We completed a great Homecoming week!
During the week, many staff and students participated in Spirit Week. The week, we followed up with a fun assembly, a highly competitive football game, recognition of our Homecoming Court, and fireworks. Saturday ended the Homecoming Festivities with a well-attended dance, bringing in almost 900 students.
This is a four-day week for students, as Friday, October 20, is a Professional Development Day for Staff and no school for students.
Please continue reminding students of our board policy (see page 4 of 4) of SHS being a closed campus. Please talk with your student(s) about staying on campus, including during lunch.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
Mike Washington

Spartan Saturday - October 28th 9 am to 11 am
Date Changed to Oct 26th For Hazards of E-Cigarettes - Upcoming Advisory Series
Many teens are curious about e-cigarettes. In 2022, about 14.1% of high school students and 3.3% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. Nearly half of high school students have tried an e-cigarette in some areas.
Many teens believe that e-cigarettes are safe. In reality, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and toxins, some known to cause cancer. Nicotine is highly addictive, especially to a developing teen brain.
What begins as experimentation can easily lead to a lifetime of nicotine addiction.
It does not take that long for young people to become addicted to nicotine because:
E-cigarettes provide nicotine in doses as large as, or larger than, regular cigarettes.
Children and youth become addicted to nicotine much faster than adults.
Nicotine has more harmful effects on the developing adolescent brain, making it worse for kids than adults.
Nicotine use as a teen raises the risk of using other substances and experiencing addiction later in life.
To help our students make better choices, SHS is training students by using a resource called CATCH My Breath over several advisory lessons starting October 26th.

The Great Shakeout
Students and staff across the school district — and the state — will participate in the annual Great American ShakeOut drill at 10:19 a.m. Oct. 19 to practice earthquake safety and test our early warning system.
The district deployed an earthquake early warning system in 2019 at Stanwood Elementary — the first school in the state to connect to the USGS’s ShakeAlert system. We have since added sensors to all 13 of its buildings and connected them to a centralized intercom that is automatically activated by a seismic event.
The sensors are part of the automated earthquake early warning system, called ShakeAlert, that is now available to more than 50 million residents within the country's most earthquake-prone region. You can download the ShakeAlert app to be automatically notified of earthquakes.
Learn more about our alert system HERE.

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. In an effort to demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom, and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
We have job openings
There are several open positions available within our school district. Open positions include:
- Substitute bus drivers
- Substitute food service workers
- Substitute custodians
- Paraeducators

- Athletic trainer
- Nurses
Many of these jobs offer flexible hours and shifts that are perfect for stay-at-home parents, retirees, or part-time college students.
