PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
MESSAGE FROM DR. HERNANDEZ
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well.
We want to thank you all for your support in talking to your children about the topic of appropriate use of phones and social media.
In addition to talking to our students during Daily Announcements about this topic, as well as planning the development and implementation of learning and reflecting opportunities for them, we have made Digital Citizenship, the behavior focus for the month of December.
Thank you again,
Respectfully,
Dr. Hernandez.

GCPS COVID-19 UPDATE:
The latest Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) report on community transmission indicates "High" transmission of COVID-19 in Gwinnett County. As a result, masks are required in all GCPS facilities. Masks also are required on buses in compliance with federal mandates.
Under the school district’s current COVID-19 protocols, community transmission levels must be maintained at the "Moderate" or "Low" level for two consecutive weeks before district mask guidance transitions to “Strongly Recommended.”

FROM OUR MEDIA CENTER:
Coleman Reads is Coleman Middle School’s one book, one school reading program. Our goal is to have our school community, students, parents, teachers and other community members reading the same book. We want people to be talking about the book in the classrooms, at the PTA meetings and at the grocery store. Our goal is for not only our students to be excited about reading, but our whole community.
The book is available for purchase through MyPayments plus for $7.
The Coleman Library Media Center will be having contests and events pertaining to the book from January 18th—February 23rd 2022. The first trivia contest is now live both on our program website or in person in the Coleman Media Center. Winners will receive a free book certificate to redeem at our Scholastic Book Fair on February 22nd - 25th.
Our culminating event will be a combined Literacy Night/ Black History night on Thursday, February 24th at Coleman Middle School from 6-8pm.

Spread the love this Valentine's Day by donating pajamas to sick children in need at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta:
We are collecting donated clothing **with tags** to take to CHOA's Emergency Room "closet". Clothes closet you ask- why? Don’t the kids wear gowns? Yes! But many kids come in with burned, dirty clothes, or clothes covered in substances. When they leave or are finally allowed to wear regular PJs, they have nothing. They send kids home often in just a gown, or kids who stay for an extended period of time miss some snuggly comforting PJs.
We are hoping to restock the "closet" with some new items-t-shirt, soft shorts/pants, pajamas are their most needed items. Per CHOA policy, all donations must be new/with tags. Drop off all donations in Ms. Brooks' classroom.
SUPER BOWL LVI NFL GAME FOOTBALL FOR ONE LUCKY STUDENT!
FROM OUR PTA:
PTA General Meeting:
Please join us for a general PTA meeting on Wednesday, February 23rd at 6:30pm. Though we are aiming to get back to conducting PTA meetings in person shortly, we will do this one on Zoom as our agenda will be quick.
We will need a quorum of voting PTA members in order to adopt our budget and vote in a nominating committee for next year's Executive Board.
If you can commit to attending, we would appreciate it! Please RSVP to colemanwildcatspta@gmail.com. We'll send the Zoom link to all attendees as the meeting approaches.
Nominating Committee/Future Executive Board:
If you have been looking to get more involved in the PTA, now is your time! We need to seat a nominating committee to present candidates for next year's Executive Board. As the nominating committee will be voted in at the meeting on February 23rd, please let us know as soon as possible.
We also NEED parents interested in taking a position on the Board. Many of us currently on the Board are either moving on from CMS or reaching the end of our two years of eligibility in or current positions - this includes the two Presidents!
If you're hesitant, just remember that each one of us on the Board was hesitant at first, too, but we truly have a great time serving our children and yours!
If you are interested in being part of the nominating committee or the Board, please email colemanwildcatspta@gmail.com, and indicate your area of interest.
Exciting News!:
Last semester we conducted a survey regarding use of Fall Fundraiser proceeds. As GCPS is installing water bottle fillers in our school at no cost to us (but on their timeline), the overwhelming majority of respondents indicated a preference for using the funds on outdoor play equipment instead.
We're excited to announce that we've placed an order for a basketball goal for the blacktop! As soon as it arrives, we'll notify GCPS for installation. We'll also buy some other games that they can enjoy on the lawn.
When you and your students pass by, you'll know that you helped make it happen. Thank you to all who donated!
Upcoming Socials:
Please mark your calendars for our 6th/7th grade social (March 11th) and the 8th grade dance (April 30th). We're looking forward to providing the kids a space to enjoy some time with their friends outside of class.
We will need a committee to help make these events happen. If you can help with this, please send us an email to address mentioned above.

When guest speakers visit a classroom, students listen to a presentation to learn about the speaker’s career, business and industry, and ask questions to help them consider whether they might like to pursue a career path in the industry. Often our speakers relate to our current PBL units, but we hope to expand this to a career fair-type event.
Designed to meet specific learning objectives, guest speaker presentations are linked to the curriculum and help students connect what they’re learning in school with the workplace. Presentations are usually conducted at the school, but in some cases, guest speakers may “visit” a classroom electronically via Zoom or some other format.
GCPS INVITES COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESOURCE REVIEW COMMITTEE:
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is inviting parents and community members to apply for the district’s Instructional Resources Review Committee (IRRC), a group charged with evaluating print and digital instructional resources. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center (ISC) located at 437 Old Peachtree Road, NW, in Suwanee. Instructional resources will be reviewed for courses in the areas of Health (grades K-9), Mathematics (grades K-5 and select High School courses), Career and Technical Education (select courses in grades 6-12), and Social Studies (select elective courses in grades 9-12).

OUR PROACTIVE PLAN
We continue our committment to maintain in-person instruction. However, in the event that there is a need to temporarily pivot to digital learning due to COVID19 we want to be certain that each student has access. Our teachers and students are ready IF we need to make this change.
In the event we temporarily transition to digital learning, Coleman Middle will implement our typical digital learning day plan and schedule.
As a reminder:
Teachers will post a lesson for students to complete in Google Classroom - Humanities, Math, Science, and Connections. Students may log on at any time during the day to complete the lessons posted in Google Classroom; live instruction will not take place.
Teachers will be available via Zoom (Zoom link found on every teacher's eCLASS page) at the following times to answer questions:
6th grade - 10:15 - 10:45
7th grade - 11:00 - 11:30
8th grade - 12:30 - 1:00
Connections - 1:15 - 1:45
Beginning on 1/6, homeroom teachers surveyed students to determine if a device would be needed for digital learning. If your student still needs a device, please tell her/him to speak to their homeroom teacher or call the front office at 678-407-7400.
Please remember that students and families will be responsible for lost or damaged devices.
