Bourchier Mail
School Newsletter - 2nd Edition - 16th February 2023
from the principal
Dear Families,
It's hard to believe we're already three weeks into the school year! While there have been a few challenges to start the year, I am pleased it has been a relatively calm and settled beginning. We have been working hard in each classroom to build the foundations for positive, learning-focused classrooms. In setting up our classroom environments, we have talked a lot about two fundamental rights that every student has in school: the right to feel safe and the right to learn as much as possible. These rights underpin everything we need to do at school, and we've been working really hard to make sure that every student feels comfortable and supported in our classrooms. We've been practicing routines and talking a lot about how we can all work together to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. Let's keep this going throughout the year!
This year Bourchier Street has more specialist subject offerings than ever. We have been excited to ‘launch’ into our newest specialist subject- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Brendan Fraser has had student building and launching rockets, which the kids have really enjoyed. We're hoping this new addition to our curriculum will inspire students to explore, experiment, and learn in new ways. It's a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop new skills and interests.
While it has been a calm start it has not taken long for the place to get very busy! This week we were lucky enough to have the Richmond Tigers come and speak with our Year Four students. It was a great chance for our kids to learn from some talented athletes and to hear stories of hard work and perseverance. Hopefully, this visit will motivate our students to set high goals and work towards achieving them.
We have had lots of swimming lessons happening at local pools including Aquamoves, Mooroopna and Tatura. The swim safety program is a vital part of our curriculum and we appreciate all the support many parents have shown by attending swimming lessons and helping out!
We also have exciting overnight learning experiences on the calendar. Year Three, Four, and Five students all have important camps coming up. These are great opportunities for our students to develop new skills, build relationships, and have fun. There are lots more things happening this term so please check your emails and compass for more information about all upcoming events.
I'm pleased to announce that Denise Howley will be returning to the school on a part-time basis to offer important mentoring and classroom support in our junior school area. We're thrilled to have her expertise and support in our school community. If you see Denise around be sure to say hi!
And, as always, I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed speaking with families so far this year. I love hearing about the things that are happening at home and in the community. If you ever have any questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to reach out to our staff. We're all here to make sure that your child has the best possible experience at school.
Recently new staff members had a day out of the classroom as a part of the school's induction process and some of our new teachers shared quotes about education they liked and I thought I would finish by sharing one of them with everyone…
"Education doesn't make us smarter. It makes us whole."
How good is it when we have new staff who are so passionate about making a difference and providing the best possible learning experience for our students. This makes me excited about the future of the school!
Thanks for your ongoing support, and let's make this a great year!

Hugo Ralphsmith and Tylar Young from the Richmond Tigers visited our Year 4's on Wednesday for an insight into footy life! Students were very excited, especially the Tiger fans!!
Bourchier Swim Program
This week our wonderful Grade 3s had swimming lessons at Aquamoves. Everyone was so excited to have the opportunity to learn a very important life skill of how to be safe around water from the very friendly and amazing swimming instructors. We are very appreciative of this wonderful opportunity. Teaching water safety skills to our Bourchier Street students is an essential and integrated part of every swimming lesson at Aquamoves.
The Resilience Project
We are very excited to be working with The Resilience Project in 2023 as part of our mental health and wellbeing program. We will have Martin Heppell presenting to all of our students and staff from the 27th to 29th March. We strongly encourage parents and carers to attend the free community presentation on March 29th from 6.30pm.
When building positive mental health in schools, we know the best impact happens when we work together.
The ‘Discovering Resilience’ presentation helps do just that by sharing the same evidence-based strategies being taught in the classroom, so they can be also practised at home and beyond. Attendees will also be reminded of the importance of their own wellbeing - we bring the best versions of ourselves to our family and community, when we make time to look after ourselves.
Please see the flyer to book your free tickets. We can’t wait to see you there!
