École Sifton Admin Message:
February 6, 2024
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the month of February!
The month of January was definitely an interesting one with the cold weather for a few weeks, and then the down right tropical conditions we had after that! We want to thank our parent council for graciously purchasing new snow sleds for our snow hill here at the school. The students have really been enjoying them!
This month is going to be a quick one due to the fact that we have a short week almost every week! We also have our French Carnival happening for the whole school and our rescheduled Cinderella performance, and Teacher’s Convention.
With all of these exciting things happening, please be sure to check out the important dates in this newsletter!
Take care everyone!

Cold Weather
A reminder that school start time is at 8:45, and buses arrive at the school at 8:30. We do not have staff outside for student supervision in the morning until 8:25.
With the weather getting colder we would like to remind everyone that our cut off for outside recess is anything below -20C. So if it is below -20 we will not be sending students outside during the recess times, unless they are part of the Polar Bear Club.
Bus Cancellations
Battle River School Division follows an administrative procedure (AP 555)
around bus cancellations due to inclement weather. See blow for information regarding temperature:
AP 555 - 2.1 Temperature
2.1.1 Bus Routes will be cancelled when the air temperature reaches -40 degrees Celsius;
2.1.2 Bus Routes will be cancelled when the air temperature combined with wind chill reaches -40 degrees Celsius.
2.1.3 Air temperature and wind chill will be determined by accessing www.theweathernetwork.com and viewing the information for the town/village in which the school is located. This website displays temperature and wind chill for each area in the Division.
2.1.4 The information acquired above shall be obtained just prior to the bus route, not the night before. However, in extreme conditions, the Director of Transportation may make the decision the night before.
Reminder if buses are cancelled in the morning they will not run in the afternoon.
Art Club
Thank you for all the interest in Art Club.
If your child has signed up for Art Club, please see below for more information on the projects and dates.
Chess Club
The Chess Club is in full swing and we have already seen some amazing plays and a few checkmates. The Chess Club welcomes a different class everyday during lunch recess from Tuesday to Friday. At the moment, only the grades 3, 4 and 5 students are invited. A springtime tournament will be held after spring break. The Chess Club continues to welcome any chess sets that families would like to donate.
Carnaval d'hiver / Winter Carnival
Sifton Community Ice Sculpture
École Sifton Winter Carnival
Community Ice Sculpture
Friday, February 23
This year, as part of our Winter Carnival festivities, students will be creating an ICE SCULPUTURE in front of the school for the community to enjoy.
To make the construction a success, ALL STUDENTS are asked to bring ONE OR MORE BLOCKS OF ICE to school on Friday, February 23 to add to the sculpture!
HOW TO MAKE YOUR ICE BLOCK
1) Find empty containers in your recycling.
2) Fill containers with water. Add a few drops of food coloring if you have some.
3) Place the containers outside in your yard, on your porch or balcony, or in your freezer.
4) Bring your frozen containers to the front of the school the morning of Friday, February 23 before
class!
*** PLEASE NOTE: We would greatly prefer if students froze ice blocks using recycled MILK CARTONS (any size) or ALUMINUM PANS. Using a milk carton or aluminum pan will make it much easier for your student to remove the ice block from the container.
Frozen water balloons work well too! Empty plastic containers are also an option (e.g., recycled margarine, sour cream, yogurt containers).
Containers and recycling will NOT be returned. THANK YOU!! ***
Library Learning Commons News
Thank you to all the students and families who are using their library bags consistently and keeping our books in good reading condition.
Literacy week was January 22 - 26. We celebrated literacy with different activities that created excitement amongst us all.
Classes participated in a school wide door decorating contest. Judges came in from our Division Office to judge the doors and declare a winner. All the doors were exceptionally well done and it was a very hard decision. There was a tie for first place between 1K (Mrs. Kelly's grade 1 English class) and 3B (Mme Ballhorn's grade 3 French class). Congratulations!
