KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Happy 2024 to all new and returning Northwood families! What joy it brought us to see the smiles from our Explorers this week. If you are new to our school family, your homeroom teacher will make sure to reach out to you to answer any questions you may have. You can also find general Northwood Elementary School and Fulton County Schools district information in each link.
The start of each new year is an opportunity to start something new, build new routines, develop unique to-do lists, and create positive habits. I do hope that falling deeper in love with reading is included on those 2024 lists, too. The love of reading comes naturally to some students while others may need more encouragement, but either way, books in the hands of our Explorers is so important. Our grade levels do not assign a lot of worksheet type homework assignments but would prefer time spent in the afternoons and evenings to be spent reading near or with your children. Math skill practice is also on that afternoon task list 😉
Everyone at Northwood is looking forward to a positive and productive second semester!
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
ESOL 4th and 5th grade students expanding their English vocabulary.
ESOL EXPLORERS
Happy New Year! We are excited for the 2nd semester of the school year! Our ESOL students have had a great 1st semester making new friends, learning new vocabulary words, practicing phonics, and reading both fiction and nonfiction texts. We are so proud of ALL of our multilingual students as they acquire more of the English language and grow as learners.
In the next week, our ESOL students will be preparing to take the yearly ESOL Assessment called the ACCESS. The ACCESS test consists of four domains: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For grades 1-5, each section will be administered on a different day. For Kindergarten, the ACCESS test is given to each student individually. This ACCESS test will determine ESOL placement for the 2024-2025 school year. We look forward to having our students demonstrate the English skills that they have learned. Thank you for your continued support!
