ConVal High School Happenings - December 2, 2022
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
I hope everyone had a peaceful Thanksgiving. It is hard to believe it is December and more holidays are on the horizon. We have three full weeks left of school before we depart for our holiday recess, and there is quite a bit going on in our classrooms, on campus, and in our communities.
Below you will find highlights of students and staff who have attended opportunities off campus, information from school counseling, athletics and co-curriculars, our nurses and other helpful things to know. I would encourage you to preview our table of contents directly below this message.
Please mark your calendars and consider joining us for our evening Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 20. The concert will take place in our gymnasium and will feature our instrumental and choral ensembles. Our students have been rehearsing and look forward to sharing the gift of music with those who are able to attend.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Israel Bernal Lopez who has joined our school community as a teacher in our World Language department. Please see the segment below to learn more about our new teacher.
Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!
Best,
Heather

New Spanish Teacher Joins ConVal
Israel Bernal Lopez has joined ConVal High School as a Spanish language teacher. A native of Seville, Spain, he has taught Spanish in the United States for the past 17 years. He has teaching experience at the middle school, high school, as well as college levels. In addition to his teaching credentials, Bernal Lopez is a licensed soccer coach, has worked for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Equatorial Guinea in Africa, and is an accomplished sculptor. His teaching philosophy can be summed up in a single sentence, he says: "Persist in your dream to succeed." Welcome to ConVal!
Classroom Snapshots!
Miss Gilpatrick's Geometry Class
Students in Miss Gilpatrick's geometry class are applying their knowledge of similar triangles in a group project. At any given time of day, the sun creates shadows that allow for proportional relationships to be calculated. Students measured the shadows of structures outside, such as a lamp post, and used proportions to solve for the height of many tall objects around school.
Mrs. Harris' English Class
The Blackout Poetry board for Mrs. Harris’ 10th grade English classes. Students are reading Night by Elie Wiesel. Night is the autobiographical account of Elie Wiesel’s survival as a teenager in the concentration camps during the Holocaust. Blackout poetry is the process of taking a single page of text and isolating words to create an individual student’s poetic understanding of what they are reading.
Mr. Bowman's World Religions Class
In Eric Bowman's World Religions class, students have been studying holidays celebrated by religions of the world. Students thought it would be fun if they prepared food traditionally served at these holiday celebrations. While it was not required, students made food to share with their classmates, creating a fun, festive environment. In this photo, students are enjoying chicken, cookies, and salad commonly consumed in Middle Eastern countries in celebration of Eid al Fitr.

Students Attend Fire Fighting Training In Concord
The NHFA drill yard welcomed students from Peterborough, Keene and ConVal under the supervision of Instructors Cole, Gitchell and Carney, to the obstacle course for the SCBA maze to gain proficiency moving around with obscured vision- through doors, diminished clearances & over and under obstructions. They are also working on communication and becoming more familiar with their air packs.
Manufacturing Program Field Trip
Students from the Manufacturing program went to D.S. Huntington Company and PHAZE Technology Center to explore the manufacturing process and production, from design to a finished product. Both of these facilities offered a hands-on demonstration of the processes, productions and real life experiences and expectations that employers and companies everywhere are looking for when these students are ready to enter the workforce. Both of these tours also opened some eyes of potential internships and career options as students advance in the Manufacturing program at ConVal. If you are looking to learn more about Manufacturing & Engineering, please speak with your guidance counselor to see what options are available next semester.
Director Jen Kiley (front, center) and ATC staff attend the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) CareerTech VISION 2022 conference in Las Vegas where they complete professional development workshops and give presentations. ACTE is the professional organization that seeks to empower educators to deliver high-quality CTE programs in order to ensure that all students are positioned for career success.
