and return to the Counseling Dept. by Nov 3rd.
Seniors

When: 8:00-2:30. More information to follow.
How: Sign-up for an appointment (link will be sent out closer to the date to select an appt. time).
- The I Applied! campaign is designed to encourage and support seniors hit submit to those college applications! It does not matter if you are looking at 2 year, 4 year or Certificate Programs - all seniors are welcome!
- There will still be one $500 Scholarship given to a Newmarket senior.
- NH Colleges/Universities will be waiving their applications fees again for another year day of event ONLY!
- Admission Reps work with seniors by answering questions, encouraged FAFSA completion and reviewed applicants and college essays. Be on the lookout for Ms. B's presentation date and sign up!
The College Tour on Amazon Prime- The College Tour is a TV series brought to you by multi-award winning producers. The series tells the story of colleges and universities around the world. Each episode of The College Tour focuses on a single college or university. From campus life, academics, housing, sports, activities, and much more… each student-driven segment gives the audience an inside look at what it’s truly like being a student at the featured college or university.

College Applications- DUE DATES!
Are you applying for Early Decision? Typically Nov. 1st
Early Action? Typically mid- December
**Make sure you have filled out your FSA ID and FAFSA BEFORE these deadlines so that you are eligible for ED/EA**
- You need to remember to request all letters of recommendations at least four weeks prior to your deadlines. If you have a December 1st deadline, requests for transcripts and recommendations should be made no later than November 3rd.
- You are required to fill out the Brag Sheet. Make a copy of the document and then share with Ms. B (and/or any recommenders)
- Then you'll need to make an appointment to meet with Ms. B after the Brag Sheet is filled out.

QuestBridge-they are looking for high school seniors who have shown outstanding academic ability despite financial challenges. Deadline 9/26/23.

- Some colleges are doing virtual tours. Take a peek at UNH's https://www.unh.edu/virtualtour/). Go to the school's website you're interested in to view their virtual tour. Need help with this? Please email me to set up an appointment. Get a 1st hand view: 'walk' around the quad, 'sit' in on a class, 'visit' the dorms.
- Questions answered: what are the class sizes?, what activities, clubs, sports are there?, & how about the caf?.
- Valuable info: student newspaper, what's the admissions process like, what's the day-to-day like, etc.

Opportunities
If you’re still navigating your way through the high school experience as many sophomores are, now is a great time to seek out new opportunities. You’re still busy, but you’ve got a little bit more time then you’ll have later when you’re more focused on the ACT/SAT, college applications, or graduation.
Try out extracurricular activities you’ve always been curious about or take a new leadership position in a club or playing a sport, or working part-time or volunteering.

Part-Time Work
- Take a peek at the bulletin board outside of the Counseling Dept. for posted job opportunities
- Once you secure a job, ask your employer for a "Request for Child Labor" form and bring it to the Main Office for a Worker's Permit
Helpful To-Dos:
- Meet with me, your school counselor to see what electives might match with your interests, skills and learning style.
- Talk to your teachers immediately when you begin to notice you're struggling; don't wait!
- Talk to upperclassmen about their process and the decisions they made that were successful or things they would have done differently.

High School Freshmen Timeline and Checklist
Freshmen in high school can begin planning for college with this step-by-step guide.
Add/Drop
Monday, Aug. 28th & Tuesday, Aug. 29th
- Students will go to their assigned classes. The only students that can come down for schedule changes on these first two days are those with empty blocks in their schedule during that specific block.
- Schedule changes only during the block you wish to change.
Last day for schedule changes will be Wed., Sept. 6th.

Newmarket Jr/Sr High School affords students multiple opportunities to earn credit outside of the traditional classroom. Please see your School Counselor, Ms. B to explore these opportunities.

- Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO)- a means of meeting the diverse instructional needs of students with different talents, interests, and development. Our ELO Coordinator is Mr. Hayes (hayesj@newmarket.k12.nh.us). Reach out to him with any questions and opportunities.
- Allow opportunities for extensions beyond those addressed in the regular classroom.
- Credits can be granted for extended learning activities, including, but not limited to, independent study, private instruction, team sports, performing groups, internships, community service, and work-study.
Tutoring
Do you need help with a class(es), study tips, or organization?
- Teen Tutors- our juniors and seniors volunteer to assist students that are struggling. This will be up and running by the beginning mid-October. I'll share our Teen Tutors form for you to fill out to identify your area(s) of need.

Dual Enrollment
**Open to Juniors & Seniors**
What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college classes while they are still enrolled in high school. These classes count for both high school and college credit. High school students who complete dual enrollment classes generally take fewer classes in college and save money on total college costs.
Why Dual Enrollment?
*Get an affordable jump start to a college credits and career skills
*Transfer credits to many colleges and universities
Two options:
eStart- online classes taught by a college professor
Early College- learning options are in the classroom, remote, online, and/or hybrid.
