On the move with Coach Horn and Coach Schuette
Hello everyone!
We are finishing up basketball skills and testing, and will begin our soccer unit. Third & Fourth graders are finishing up learning some important muscles. First and Second graders are still working on their last set of bones to memorize. Spring weather is coming soon... Hopefully! Keep Moving!
SHOES: Please have your student wear tennis shoes on their PE days, or have a set of them stored in the classroom. We are still seeing a lot of crocs and boots. Thanks so much!

From the Counselors
The counselor lessons in February are about honesty and making good choices.
We will also begin the process of student placements for the fall.
The goal of student placement is to design balanced classes, according to established criteria, which create the optimal learning environment for all Maize Elementary School students. Each classroom is a small community that must be representative of the diverse social, academic, and physical needs and abilities of all students. If you have any concerns about your child’s class placement for next year, please visit with us, Becky Stephens and Andrea Nietfeld—you can call us or email at bstephens@usd266.com or anietfeld@usd266.com.
Frequently Asked Questions about class placements:
If my older child had a teacher, will my younger child have that same teacher? Not necessarily! Sometimes that happens, but it’s not always followed or done purposely. So again, if you have concerns—please let us know.
Friends? Let us know about friends or separations. We want every student excited about the new year.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We do start working on class placements this early. We do not make teacher placements for students entering the intermediate buildings.

DENTAL SCREENINGS
We will be holding our annual Dental Screenings this year on Friday, February 2, 2024 in the Cafeteria.
HEALTH REMINDER…
Please remind your children to practice good handwashing, proper covering of their coughing/sneezing, and help them by getting their vaccinations to keep them healthy for school. Please keep your children home if they are exhibiting any of the following symptoms: fever over 100 degrees, headache, general aches and pains, fatigue and weakness, continuous coughing, chest discomfort, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Fever MUST be gone without the use of a fever reducing medication (i.e. Tylenol(Acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen)) for a full 24 hours before student is to return to school. Just a reminder that we do not have a supply of Tylenol or Ibuprofen here at school. We can only give medications that parents have supplied along with a signed document.
GIVING YOUR CHILD MEDICATION AT SCHOOL:
Complete a request—Administration of Medication form
The medication MUST be in the original container.
The medication must be current. Expired medication will not be administered.
The medication must be age appropriate. Any medication for a person older than the child will
require a signed form from the child’s physician.
All prescription medications MUST have the pharmacy label with the student’s name on the

Attendance is Important
After seven absences, professional documentation will be required for an absence to be excused. With this change, the district encourages parents to obtain a note from a medical provider when appropriate. Find a complete definition of an excused absence in the District Student Handbook. This is important because Kansas Law requires the school district to report truancy after unexcused absences accumulate (three in a row, five in a semester, or seven in a school year). For more information on truancy, please see the Compulsory Attendance Law (K.S.A. 72-3120).
If you know of an extended absence ahead of time you will need to fill out the Administrative Excusal form prior to the absence.
Sunshine Cart
The MES Sunshine Cart is requesting items to pass out to staff in February for a popcorn bar! All items are needed by February 15th and can be dropped off in the front office. Thank you for showing MES staff how much we love and appreciate them! Thank you to Chick Fil A for our recent pick me up, the cookies and brownies were delicious!
Any donations, monetary or food, can be brought or delivered to the school office. If you happen to know of a local company that would like to donate please contact messunshinecart@gmail.com.
