MARY-ANGELA'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te Whānau
Firstly, we keep the people in Turkey in our prayers after the devastating earthquake that has caused so much heartache. In New Zealand we know all too well the impact that this has on a community.
We also keep our Ethiopian families in our prayers, along with families whose country of birth is enduring conflict and injustices.
Welcome!
Being back at school with your tamariki is such a joy for all of our staff. Our whānau day was really well received with more than 150 children and their families taking part! This was a new initiative so it was great to know the concept suited many families.
Welcome to all of our new families. Our children have welcomed them generously. Welcome also to the new members of our staff team, Lauren King (Year 7&8 teacher) and Aleksandra Zajac (Ors specialist teacher).
Island Bay Festival
This Sunday the annual Island Bay Festival will be held in our community. SFDS is taking part in the festival. Here is the Website for the Festival. Any children who would like to participate in the festival parade, can meet us on Avon Street - we will have our SFDS flags and banners with us.
Thank you Robbie, our caretaker, for giving each of our school flags a flag pole! The children have met in their house groups this afternoon to drum up support and practise their chants.
The children taking part in the parade are asked to wear their house colours - and walk with their house group in the parade - we will all be together so it shouldn’t be hard to spot us.
Parents and caregivers are welcome to walk along the side to keep up with us in the parade. Please make arrangements to collect your child from the staff at the end of the parade, which will finish at about 10.30 -10.40am at Shoreland Park. The staff will wait with the children at the disability swing, which is the area we have been told to use by the festival organisers.
Kapahaka members (from 2022) will also be asked to help Island Bay School Kapahaka with the waiata at the end of the speeches at Shoreland park.
See you there!
Staff Professional Learning
Over the holidays we worked together to plan the learning. We also participated in professional learning: ‘Understanding behaviour and Responding Safely’. A helpful video was shared that I thought you might appreciate, to learn a little about the experiences of people who live with sensory processing challenges (Mind over manner - sensory processing https://youtu.be/cuyfob8SyCM).
Welcome to Hero
We are delighted to introduce our new communication and reporting system, called Linc-Ed Hero. Hero enables teachers, students, and families to view and share content anytime, anywhere on any device. The software is secure, easy to use and will bring all school-related information together in one place.
We are excited about the features that Hero has to offer families, such as:
view information on your child’s progress and goals
read school notices sent to the class or groups your child is part of
respond to school notices such as surveys and trip permission requests
view school term dates
view a school calendar of events
notify the school if your child is absent or late
navigate to other school-related webpages
customise your account by adding a profile image
select how you wish to receive notification
You may have noticed a few emails from us using Hero - however you may not have been able to see the whole message without first logging in. First up - we need all of our parents and caregivers to sign up to Hero.
Over the upcoming year, staff will learn to make full use of all of the features available on Hero. As we master each aspect, we will make it available to you. We are looking forward to sharing this with you to include you in your child’s learning journey.
We plan to share curriculum progress information with you in real time by July 2023. Once our community is set up on Hero - we will remove the school app, as it will no longer be needed.
Instructions: How to set yourself up on Hero
Take care everyone and enjoy your week.
Ngā mihi nui
