Don't Merely Try Harder, Try Differently...... BUT How?
Last week, we started thinking about what we have done or are doing to try DIFFERENTLY (not just harder). It's easy to get into a routine of what we are comfortable or familiar with, and just keep trying that harder. And that's great if it's working and we are seeing evidence of learning and growth, but what if it's not producing the success we hoped? What CAN we do to try differently?
This week, I saw the TED Talk from Angela Duckworth about Grit for perhaps the 20th time, and it made me think about MY grit and how do we build grit in others? School/teaching is not a sprint, it is a marathon so how do we help each other and our students show grit? Maybe this is the way we need to look at doing something differently?
If grit is showing passion and perseverance over long periods of time, how do we provide opportunities for our students, staff, and colleagues to do this? In a society of immediate answers and instant gratification, this can be difficult. So what can this look like in the classroom or during professional development? Is it experiential learning, project-based opportunities, interest-based action research, or something else?
We don't have all of the answers, but it we have a growth mindset and believe that ALL of the students and staff at SHS are capable of success, then we figure it out together.

David Luers
The AP Government students in Mr. Luers' class researched Civil RIghts' activists from the North who were unknown. They then completed a gallery walk to learn about the other activists and discussed reasons why these activists have been lesser known in history verses their Southern counterparts.

Jeff Maupin & the Marching Cardinals
Mr. Jeff Maupin led the Marching Cardinals to their first official halftime performance of the school year. The group sounded great and we look forward to their future competitions and performances.
