From the Principal
Kia ora koutou
As the end of Term 3 draws near we reflect on what a highly successful and action-packed last couple of weeks we've had.
Highlights from last week, congratulations to our fantastic Roald Dahl Quiz team who prepared carefully and worked well as a team to finish second equal. You are keeping up the fine tradition of great results at this fun event run by the Hāwera Library. Also a big well done to our Lion's Speech Makers Competition team of Lachlan Pick, Sam Maulder & Lucas Hunt who did a fine job presenting their speeches alongside students from other local schools. Our senior Kapa Haka students were also asked to perform at The Warehouse as part of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) celebrations, it was a bit of an unusual setting but as always our group was powerful and definitely impressed everyone there. Awesome mahi kids!
On Wednesday in perfect weather we held our school cross-country and adventure race. Once again this was a huge success. Congratulations to everyone who placed in the cross-country and to those who have been selected to represent us at the Taranaki event next week (see details below). I was really impressed by the number of students who pushed themselves to achieve their "personal best", that's the KAHA Way! Everyone who participated should feel very proud of themselves. Thank you to all our staff and parent helpers for your contribution to a wonderful day. Next term we turn our focus to athletics.
Yesterday I had the special joy of watching our past pupils Luka Kamana and Whitikau Rio deliver an amazing mau rakau lesson alongside Matua Bodene our tutor. It was beautiful to see the positive impact these role-models have on our up and coming leaders of tomorrow. Also an extremely proud moment for me as their former teacher; there is nothing better than seeing our rangatahi (youth) shine in an area they are so passionate and talented in. We hope to see them again soon!
Last night I had the pleasure of watching our play "The Empty Pot" presented as part of The Barbara Leydon Junior Drama Festival. Well done to all our students who took to the stage, including those who performed as part of other plays. You confidence and presence was great. Special thank you to the director Mrs Coulson for her efforts preparing the students over the last few weeks.
I'm looking forward to seeing the winners of the Talent Quest later on this today. Passion projects continue and will be extended into next term and touch practices are happening daily for the various team. It's all happy busy times at HPS and that's just the way we like it!
Finally, as a school community we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Whaea Tina Thompson and her whanau for the loss of their beloved mother and Nan Evelyn. We know she will be deeply missed, our thoughts and aroha are with you all at this sad time.
'Ma te huruhuru ka rere te manu-Adorn the bird with feathers so it can fly!'
Ngā mihi nui

The Great Kererū Count
Happy counting!
Love Kaha
The Great Kererū Count is NZ’s biggest citizen science project to help gather information on the abundance and distribution of the New Zealand pigeon — also known as kererū, kūkū or kūkupa.
Everyone in New Zealand can get involved with the Great Kererū Count, whether you see any kererū or not, sharing your observations with us will help build up a clearer picture of where the kererū live, how many there are and what they are feeding on.
The humble kererū is one of New Zealand’s most valuable assets when it comes to our native forests. Long before humans came to this country, kererū have been undertaking the largest plant restoration project the country has ever seen. Kererū are the only bird left in New Zealand that are able to swallow and disperse the seeds from our largest native trees such as tawa, taraire, pūriri and matai. Kererū can live for 21+ years and are essential for native bush regeneration. Their disappearance would be a disaster for our native forests.
