Principal's Message 4.7.22
We are looking forward to connecting with you at parent-teacher conferences tomorrow and Friday. We always look forward to opportunities to strengthen our relationships with families. We are so proud of your generous and hard-working children and we are eager to celebrate their growth with you.
This week, some students from grades 1-5 had the opportunity to work together with our kitchen staff, Mr. Castro (the head of food services for LOSD), and me to learn about food preparation and nutrition through a hands-on cooking experience. We had a blast making pizzas, learning about healthy eating, and seeing the kitchen!
Additionally, I encourage you to read about some of our impressive student leaders in tomorrow's edition of the LO Review. Fifth grader Neil Mudanai, along with several of his classmates, organized a fundraiser for displaced Ukrainian families.
During conferences, I am sure you will hear about your children's academic growth, and I hope that you'll also be able to make time to talk about their social-emotional growth, their interests and passions, and their contributions to our community of learners. Experiences like those described above combined with the routine learning led by our dedicated teachers help us achieve LOSD's vision. "We inspire students to be critical thinkers who are empowered to contribute positively in a complex world."
Be well,
Principal Jennie Knapp
OSAS Schedule and Reminders
What students need to be prepared for state testing:
- Be well rested (good night sleep)
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Bring a book to read when they are finished
- Encouragement (think growth-mindset!)
A reminder - students do not need a smartphone or smartwatch at school. We have a land line phone in the office where we encourage students to memorize an important phone number to practice dialing. Additionally, each Lake Grove student has been issued an iPad or a Chromebook. Please be sure that they bring CHARGED chromebooks for testing.
If a student has a smartphone or watch during testing it will invalidate their test (smart phones and watches are an impropriety, per state assessment regulations).
April 11 is the beginning of the Statewide tests for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math for all students in grades 3-5. Here is the schedule for the next few weeks:
SEL Theme for April: Responsibility
“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”
~Mr. Fred Rogers
During the month of April, Lake Grove students will spend time exploring RESPONSIBILITY. As one of our three core values (safe, respectful, responsible), we teach and reinforce the skills and characteristics needed to show responsibility daily. This month we will deepen our understanding of responsibility through community discussions and classroom social-emotional lessons. Traditionally, responsibility is defined in a few ways: duty, accountability, and the independence to make decisions.
Here at Lake Grove, we will use the following definition: RESPONSIBILITY: to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world.
To live responsibly, we consider our decision making and how it impacts ourselves and others. We take ownership of our choices with integrity and we practice the important skills of self-reflection and self-control. This month we will practice these skills and learn from people who show a lot of responsibility in their lives. By demonstrating responsibility in our activities and interactions, we can contribute to a more kind and generous world!

COUGAR RUN CLUB GETS NEARLY 300 STUDENTS UP AND RUNNING!
Our launch of Run Club was a huge success! Last week, almost 300 runners signed up for Run Club and ran anywhere from 1/4 mile to 2 and 3/4 miles during lunch recess. Amazing! Thank you to all the parent volunteers who have signed up to support Run Club.
If your child is running on Thursdays, please remind them to wear appropriate running shoes, leave coats inside if the weather looks good, and perhaps eat a light lunch to avoid stomach cramps. We're so proud of all our young runners!

Safe Oregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
