Swing Into The School Year Event: Tuesday, September 19th @ 6pm
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
Our first official full week is in the books! As I walked around the building the other day, I thought about the first few weeks of school. I thought about a school year in terms of a flight. Take off and landings are the most crucial. The first few weeks are our take off. So many systems to put in place, protocols to enact, routines to establish, adjustments to many conditions, and most of all SAFETY CHECKS! In no time, we will be mid-flight, but the take off is so exciting!
So, it has been a topic of conversation for a long time, but CONSTRUCTION FOR THE PLAYGROUND WILL BEGIN THIS WEEK! On Monday evening, contractors will put up the temporary fence in the large school yard. Exit 5 will remain open, through a fenced off egress. Students will still enter through there in the mornings. For our afternoon dismissal, our grade 4 and 5 students will exit through there as well, but families will have to stage on 68th Rd. We will direct our grade 4 and 5 walkers to exit first, to eliminate any back up. GRADE 4 AND 5 FAMILIES, PLEASE WAIT FOR YOUR STUDENT BETWEEEN THE LARGE AND SMALL SCHOOL YARD ENTRANCE. Phase 1 of the construction includes the large playground and the Fresh Pond Road side. When both are complete and ready to be used, then Phase 2 begins, which is the small school yard. How long will this take? I can only say that in the many meetings we have had with the architects, contractors, plan managers and School Construction, there was a completion date of this December. But we will see!
Tuesday night is the PTA's first event! I am so excited about welcoming our families into the buidling. Please come, meet the other families, bring the kiddos, see where they spend their day, and hear some great music! This year we want to connect our families and our community. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Lots of giveaways, resources, raffles and FUN! Come at 5pm for some Coffee and Conversation with me.
Grade 3, 4 and 5 students have received their NYS ELA and Math scores. They can be seen in the NYCSA. Below I shared the information. All families must have access to their childs account. It has all the information you need and should have. If you do not have access, please reach out to Ms. Ivett. (Iperezlopez@schools.nyc.gov)
Lastly, congratulations to Superintendent Teresa Caccavale! It is official, she is our District 24 Superintendent. We are so happy to continue this work with Ms. Caccavale.
Have a wonderful week! Remember, no school next Monday in celebration of Yom Kippur.

Ms. Mackiewicz and Ms. Montalbano and their Second Graders: International Dot Day
Our newest team had a great week with our scholars. This STEM activity was a hit with everyone. Class 2-212 celebrated International Dot Day, by working in pairs to create structures from dot candy and popsicle sticks. Collaboration, critical thinking, and delicious!
You may be thinking, "What is international dot day?"
What is International Dot Day?
What is the purpose of International Dot Day? International Dot Day is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression.

NYS ELA and Math Scores
Dear Families:
The results of the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tests for students in grades 3–8 administered this past spring are now available. These tests are designed to provide a snapshot of how your child is performing against New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and expectations for their grade level. It is important to remember that these tests are just one of several measures we use to assess student progress: grades, report cards, writing samples, projects, assignments, and other performance-based student work are equally important.
You can access the results through the NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) portal on the “My Student” page (schools.nyc.gov/NYCSA). Your account must be linked to your child in order to view this information. If you need support accessing the portal or would like to create an account, you can visit schools.nyc.gov/NYCSA to learn more or contact our school’s parent coordinator Ms. Ivett Perez-Lopez @ iperezlopez@schools.nyc.gov. We will be glad to help you.
Our staff is in the process of reviewing the results to help inform our planning throughout this school year. We will share more details on what this means for our school community later this fall.
If you need any support accessing your child’s scores, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Linda O'Shaughnessy

Upcoming Afterschool Programs
Mr. Alboum's Clubs
Our music department has created established afterschool opportunities, and is initiating some new ones this year! Mr. Dumont is even bringing back his morning Pokemon club. Interest slips will be distributed this week, but here is some information.
Chorus: Grades 3, 4 and 5. Last year our chorus performed and WOW!!!
Marimba Club: We have an extensive range of instruments, including the marimba. I am adding a video below of what that looks like. Grades 3, 4 and 5
Recorder Club: The classic instrument. Grades 3, 4, 5
Classic Music Memory Club:Music Memory Club teaches critical listening skills through learning about classical music pieces. The program uses drama, dance and visual listening maps to help students learn how to identify each piece of music. The program ends in May with a citywide competition between schools -- identifying composers and the names of the pieces by listening to excerpts of each piece.
Mr. Dumont's Clubs
Band is back! Mr. Dumont is also bringing back Pokemon. This morning club for Grade 2-5 harvests the passion and fun of Pokemon! Interest forms will be distributed this week.
We Are A Move To Improve School
Our PE teachers, Mr. Tripotseris and Ms. Corniel are not the only staff who incorporate movement. Brain breaks are necessary for everyone!
How Does Move-to-Improve Work?
Elementary school teachers use Move-to-Improve to add physical activity into their classroom lessons. During a math lesson, students might do an aerobic activity to compare two numbers. During an English Language Arts lesson, they might practice yoga movements to identify certain words. Any kindergarten–grade five student can participate in Move-to-Improve activities, no matter what their physical ability.
The Move-to-Improve activities build on what students learn in physical education and in their other subjects.
From Our PTA
Hi! If you're a new parent to PS88Q, welcome to our wonderful school! If you're returning, welcome back...we've missed you! We are the Parent Teacher Association (aka the PTA) of PS88Q.
So, what is the PTA, you ask?
It's a group of parents/guardians and other members of our school community who volunteer their time to plan events and find ways to strengthen our school and support our students, families, and teachers.
But we need your help!
Every parent/guardian is automatically a voting member of the PTA and it's important to attend meetings so you can learn more about your school, and have fun while you're at it! There are so many ways to get involved, which is why we created this survey.
Please fill it out...it only takes a couple of minutes! We would love to hear from you, and we need your voices!
Looking forward to meeting you and working together!
Your PTA Executive Board,
Samantha Desz (President), Camila (Secretary), and Sabita Krishnan (Treasurer)
(You'll be added to the PTA mailing list and you'll receive the monthly PTA Parent-to-Parent Newsletter and information on upcoming volunteer opportunities.)

3K and PreK Afterschool
GRYC, our wonderful community based afterschool program provides aftercare for students in kindergarten to grade 5. We understand that our 3K and PreK families perhaps are in need of aftercare as well. A local community based organization has been working on providing aftercare for our families, @ PS 88Q. Please see below:
Dear PS 88 Families,
This fall, Supermoon Art Space (a local art center and early childhood program) is organizing an after school for 3-6 year olds, on site in our school. The program will run Mon-Fri, from 2:30-5:30pm, and incorporate artmaking and creative play designed specifically for our younger students. It is a fee-based program that costs $500/month, or eligible families can pay with ACS or HRA childcare vouchers. We are aiming to start this program in October.
In the meantime, if your family is interested in signing up, please fill out this form so that Supermoon staff can follow up with you to answer any questions and start the enrollment process.
Looking forward to a new school year!
Team Supermoon
