Cell Out For Soldiers
PRESS RELEASE:
Lake Orion has long been considered a close-knit, connected community. Now imagine one of Michigan’s largest high schools being cell phone free for an entire day, prompting the town’s students to interact like teenagers of the past, via real face-to-face communication – and all for a great cause!
On January 13th, Lake Orion High School’s 2,400 students will be asked to “cell out” and check-in their phones when they enter the building that morning, with the promise not access to them until the end of the day. Instead of texting, tweeting and using other social media to communicate between classes and at lunch, they will have to actually speak to each other like their peers did years ago, before the proliferation of cell phones and mobile technology. Every student who participates will be given a cell out t-shirt, provided by local businesses and supporters. Lake Orion is the largest high school in the state, possibly the nation, to ever attempt such a feat of cell phone cessation. This unique event will be year 8 for LOHS, and is noted as one of the best days of the year.
Most importantly, this will benefit U.S. servicemen and women overseas. For every phone given up, Lake Orion’s student leadership program is donating $1 to Cell Phones for Solders, and taking in additional donations from staff and students. This national charitable organization distributes phones to military personnel overseas, for use in calling home to their loved ones. The leadership class feels that the sacrifice of being cell phone free for a day is a small way to showing support for the our armed forces who sacrifice daily for our freedom.
This is an in school event, for students and invited service men and women only. Please be sure to follow us all week on social media to see the various pics, videos, and interviews about Cell Out and more!

LOHS Teacher of the Year 2022-23
At LOHS, we are very proud of the many dedicated and outstanding teachers who work very hard for the success of our students, especially during the most recent challenging years. As part of our commitment to recognize and honor our teaching staff, it is time to select a Lake Orion High School teacher as our 2023 Outstanding Teacher of the Year. We appreciate input from our families as we select our award winner.
Below is a link that will gather nomination information that is necessary for the selection committee. If you believe a LOHS teacher has gone above and beyond, has demonstrated excellence as a teacher, and is deserving of this award, we ask that you please complete the questions on the form at the link below to nominate that teacher by January 10, 2023.
Thank you for your assistance in helping us to recognize our outstanding staff members for the great work they do.

The Lake Orion Band Boosters will be partnering with Funds2org and hosting a used shoe donation drive that kicks-off in mid-January. This fundraiser helps offset this unnecessary waste and help keep shoes out of landfills. The gently used shoes that we collect will be consolidated and shipped by Funds2org to developing countries such as Haiti, Cambodia, and Botswana where they will be sold to small business owners for a very low price. In turn, the shoes will be sold by these small business owners to communities in need of proper footwear, at an inexpensive price. This helps create a path out of poverty for these small business owners in countries where there are limited, if any, job opportunities that pay a living wage.
THANK YOU LOHS FAMILIES For Donating Cookies!
Before heading out for the Holiday break, every LOHS Staff member was able to take home over a dozen cookies/goodies, thanks to donations by LOHS Families. Thank you to all who donated!
New College Scholarships for Michigan Students Announced

School Dismissal Manager
We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.
On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.
OK2Say
OK2SAY is available state-wide for public and private schools in Michigan; anybody can submit a confidential tip. Specially trained technicians receive the tips and filter the information to the appropriate agency to provide a timely and effective response.
